"Old Aldmeris" could very well not be an actual place at all. It might be, rather, a cultural remembrance of the fact that they as a people were not always what they are now. The former state of their race has been preserved in the cultural memory as a lost, distant place. Sort of a mythical way of remembering that they are degraded from what they once were, and that this ancient heritage is lost to them. The fact that they call this legendary homeland "Old Ehlnofey" would support this idea. I always thought that the homeland of the ehlnofey would logically have been in fairly close proximity to the Adamantine Tower. It makes sense to me that the Ehlnofey originated here, and gradually dispersed as they explored their new world and as ideological differences developed between them. This, of course, would imply that Tamriel actual IS Old Aldmeris, the ur homeland of the elves, and that the nedes are actually the descendents of the Ehlnofey that stayed relatively close to their point of origin. Which of course also means a significant amount Elfish ideology is based on a falsehood (big surprise that)
@mithrae4525
@mithrae4525 3 жыл бұрын
Fascinating idea. It'd also be consistent with the sea elves' exile location being near Tamriel, and with the Aldmer not knowing which direction to search for 'Aldmeris' (it's easier for storms to cause such total disorientation/loss of direction over a small distance than over longer distances). 200+ videos still to go in this playlist - hopefully FudgeMuppet explores that possibility in one of them!
@thalmoragent9344
@thalmoragent9344 3 жыл бұрын
Well no, because when the Direnni went to High Rock and the Snow Elves were vibing in Skyrim, along with the Dwemer and Chimer in Morrowind, Nedes were coming from the north, Atmora. Redguards hopped up in Hammerfell from Yokuda, and the Csaesi are from Akavir. Tamriel being the heart of Old Aldmeris makes sense, especially if it was a super continent before it was sundered by the Ehlnofey War. If they left from Adamantine Tower, it could be said they got caught in a storm as they perhaps split from there, and it may have messed up the ocean levels, forcing them to leave the now small island in the Illiac Bay. Would explain how Falmer and Dwemer were already on the mainland before the other Mer that left Summerset after leaving Tamriel for a short time before washing up on Summerset
@derskalde4973
@derskalde4973 Жыл бұрын
Similarly, if I understood you right, that could mean that the Altmer have it backwards. I already had this thought, after I heard something about the Ehlnofey wars. If I remember this right, there it said something along the lines of "then it split Old Aldmeris, and it became Yokuda in the West, Atmora in the north, Akavir in the east, ..." and which was the south, if it was Summerset or Pyandonea, or something else, I can't remember (and I'm sorry,if I got it wrong, this was just from memory). So if this would be true, it's possible, that the Bosmer are actually closest related to their Ehlnofey ancestors, that they stayed on what is now known as Tamriel, while a group of Aldmer left, got "stranded" on Summerset and changed to the Altmer. And then there's the Maormer, who claim to be the closest related to the Aldmer, which could have some cernel of truth, since they seem to have a more maluable Form, as, according to the Stories, the Ehlnofey split into the Old Ehlnofey, aka what would become the races of elves, and the Wandering Ehlnofey, aka what would become the races of man. If we spin the Story from their angle: a group of Aldmer was banished from Old Aldmeris and eventually settled in Pyandonea, barely changing due to having to be adaptable to survive there; Old Aldmeris was split into the continents we know today, a group of Aldmer fled from the crisis (Continental Split) and landed in Summerset, eventually changing into the Altmer; some Aldmer stayed on the continent, eventually changing due to Environment etc, becoming the Bosmer and Falmer (possibly Dwemer and Orcs). Or something like that. In that way, the Maormer would be closest to the Aldmer. Either way would mean, that the Altmer would be wrong in their believe, that they are the closest related to the Aldmer, and every other elven Race is descended from them. (It would be actually very funny, at least to me, if it'd turn out, that the Altmer are really the youngest offshoot of elves, making them the furthest removed from the Aldmer)

Aldmer is a play on the Gaelic world for Old or Elder... Auld. So Auld-mer, makes more sense for the Aldmer as they would be older. Altmer, would sound more like Ultmer. With the emphasis being on the "t" sound.

I’m convinced that ancient elves didn’t look like high elves. I think in their quest for perfection, they have mangled their form beyond recognition. I think the Bosmer, and to a much lesser extent, the Dunmer and even Khajiit are closer to the true original form of the Elves. I think elves were shorter and of a much frailer build than men. Topal looks more like a Breton than any Altmer. Notice Giants have some Elven features. So….this also implies that men and elves do indeed share an origin, as we are told in the lore. But my head canon is that the loss of Aldmeris is about the loss of the “before time”. Not a homeland in Tamriel or Nirn or even Mundas, but the time before creation itself. The sundering is the splitting of the races themselves, the chaos of reality that takes all that is whole and beautiful and splits it into “imperfect” smaller versions of the original. The fundamental differences between Mer and men, and even the origins of giants are all tied up into whatever the true cause of the creation of Mundas was…(on giants, I think their origins fall in camp of the earliest mortals not choosing a side in the debate on whether mortality was a blessing or a curse. They went silent and refused to argue the point and keep to themselves, probably much like the original mortal beings of Nirn. Frost Giants are unrelated and are the forefathers of trolls)

@Wirr Ling because in any fantasy setting humans always breed far faster than the elves. But, there hasn't been a Dragonbreak from those eras. The Dragonbreak and it's emerging timelines happen at the point of the Dragonbreak forward. Not backwards, so everything that happened before the Dragonbreak, is not affected by the Dragonbreak, only after the Dragonbreak happens everything forward is affected. Plus, there are many sources saying that back in the day, Goblins were the size of men, giving them the name of Orcs, then they shrunk.

