This was IMMENSELY helpful. I'm not on Ableton (FL Studio user over here) so I had to approximate most of the actual processing and go by ear at places, but I gotta say: 20 minutes of this got me to where I wanted my sound to go (darker, harsher, harder) and gave me a foundation upon which to keep building. I especially loved the impact + kick pairing - something that I never would've thought about in a million years that almost instantly transformed the whole foundation. "Thank you" doesn't even begin to cover it, but it's a start, so: thank you!

One of my fav videos from you till now!! Amazing to see the smooth workflow and clear explantions why you do the processing and the video has a nice length to watch it all the way. I am wondering though, I often don't see you match the volume after distortion or compression to how it was before this. Is this something you don't mind?
@audioreakt
@audioreakt Жыл бұрын
thanks yeah I try to make it not too long, it's always a bit tricky to balance but I am happy with the flow of the video too on that one. No I usually don't, as most of the time it's for sound design purpose and not mixing/mastering. Usually when I add a new device and see the input is too high, yes in that case I will either reduce the output of the previous device or adjust the input of the device I just added. A lot of time your input level will make the device react differently, so I never change it first, I always see how it sounds first without adjusting and then if there is something off or a problem I will adjust the input. Gain compoensation can be great to see if what you've done really improve the sounds or if you are just fooled by loudness. I will do it more on the mixing stage or if my goal is too make the sound better/clearer, but if my goal is to tweak to death until I find a a tone I like then I don't care about gain staging, I pnly care about the the tone. Hope it make sense
@Flamieee1
@Flamieee1 Жыл бұрын
@@audioreakt I understand, makes sense. Thing is not to be fooled by loudness indeed or of it's clipping or something. Great thing about techno you can get away with stuff like this because it's all about distortion and tweaking it till it sound nasty (your words haha) by the way really great that you added the arrangment part, that's what im struggling with to get an general arrangment that you can go further. Thanks again for this!
@Flamieee1
@Flamieee1 Жыл бұрын
By the way, was always struggling to get that nice percusive rumble that gives a track so much energy. Now with this video finally it is so simple. I'm actually recreating the whole video right now in ableton and the results amaze me! again thank you so much, going to check out your website to see how i can support you because this is style is up my alley and was struggling a bit to get this sound
@Flamieee1

as I am working thru this process I did notice some phasing issues with the high frequency percussive channels. I actually had to remove the Haas effect because it didn't come thru when I set it to mono on the master for example.

Insane kick 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻 hey Paul i have a question btw - I’ve seen some other tutorials in which people say kicks should be as short as possible so that the woofers in the club can move properly. What’s your take on that? Does that apply to sub heavy style like this? Would it work if there was a constant kick/rumble at around 50 hz in the low end? Should there be some pause and how long?
@audioreakt
@audioreakt Жыл бұрын
it's true but it's also depend what are the effect or groove you want...for me there is no one way or right or wrong way..if you look at tech house genre, you wiill have this short kick and almost plucky bass somtime and for sure it let the sub works well as it can move properly, but sometime you want something more linear or continuous like rumbles...the best things to do is to reference to track you like or track that have sound that you want to acheive similar effect, this way you can see how you have to do...but it's true that if you have a very long kick tail + bassline it might sound like your subwoofer doesn't breath, but at some point it might be what you want. Another exemple would be with 808 kick opposed to 909 kick, one might tell you 909 are better because they got more punch compare to 808 that are more boomy kick. But somelse can tell you they preffere 808 kick because it got that nice deepness and roundess that it'a hard to get with an 909 kick which is too punchy/dry...

great you are videos! you could make a video where you show how to mix this track, explain if there are frequency problems etc.. some complete things if you do gain staging, when you put an eq / compressor why its useful. because I see that in the insert tracks you clip in the red is that a problem? like that could help several beatmakers because on YT there aren't really any videos where they properly explain their process. it would be nice of your part and a good continuation!
@audioreakt
@audioreakt Жыл бұрын
the things with mixing is that each case is differnt so if I told you one thing for a track it can be wrong/completely different for the next track... I am also a big beleiver that 80% of your mix is done with sound selection and having each elelement with the right level, which both cannot be teach and come only with experience... I know it's not the answer you wanted but I am not gonna lie to you and telling you that " YoU NeEd tO kNOw That SeCrEt MixIng TipS aLl ThE Pro Use ThaT WiLl ChAnGe Your Life"... the best thing you can do is download the template, take a screen shot of the template level of each track, then reset all the level to 0 and try to mix and see where you did wrong, basically kind of reverse mixing...

