i never believed Yen when she said it wasn't really him, i think that was mostly her trying to convince herself and i don't think she did, a lot of the stuff the sorcerer's do involves them lying to themselves. as for the question, is Necromancy evil? no not by itself, like most things it's how you use it that makes it evil or in Yens case misguided, if she knew more about Necromancy she could have only summoned his ghost without the need to rebind it to the battered and broken body, but sadly that knowledge is forbidden so she wouldnt know that.
@no_i_dont_want_no_slugs4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think she was convincing herself. People who say she was lying to Geralt don't see the nuance of her character. She's very much an "I'll do what I have to do to protect my loved ones" person, even if it means she has to do horrible things, even if it means she'll be hated. I think she's trying to push down her own empathy for him because for her the goal is saving Ciri and nothing, not even morality, will stand in the way of that.

I guess in the specific case of Yennefer and Geralt reanimating that dude for a moment, you'd have to ask yourself are you willing to torture information out of someone who is alive? Would you be willing to torture someone who is alive until they die to gain information? If so then necromancy is a tool that you'll be willing to use.
@Recoil18086 жыл бұрын
That to me depends on what that information IS. Acceptable reasons: Known plot the person is involved in. Let's say that we have a member of a terrorist organization captured, and we know that their group is planning something. In that scenario, lives other than the scum being interrogated are in danger and time is most certainly of the essence. Would you rather ask nicely and hope they tell you, or use every tool at your disposal to save innocent lives (IRL)? Now, let's say a group of assassins just made an attempt on your king. Bold, yes, but dishonourable scum undeserving of mercy or pity. Would you wait for another strike, possibly one more subtle, and hope that leads to a capture, or would you raise up one of the slain to tell you his master (Fic.)? Looking for someone that they have encountered, like in the example in the game, or in a similar example in... Shit, I genuinely can't remember the name of the series.... OK, I'll just describe it. Or looking for someone who you know intends harm on another. Obviously torture IRL here wouldn't apply, though Witcher necromancy does.. Troop movements that, again, could potentially save your OWN troops, or even civilians. Again, unacceptable with the living, but the dead are fair game, IMO. I genuinely do feel this to be more nuanced than a one-to-one comparison. You may notice that in all of the cases where I think it would be acceptable is when lives are genuinely at stake besides those of the resurectee or torturee. I don't have to like the act, but I will go to bat for its necessity in certain circumstances.. And this coming from a proud supporter of necromancy in other media, like in TES.

I can see a way of Necromancy being legal in a morally grey way. Just like with the study of anatomy, which in the past was considered evil and vile cause the practitioner is cutting up a dead body, laws can be put in place that the study and practice of Necromancy can only be done on the bodies of criminals or those who consented before death. Bodies of criminals who are executed will be donated to the sorcerers for the study of the art and maybe a tomb for soldiers who swore an oath of loyalty even in death that if the need is dire enough then they may be brought back to defend the city, these soldiers would sign contracts of course so it's not just their word but a legally binding document.

Depends mostly, while Necromancers raise corpses and bind spirits against their will, there are also the rare mages who use the same power to first request the spirits aid, or even ask if they are willing to be bound so they can either achieve goals they were unable in life, or simply to aid said mage in their endeavors. Skeletons of mighty long passed warriors given new armor and weapons while using their skill to the best of their ability in the name of their new master that provides them the link to the mortal world. We need more games who use Necromancy in that way.

In my culture necromancy is basically calling upon the demon equivalent of the dead person (every person has a companion demon that looks like them, and has almost all their characteristics in an evil version with the bad traits highlighted and good traits dilated, that demonic creature/qarin djinn looks like a scary looking version of the person who lives by their side 24/7 putting evil notions in their head and affecting them in different ways ) this demon soul twin knows everything about the person since they are with them from the time they are born to the day they die and know everything that goes on in their mind and soul, so how necromancy works is the witch/magician call upon this twin djinn and summon it into the decomposing body of the dead person to communicate with it and know all the information that the dead person knew since that twin djinn is the only one who knows everything the dead person knew, but the dead person's soul is not involved since it's dead and only God has the strength or authority to actually bring the real soul back into the body and in that case the body would be healed and fixed and brought back to life not decomposing or broken, necromancy is viewed as evil and devilish in my religion/culture

