I am addicted to frugality, and derive joy from savoring items, and avoiding unnecessary spending; its stems from liking to feel financially safer, and proving to oneself, that you can get by with little, while still maintaining a decent appearance.

I adopted this way of living in 1992 when I read The Tightwad Gazette. If you can’t afford the book I’m sure it’s in your local library. It’s in mine.

I think it's fun to want and grow towards new things, new experiences, etc. But that has to be heavily balanced with joy and gratitude for our current situation. New stuff will never fill an emotional hole.

I am grateful that when I am stressed or depressed, getting rid of stuff makes me happy.

As a furniture-free minimalist, I just love it when I feel the urge to buy something@ it's like why this item? What for? Can I use something else instead? It's such a fun jumble of thoughts and i leave it be at least a week to mull over them! Usually, I find I don't need the thing and leave it be but when I do, there is a simple happy delayed gratification to getting it and knowing this will enrich my life tremendously! It's so so so much more fun than just mindlessly buying things! ❤

I think this is a really important video. My own definition of minimalism is that at its heart it is a journey from unconscious consumption to conscious simplicity and appreciation of our material possessions. Your example of the scarf made me think of items that I really value and use often. I have a nano puff jacket which I really appreciate. If I go cycling I take it as it really packs down well. If it's cold I wear it under another jacket. On planes and trains it's ideal when you leave the airport or the station. If it's cold when I get in the car I leave it on. It washes really well and dries very quickly using less energy. I think that when you develop a deep gratitude for a few simple items then you need to consume more abates. This video perfectly illustrates this principle and brings it to conscious recognition. I am grateful for the time you took to make and post this video and I wish you well.

Hello Peter, I watched a YT video in which the concept of “shopping your own closet” was explained. It really changed my outlook on buying clothing. I now happily open my closet and look for the clothes I already have. Thank you for your video!

I've lived very minimally since about 2009. Being single and living alone in a city without family through the pandemic really shifted a lot of my minimalist practices. I bought way too much stuff (was lucky enough to be working just as much as before and wasn't going out spending money). Several things were in support of a couple new hobbies I started and still love doing... but much of it was junk. I've been getting back to my minimalist roots and appreciate your calming videos to get me back into that mindset. I don't think I'll return to the spartan ways of keeping my house (I've leaned into being a homebody), but starting to pare things back to just the stuff I really want and actually use (and wear). So glad to have you back here on YT, Peter!

Oh it does last, depends what sort of personality you have , I still get excited when I pull out a item of clothing years old and it is just perfect on me, (this implies to most of my wardrobe) think it helps as being in Britain I have a winter & summer wardrobe

Ooh what an interesting idea for me to lean into.. appreciating what I already possess.. rather than looking to the next scarlet robe acquisition. Thanks!