This is so cool, it seems like it's inspired by a combination of Hanno's exploration of the Atlantic African coast and the Greek explorer Pytheas who went north to Scotland and perhaps farther... Fighting furry humans they called Gorilla, pytheas encountering a sea made of "jelly" (probably icy slosh), seeing mountains with fire that touched the sky (probable active volcano), and even the weird cartographic mistakes like assuming Scotland ran east to west. It also reminds me of those stories of St Brendan exploring the North Atlantic and encountering fascinating places and creatures. I love those early exploring stories, and they did a great job with this one.

I would wager that they obviously weren't the Orsimer as we know them, but rather goblins or a similar species. Perhaps these creatures were referred to as Orcs by the Aldmer, or perhaps that was one of many names given to them. Being that the Orsimer, along with trolls and goblins are referred to as being goblin-kin, and thus believed to be extremely similar in terms of appearance and culture; perhaps there is some truth to my theory.

(perhaps they were unable to flee 'the doom of old aldmeris') ...the orcs topel saw where a mere mistranslation (someone made a biased transcribtion of incomplete journals that were written by someone discribing something they saw for the first time) But that is just how I explain inconsistenties away, that may simply be caused by the sheer size of elderscrolls lore (its hard to keep all of it in mind when expanding on it)

In all honesty, the Khajeeti creation myth does not necessarily have to contradict Topal the Pilot's journey. All one needs to do is operate under the assumption that Old Ehlnofey was in fact Tamriel, and that at some point after the Orcs and Chimer had already come into existence and made their departure, the main group of Aldmer on the continent underwent some sort of major crisis which resulted in voyage en masse away from the continent. At least one of these ships would then have made it to the Summerset Isles, and in the following generations, due to the fact that they had to rebuild their civilization from essentially nothing, these few survivors forgot much of their history, and thus the identity of their home. Given that Topal the Pilot's journal is very fragmentary, there's even a chance that he actually met with Chimer as he was sailing around what would eventually be Morrowind, though if he did not, this could be explained by the fact that said land is quite vast. Perhaps the Chimer would only actually expand to every region of Resdayn over time, and they did not initially colonize the outlying islands included in its present domain. Edit: This would also mean that the Wood Elves already existed at this time, but considering Valenwood lies to the west of Elsweyr, and Topal's journey did not necessarily lead him to sail all along the coast, it is entirely possible that he simply missed Wood Elf lands. This is not to say that the present divide between Elsweyr and Valenwood has always existed, but merely that they might have already separated into East and West populations.

I think the bird folk may have been some species of harpy, though why they are so far from a desert is beyond me, most harpies tend to be desert dwelling but the area they were in at the time was a lush jungle, so tropical harpies maybe.

The possible error here is assuming that the waystones only point in a direction. It is equally likely that they point towards a fixed point on Nirn (like the North Pole or Mecca). Therefore the three different stone would have to be followed so that triangulation can be used after the fact to determine the locations of each destination.

On the topic of Orcs the elves used to call goblins Orcs as a slang term that is most likely what they meant by Orcs at this time the race of Orcs did not exist and as we know the name orc isn't what the race is actually named anyway it is a word obviously loosely throwing around mundis

Hmmm. Are the maps in error or are the Sommmerset isles on the move? Perhaps the Thalmor are playing the long game and are preparing for when the isles join with the rest of Tamriel. If the slammed into Valenwood we could have some problems if the Valenwood forests spread to Sommerset. Or the Bosmer May take the event as an attack and fight to protect the forest.

If we were to compare these writings to first-hand historical writings of our world, “they made him their lords and gave him their islands” could easily be a conquerers self-serving euphemism for “we conquered than and took their land”. Consider the history of the now extinct Aruwak people and how Columbus’ men wrote about them as a reflection on what the fate of these now extinct bird-people might have been.

Given the way they wrote the lore for elderscrolls and the general philosophy of obfusication, i'd argue that this is likely the most accurate depiction of what Tamriel was like pre-elves, Obviously the Khajiit's history is either not what they think it is (possible given how similar it is to the elves as far as creation myths and gods) or something occured in their history that made them forget their earlier history. The bird people had to of had something to do with all of the bird symbology adopted by occupants of the area. The Argonians fit nicely. He had no reason to make it up as this new land is fantastical, we've all walked through it, we know, but the fact that it matches up so well with what is there now, despite various mythology to the contrary, tells me that it would have to be accurate, either that or a series of very lucky guesses with imagination. This should be the basis on which all other myth and lore is balanced to get closer to the actual truth they had in mind when writing it. Amazing writing on their part though.

That’s hard to answer since there’s little to no instances of deities dying. Some daedric princes have died but since they’re daedra they are immortal and reform themselves. There’s no instances of Aedra dying to go off of so you can’t discuss that. Lorkhan was the only known divine being to have been killed physically but his spiritual essence remained. He had been physically killed by Trinimac but his soul persisted in his heart which was unkillable

Your assumption about not needing multiple way stones is potentially incorrect. For instance a compass can always tell you which way is north, but it cannot tell you how far north or south you are. If you goal is to go to the magnetic north pole then a compass can do that for you, but if you goal is to go to a specific location other than the north pole then the compass can only help so much. You need to be able to determine how far north or south you are. Latitude and longitude. My interpretation of this lore is that the way-stones show you to the way to a specific point, like a compass, but instead of always pointing north it always points at whatever location the creators decided they wanted the stone to take you. So for instance they may have picked a point on the map (not knowing what was there) and then using magic to enchant the stones to always direct you to that point. This of course poses a problem for the return trip, you would need a second way stone that always point home. But really, navigation is not as easy as "I have an item that always points a specific direction, that means I know where I am" you need the compass, a clock, and angles of the sun/moon/stars etc to get a fix on your location (unless of course "magic" or "GPS Satellites")