Morality is subjective. People will have different ideas as to what is and isn’t “evil” - it seems to me that necromancy is very much a bad idea, but I’m not sure that it’s inherently evil. Like others have said, the cost is high. I find it ironic that so many people condemn Yennefer for using necromancy as a last resort to find her adopted daughter, when Geralt is constantly butchering people and stealing and shit...I don’t see it as so black and white. Geralt and Yennefer are both imperfect neutral good characters. I mean, Triss didn’t help quite as much when it came to finding Ciri, did she?

morality isn't subjective theres obvious evil an good always at play even between the grey. what's dead has paid its price for the sins an deeds its life has done an deserves rest. theres absolutely no good forcing someone agienst their will to serve you or be bound to a decayed corpse for whatever purpose you have in mind. saying otherwise is like saying slavery is grey natured when all things should be free naturally.
@caroline.5675 жыл бұрын
@@willriseabove6858 I see slavery as morally wrong, but not everyone would say so - in fact, the Bible, of all things, repeatedly condones slavery - and many Christians believe that what is moral and amoral is dictated by God in the Bible (which I obviously disagree with). No one has been able to find a perfect definition or source of morality, unless there's a philosopher that I'm not aware of, whose definition of what is and isn't moral hasn't been found to be faulty. I think that stealing in dire situations is moral. I think that breaking other laws in certain situations can be moral. I think if you had an order of posthumous healer necromancers, you could make a good case for it not being evil. Geralt engages with wraiths and goes about the specific rituals of granting them peace all the time, which in a limited sense is at least engaging with necromancy. Granted, it's a naturally occurring form of it, and one that needs to be engaged with if it's causing harm to others, but there's no real reason mages can't work to alleviate suffering from the dead. Skjal might not be remanifesting as a wraith on his own, but I'm sure his spirit suffers in the afterlife, knowing it was shamed and cast out of the only community and family it ever knew, and probably experiences some amount of justified anger at having been cast out, despite the fact he did behave honorably. If you take that situation, then by using necromancy you can offer peace and catharsis to departed spirits. Particularly in the case of The Witcher, where the revived body is suffering physiological pain due to decomposition, you can just as well inject the entire body with opiate and euphorant-like substances that kick in once the central nervous system has been turned back on. That would eliminate the physical suffering aspect of reviving someone, by granting them the physical means to be experiencing pleasure and a relief from pain. Combine that with developing a larger practice, in which the necromancer brings emotional relief to the revived in the form of expressed love, appreciation, and gratitude from family and community, and you could well be working toward sending the spirit back into the afterlife with a feeling of fulfillment and closure. So, I think if you designed procedures around the cessation of suffering and the empowerment of closure, you could well make necromancy a humane and cathartic practice. Particularly in the case of trying to learn something from a spirit, if you're able to convey the goodness they are doing for your life and in the world after their death, while bringing something to offer them to take back, then the whole thing could be very reciprocal and rewarding. There will still be assholes who just want what they want and will inflict whatever pain they need to on others in order to get it, but then that becomes a question of when the applied use of necromancy is good vs when it is evil. Doing it this way could also be used to prevent the emergence of vengeful wraiths, pestas, and the like. If you can grant closure to a spirit before it remanifests, you'll have saved all the lives it would have taken in it's grief. Lastly, as for the resource cost, I don't see any reason why areas of powerful magic or with lots of magically potent life couldn't be cultivated, specifically for the reason of utilizing in this kind of practice. That way you aren't depleting sacred sites like Yen did. And as the craft is developed, I'm sure mages would find ways to reduce the raw resource requirements of the spells. Necromancy, as it is, is horribly unrefined.

This is a complicated question. Unless the mythos of a story clearly states that necromancy is forcing the soul of a person back into a dead body, it's nothing more than "reanimation." Reanimating a decaying corpse would be painful for the corpse. Imagine having your body in serious disrepair but you're alive and all "systems" are functioning. You'd be in serious pain. The corpse is not "alive" in its own right. Once the spell ends, it "dies" again. Clearly the act requires an abundance of "life energy" in the vicinity to make it work as you drain from one to give to another. Hence why Yen wanted to do it where she did...drawing on the life force of plants rather than another living creature/person. So, from a moral standpoint, it's not torturing a departed soul, and unless you use a living person as a source of energy to reanimate a corpse, you're not killing or harming one to aid another. I can see necromancy being banned or shunned because of the potential for dark acts and agendas by/of the wielder. As I followed the story, Yen did not make the choice to perform necromancy lightly. The urgency to find Ciri justified most any tactic used to find her. She knew it was risky but saw it as the only realistic option. A similar concept was done in Babylon 5 where Sheridan asks Lyta to do a "death bed scan," in spite of her protestations. Being in a "dying mind" at the moment of death changed the telepath doing the session and was to be avoided. Sheridan insisted because of the desperate need for what the person knew but couldn't tell them in his comatose state. As such, there may be an associated risk in necromancy...even when done with the best of intentions.

