i think x100's and x-pros are one of those "if you get it you get it" scenario. Personally I like the experience of just going out and shoot with the OVF then see the pictures later when I'm done. Maybe it's for the fake film experience, or maybe people genuinely prefer it this way, I certainly do. There is something about not getting the perfect picture with perfect framing, and then being surprised how they turn out, or have hundreds of useless pictures because you accidentally changed the setting. All that said, I like the xe too, in fact I got one. But having to pick one camera I'd pick the ones with OVF any day.

Excellent review. You have a new subscriber! I've been at this business of image making since 1979, where my first 35mm was a Ricoh 35G. I'm very fond of the rangefinder form-factor. I found Fujifilm in 2014 after over 30 years of Nikon, with some Pentax and Canon, and fell in love with the X100. So in 2022, after owning and using all five versions of the X-100, I've ordered an X-E4 and this nifty 27mm 2.8 WR. I'm thinking it'll feel familiar, and I get to use my other favorite Fujinons...namely the 16mm 1.4 (which is fixed more or less on my X-T2) and my new Tokina 33mm 1.4. If all goes as planned, this X-E4 and 27mm WR will give me back my beloved X-100, and still enjoy the X-T and X-E series. Cheers, and thanks

X100t is my favorite camera in years and I’m glad there are companies out there who still cater to different demographics. Having a ICL body is great and all but sometimes you just want one body, one lens and go out to shoot. Some of the greatest photographers in history pretty much went off with one body and one focal length. If you’re looking for a good budget camera I’d suggest a used x100f. The shooting experience is unique enough that even when you get a full ICL system started you’ll revisit it time to time.

Three years ago I picked up a used XE-2, popped a manual olympus lens + an adapter on it just so I could shoot. I quickly replaced that setup with the 18-55? Then I bought the 7Artisans 25mm and that served me well for some time. Finally, I think, I bought a 18mm Fujinon and that fine lens has stayed with me to this day. I've used Fuji since 2013, the X10, X-S1, X30 and all were good solid cameras and I enjoyed using them. I think if I ever need another camera I might go with the X-PRO2 or possibly one of the X-100 series.

For straight out of camera jpeg shooters the X-E4 is a no-brainier, it is much improved over my X-E3. In addition, the flip screen has enabled me to take shots that I could not capture with a fixed screen. As usual, focus peaking is spot on, enabling me to get razor sharp shot with manual lenses. Great build quality and of course the X-E4 offers the exact same image and beautiful rendition of the X100V as they share the same X-Trans IV sensor/processor, anybody saying they are somehow different is just being silly! If you want rangefinder styling and want to change lens then the X100V is not for you. At that price point the 27mm and X-E4 is a bargain, you are getting the same sensor and performance as the X100V, X-Pro3 and X-T4 and you choose the lens to put on it.

I’ve been so drawn to these cameras lately and watching so many review videos, trying to figure out if this is something that would be worth the cost for me. I’d been feeling a bit silly for wanting it, since I have another mirrorless that I like and I could edit the photos to have a more filmic look. But you managed to really capture that piece of why I think I’m seeking something different, and that is the inspiration piece. I’m inspired by these images I’m seeing and I want to try and see what I could do with it. Not having to edit them to get the film look just means more time to, I don’t know, make a scrapbook with the prints which is something I really love doing and a way I enjoy the photos I take. Thank you for putting it into perspective! Definitely hoping to buy used, and I’m still looking at some older Fujifilm models, but you made me feel justified in why I’m doing this search in the first place.

However, it doesn’t have leaf shutter and built in ND filter. So it’s a toss up for me. Points for XE4: smaller, interchangeable lens, possible OIS with lens. Points for X100V: leaf shutter, ND filter, view Finder (which I don’t use). “Better” lens than the 27mm if you want that form factor. It’s still a difficult decision for me. But on the other hand, I can just keep the X100F, and buy the XE4 for about the same price.

I am an XE4 owner. The X100V has been made by the American social media into an emotive camera. It plays on your emotions by tugging at your desire to appear hip, trendy, and and skillful in an old school fashion, projecting yourself as an experienced “player”. Hence, such an emotive camera would be a perfect choice if the user’s favourite focal length is 27mm APSC, doesnt intend to buy any additional lenses and was already a highly skilled and experienced photography enthusiast looking now looking for a casually fun camera that complements his/her image. Its the same as an F1 driver buying the current Mazda Miata MX5 as a weekend fun car to be driven around for fun and to show off. The XE4 is not an emotive camera but much more practical as it allows enthusiast to continue improving via exploring and enjoying different focal lengths. Although the X100V is an excellent camera. This is totallu useless as its price has been prostituted to a ridiculous level long ago and even more ridiculous today….when it doesnt even have IBIS and a top-spec EVF at such a ludicruously high price.
@Fuzzbrause4 жыл бұрын
I think the new X-E4 along with the 27mm is rather an alternative to the GRIII than the x100v ... often the GRIII is compared to the X100V and the form factor makes the grIII more prone to streetphotography than the x100v ... now Fuji has a camera that is competetive to grIII ...

