@@damndanielrealass8004 What are the problems in controls in your opinions? I have encountered none. Also hack and slash games are like Skyrim, and no way in hell they have more "diverse movesets" than The Witcher 3.

Drowners are based on real-world Slavic mytholgical creatures known as wodnik, vodník, vodyanoy etc. From the stories I've heard, they are sentient, wear old tattered clothes and usually a hat. They have either green skin or green hair, have finger membranes, but otherwise look like men. Sometimes they're evil, sometimes good, sometimes just neutral. Evil ones pull people into water and drown them, so that they can harvest their souls, neutral and good ones just collect souls of people who had drowned by other means. The souls are always stored in cups in their underwater homes.

I think I know where the origin of the myth about drowners being the corpses of drowned criminals. Think about it drowner’s are necrophages, meaning they eat dead tissue. And this is a medieval society, brutal punishments for criminals such as drowning are commonplace. It’s possible that when people punished their criminals by drowning, drowners would show up later to eat the corpses and cause trouble for villagers as a result. To a villager who doesn’t know better they might see the correlation and think it equals causation.

There were tons of legends about people who died suddenly or by unnatural deaths truing into demons after death.

These fuckers are fast and enemies do attack in groups in TW3, but nothing is more awesome than hearing the "Silver For Monsters" track start while dancing around a group of Drowners, chopping them to pieces or reducing them to cinders with Igni. I've never, ever used the lock-on mechanic for that very reason. I want to keep the entire group of enemies in my sight, not just focus on one while being ganked from behind and from the sides.

"Utopiec" ("drowner") is a mystical creature that lurks in marshes and bogs for victims to drawn. "Topielec" ("Drowned") is a drowned man, who came back to life (it's also a polish word for a person who died by drowning). "Wodnik" ("Water folk") is like a mix between a Japanese "Kappa" and a Celtic "Leprechaun". They're intelligent and can be mischievous, but generally keep to themselves.

I always believed that drowners were based on the creature "utopiec" or "topielec" - which are kind of like vodniks, but with some differences regarding character/behavior. Drowners in the original Polish version of Witcher 3 are called "Utopiec" as well. The term "drowner" literally translates to "utopic" in Polish which means to drown. That is where the word "utopiec" comes from, meaning "a drowned one". Utopiec/Topielec are spirits of human souls that died drowning and are looking to take more victims down with them, vodniks are almost like spirits of the water that want to capture and hold souls for their advantage. Vodniks are also usually pictured as frog-like, or wearing a coat and having a beard, wandering in populated areas near water. Utopiec/Topielec are naked, bloated from water creatures with human anatomy, never leaving the water or the shore. They are very similar, but I personally believe Sapkowski aimed to base drowners on an Utopiec/Topielec, especially because an utopiec is the Polish version of this awesome Slavic myth. Thank you for the awesome video, keep up the great work!
@Morbak5465 жыл бұрын
I think the "corrupted humans" theory isn't that easily excluded. Look at the undead child of Anna Strenger and the bloody baron. As it becomes a monster, it becomes weak to silver meaning that it appeared post conjunction. It does change appearance like the drowners would if they actualy are scoundrels bodies. The main difference is that the monster baby (don t know how to translate its name) is classified as a cursed being whereas the drowners are necrdophages. There is also the fact that some necrophages look undead (the ones in the fog) with their guts ripped open, but the drowners despite their ugliness seem to have a functionnal body. More questions and few answers! Great video
@Walsinats43 жыл бұрын
Drowners - Polish: Utopce - are actually a distinct slavic demons, although they were sometimes associated with wodnik. Much like a second type of water demons - topielec, which was sometimes associated with utopiec.

Well, there is a quest in the first Witcher which heavily implies that at least a specific Drowner was a man who drowned, and came back as a drowner. Also we meet Vodyanoy in the first Witcher game, and they are definitely separate from the Drowners.

It is explained that drowners and water hags coexist very very often in their nesting grounds. You even see such a water hag lair during a quest in skellige. Drowners are nekrophages, meaning they are a humanoid-like race like ghuls and waterhags, meaning they are no cursed creature and dont connect to something like a botchling who is created due to a curse. Even if both feed on human flesh and share some similarities in behavour, they are clearly categorized differently. That leads me to conclude: drowners are the male counterpart to waterhags. After the conjunction of spheres, peasants and humans needed an explanation for how these vile creatures can be so similar to them. They couldnt accept that these were simply beast-like humanoids. They had to be corrupted corpses in their opinion. Almost like the humans couldnt accept that vampires aren't monsterous, turned an cursed humans. As regis states in the books: humans cant accept the thought of vampires being superior in self regeneration, the lack of a need for a brain, organs or lungs to live and their expanded life spans, they called higher vampires monsters, turned humans. Humans in this world cant wrap their had around the idea of a creature similar to humans which appears so monsterous.

I always thought that they were that amphibian creature that geralt finds when investigating the dead pearl divers, the story with the mermaid in either sword of destiny or the last wish. The Duke even calls them drowners. Though they have metal spears and armor and have an underwater city.