I usually think of necromancy as keeping people from the afterlife even if it isn't explicitly stated in a game/movie/book's lore. In Skyrim and D&D people like to say they're just animating a corpse with magic so they can play good/heroic necromancers. Just seems lame to me.

I think it's inherently evil, but necessary in times of need such as in the witcher 3

Golems exist, so there is no reason to believe that similar concept cannot be applied to necromancy. That leaves all negatives out (except one using the body)

Is there a spell to raise the dead in the witcher games, and by that I mean a spell we can use in combat

Considering what we know about the gods in this universe (Looking at you, Gaunter) and just how disgusting and horrible nature itself tends to be in this world, anything the gods despise and that nature abhors can't be that inherently awful. Rather it's just something the gods and nature don't want you messing with, because it affects them directly. I can think of an easy solution to the whole "corpse in unnatural agony" aspect, just refine the spell to remove nerve connections. There are mortal humans who can't feel pain as a result of faulty wiring, this can't be too hard to induce. Pretty sure most of the innately negative aspects is just the world trying to stop you from ruining their dominance. Since when have any of the gods cared in the slightest about mortal suffering, and in what instance has nature objected to the idea of a creature in pain? Botflies exist. Necromancy is nothing compared to that dread horror.

O common media i just want a undead army not a tourture party but what if the mages came up with a spell that dus not bring the soul back but just their memory's and skills and then the force moving the body is just your magick.

Necromancy or Church of Eternal Fire ? If I had to choose.....my zombie army once they figured out how to use a bridge would eat anything wearing a chinstrap. Yea Novigrad , we're coming.

Oh boy next witcher game gonna be lit. (maybe) No seriously with death everwhere a coven of mages could theoretically build an undead army and establish a small nation for magic users. That would make for an interesting moral dilemma befitting for the world of The Witcher. Mages who want to help people and are good in nature no longer being persecuted within but at the cost of the suffering of the dead whether they were evil in life or not. ... plus I really like the idea of a Lich as the potential main villain. Unkillable by regular means and extremely powerful. And on top of that with less emotions than even a witcher.
@essaly79696 жыл бұрын
1) As far as I know, there are no Lich in The Witcher universe. 2) Building and undead army would be extremely hard. Yennefer had to drain the energy of the entire sacred garden to reanimate a corpse temporarily and make him talk. 3) CD Projekt RED is currently working on Cyberpunk 2077, and isn't planning any Witcher 4 at this point in time.

Is it still evil if the dead deserve it? Criminals put to death for crimes no mortal punishment could equal. Setting criminal zombies loose on your enemy before the main army could save many lives.

Can you guys try making a kratos/god of war build for Skyrim, what with the release of the new game I think it’d be a good idea 👍🏻👍🏻
@kennymagwag14236 жыл бұрын
Ideas for the build being: •Hatred of all religion and gods •Will fight with the inperials and claim his status as a warrior (plus the stormcloaks are talks worshipers) •Nord/imperial •one handed specialist/dual wield •although being Dragonborn means he is under kynes ‘bidding’ he still likes the idea of having godlike powers I have no more ideas so far but I’ll think of more and comment on the next video, please consider I’m a big fan 👍🏻👍🏻

So amazing, in my opinion I don't think they're. Necromancy can be used in many ways and forms. Just depends on who has it xD

Alysha Khan There's not alot of variety in using Necromancy in the Witcher. It's not like Skyrim where you can raise the dead and they'll fight for you until they die again. The body can barely move and the soul can't cope with being reattached to the body, which causes immense pain for the victim of Necromancy. You can use it for the GREATER good. But it's still ultimately an evil side of magic that even the most powerful sorceresses don't like using.

Ghost Nappa Though Witcher 3 has way better graphics, voice acting, and stories, I still find more replay value and fun in Skyrim. You can make the Last Dragonborn be whoever you want, while Geralt will always be Geralt; he'll just be more of an asshole in some playthroughs than others.