I got a X-E2 years ago when Fuji were still making them in Japan and the build quality rivals the X-Pro line. The X-E3 I picked up last summer was so disappointing though. Even the dials were made from some cheap plastic and felt like they could break over time with a lot of use. Any thoughts on the build quality of the XE-4? I’m worried the cheap price may equal cheap build quality too.

the XS10 feels cheaper but "feels" cheap is difficult to understand as new plastics get lighter they feel cheaper but they're actually stronger. if you try a new Canon R5 or A7siii you'd think it was made out of fisher price plastic! the X-E4 is a little brick. its not heavy but it's solid.
@macallanvintage2 жыл бұрын
The XE4 looks light-weight but feels like a hefty brick when fitted with an equally well built 35mm f2 lens👍 Its definitely not a flimsy, lightweight, plasticky camera (unlike the Canon M50 which I also considered before buying XE4).

All the negative comments with regards to the X-E4. I wanted a small form factor pocketable camera for hiking and mountain biking rather than packing the X-T3. I picked the X-E4 I really like it. This also coming from an ex X-100f owner. I would say do not hate it until you have had one in your hand.

Just here for a bit of confirmation bias :3 I took delivery of a well used X-E4 today. Came with a Viltrox 56/1.4, 23/2, and 35/1.4. 1400 CAD. Total system. I'm actually over the moon. I am all Sony for Video, but never bonded with the E system (crop or FF) for photography. Fuji has something very intangible but satisfying in the still department. Just feels good, man. Fills the gap. I'll never own a Leica, but I feel like I am a little closer to the experience, by way of Japan. The streets are beckoning.

OMG this is such a nice camera!!! If I ever have enough money in the future, I would totally rock this as a travel cam/bcam!!! I agree that the camera experience is so much better with a camera! Ive only shot with the XT3 once but it was AMAZING! Photography is so fun and I can’t walk to do more! Especially with my best friend!!! The video features are also nuts on this tiny thing, especially compared to something like the XT30! 2 days on Moment to Canada!?!? WOW!!! Awesome video as always Patrick!!! 😁

I think you are 100% correct about xe4 vs x100v if you either have other Fuji x mount cameras or if this is your 1 camera but I think in my case the x100v makes more sense. 1) I have a stupid amount of gear acquisition syndrome and this great little camera doesn’t tempt me for new glass and 2) for everything that I’d want a bigger more versatile lens, I have my Canon EOS RP. However I think if you don’t have that same gear syndrome the XE4 does make more sense with that pancake

Great video! First I watched of the fresh crop of embargoed Fuji product news. As an owner of an X-Pro 2 and a 35/1.4 and 23/1.4, I am conflicted! I want something smaller and the XE4/27mm combo and X100V both have different merits that make for a difficult decision? I assume the XE4’s mechanical shutter tops out at 1/4000s? The X100V at least has the ND for bright day, wide open shooting.
@impatrickt4 жыл бұрын
Thanks James! I've used the internal ND probably twice on the X100 series - I don't think its needed on the photo side, I shot all of the samples in this video wide open without a hitch - it's something I wish they had for video models though for sure. If you have an X-Pro 2 I'd just grab the new mark II pancake and save yourself the dough! No need for a new camera!
@siggi4ever5554 жыл бұрын
@@impatrickt But ... but ... getting a new thing! New! Well, okay, that’s the most sensible answer and the one I’ll probably follow. I’m thinking I may opt for the 16/2.8 instead as it won’t split my other primes. Have you shot with it? Everything I’ve read is good and buying it will probably be cheaper than getting my very broken 16/1.4 fixed.

Good review I think the reason for same sensor is that they don’t make apsc sensors. They buy them from Sony And I think it is simply more practical rather then having Sony make other sensors The pancake is an f2.8. Is a f4.2 in full frame terms So not a fast lens I would put my Viltrox 23mm f1.4. Yes larger but much faster and less grain in low light
@impatrickt4 жыл бұрын
They have other sensors. They use bayer sensors in their cheap models. I used that 2.8 at night it’s perfect.

Good info, but as someone who's owned an X100f and XE3 at the same time, I have to disagree that the XE is better; especially for someone who already has an interchangeable body. Leaf shutter is much quieter, and yes the pancake is small - buts its a f 2.8. If you want that 35mm equivalent, and f2.0 - X100 series delivers that - with a quieter shutter, OVF, and built in ND.
@impatrickt3 жыл бұрын

Hey Patrick, I have an XE2. From what I've seen and heard, the ergonomics and function buttons and controls are a lot better ton the XE2 (and XE3) than the XE4. I don't know if you have ever used an XE2/3, if so do you feel the more advanced sensor/processor and the tilt screen are worth upgrading for in spite of the ergonomics (the hand grip spoils the sleek looks and pocketability)?

Would anyone know how the depth of field and bokeh of the X-E4 + 27mm F2.8 pancake compares to a M43 Lumix + Lumix 20mm F1.7 pancake? Larger sensor but higher F-stop would suggest similar outcome?
@impatrickt3 жыл бұрын
you'll get more bokeh on the fuji - the tighter focal length plus sensor size. I had that 20mm f1.7 it was like shooting with a phone unless you were a foot from your subject.