I will answer what I answer to someone else : The way I like to do it it's I will do exactly like in the video but with the REC on. I will play around with the scene and maybe automation to have a rough arrangement recorded in the arrangement view, then I will edit and polish the recorded arrangement in the arrangement view. You can also select all you clip hold control and drag and drop in the arrangement view, but this a bit more tricky as you have to make sure all clip per scene have the same length otherwise you will get something weird into the arrangement view. But could make a video actually maybe

Hi there, I'm completely new to this and it's my first tutorial trying to make something. But I'm stuck at 3:04. I created a new midi track and dragged in distorted tail but after that non of the functions you are showing are no available to me. What am I doing wrong? I don't have an option to group with drum rack.
@audioreakt
@audioreakt Жыл бұрын
first I create a new midi track, then I drag and drop the sample for my library straight into the midi track,this is going to create a Simpler device with your sample inside, then I right click on the Simpler device and group into a drum rack

Great tutorial! I just wish you skipped less because it's sometimes hard to follow. Like at 1:33 I have no idea where you got those tune/attack/delay/level controls from? Is it a plugin? I clicked on every button on the drum rack and can't find them

it's ableton 909 core kit, its a default drum rack coming with live. Indeed the one with macro is with live11 but you should have a 909 core kit drum rack with live 10 thats sound similar

@Audioreakt at around 5:50, I don't understand how your individual channels are super loud playing at 0db but your master isn't in the red? I'm doing everything the same as you but my master channel peaks at 8.49db (kick peaks at -0.3db, impact at 8db!)

So I downloaded the project template, some stuff is missing for me but I saw you have a limiter on your master channel which explains it. Do you use it for ear safety and always put one then remove it at the end before mastering?
@audioreakt
@audioreakt 5 ай бұрын
yeah it's mainly for ear safety, once the track is finish it can happen the limiter is squashing everything (my mix basically), so I will redo the mix, I will first select all track, then bring the kick to -6 or -9 until the limiter on the master don't work anymore...because all track are selected, it will bring down all the other track too. Most of the time its fuck up my mix but not too much, usually it works for me, I just need to readjust the volume of few track...I don't recommend to do this method to be honest but that's how I do.... I always forgot to bring the kick a -6 when starting a track therefore at the end of the track I usually need to redo my mix...but it's not a problem for me...

I did almost the same stuff that he did in kick top loop part since i'm stil learning and experimenting but when i add the audio track with audio from KICK group somehow it makes an echo unlike in his track which sounds really broken. But it works when i add only the Main kick from the KICK group without the audio with the delay effect. Would you guys have an idea about the problem i'm having?

use a LPF on your sample, bring down the cutoff and apply an enveloppe on that filter to mopen the filter fast. enveloppe with no attack and no sustain, then play with the decay/release and enveloppe amount of modulation on the filter

I hope you can answer this for me. You seem to have very high levels on all your tracks. Is this because you're mixing straight into your mastering chain? If I'm mixing for a pre master I am watching all channels constantly to make sure my track comes in no louder than -6db. If I try to have so many angry elements (for examples all your percussive elements and hats) then I find I'm swamping the track levels wise. Are you able to explain this please?
@audioreakt
@audioreakt Жыл бұрын
tbh I have a bad habit not putting my kick at -6db when I start a track, this would leave me headroom, but what I will usually do is that when the track is done if it's everything squashed I will redo the mix, starting by bringing the kick at -6, then mixing element one after the other. Your pre master doesn't need to be at -6, it just better to avoid having peak above 0. Because if you peaks at -1 for exemple on your premaster, the mastering ingineer can just do a -5 gain on your track to get headroom and get to that -6db (btw that -6db it's more a security thing told my engineer than a real thing). the most important is to not have peaks above zero to preserve transient and avoid clipping. Otherwise people will send pre master with everything already squash and the mastering engineer cannot do anything to your track as it's all squashed and pushed to the limit).

Can you show how to move the music from session into arrangement view?
@audioreakt
@audioreakt Жыл бұрын
The way I like to do it it's I will do exactly like in the video but with the REC on.
