Roy is a class act. As a Red Wings fan I hated him---but only because he was so good and such a competitor. Tough as nails too. In hindsight, without greats like Roy the games would not have been epic. Nothing but respect for both.

Im a huge Avs fan, always will be, and I absolutely hated the Wings so damn much, but MAN were they an amazing team! Couldn't help but respect them and knew we were in for a rough night at the office every time we had to play them... Those two teams playing one another was must-watch TV: just two ridiculously stacked rosters with an insane amount of hall-of-fame talent. Miss those days. Could almost shed a tear thinking about it.

Just look at the players on the Wings and Avs between '96 and '02. Over 20 Hall of Famers and go past those guys. There were a lot of really good solid hockey players on both squads. It was more than the fights. It was true hatred, but true greatness. It was Passion and skill. It was anger and greatness. I can go on. But everything about it was great. Listening to all these players talk about it, is amazing. Anyone who didn't see the Alumni game about five years ago should go and watch it. The full game is on youtube. They said all the players on both sides had gone out to dinner the night before that game and had a great time talking about the rivalry. I would've loved to hear and see that.
@scottdecker911511 ай бұрын
I agree. You know it seemed like every year from 96'-02' the two teams knew in the backside of their minds: "You want to win the Cup you have to go through each other. It's inevitable." You know, there are many rivalries in the NHL, but I don't think any of them will ever compare or really be defined as well as Detroit & Colorado. It's a shame they play in different conferences and don't play each other as much. I would love to see them renew the rivalry again.

Osgood deserves to be in the HOF one day... 90's was a great time for goaltending and there was a lot of stellar goaltenders that got outshined by monster goaltenders of those days like ROY, Brodeur and hasek... Cujo also deserves to be in the HOF!

Roy and Osgood, regardless of all bias were great for their teams in lie of all the other BS. I loved the goalie rivalry more than the rest. The fact that they acknowledge the insanity of where it all went... speaks volumes to their overall characters.

Nice to see there's no animosity all these years later. In the intense heat of competition at the highest level, it's understandable you'd "hate" the other guy, but when it's all said and done, that rivalry could be boiled down to one word: respect.

As a lifelong Avs fan, we hated the Wings. But with the passage of time, nothing but respect remains. The golden years of hockey and, for me, the best rivalry in the NHL. The talent on both teams were second to none. Avs: Sakic, Forsberg, Roy, Deadmarsh, Lemeiux, Keene, Ricci, Bourque, Kemensky, Foote, etc. Wings: Yzerman, Chelios, Fedorov, Kozlov, Larionov, Fetisov, Draper, Konstantinov, McCarty, Lidstrom, etc. Even better now that Sakic leads the Avs, and Stevie Y leads the Wings. How cool is that?
@matthewburkhart528 Жыл бұрын
@prochrgedLT1 As a lifelong wingnut I concur, I knew every year it was a battle in the west between them and us. I met Aves fans and we still talk shit,not as heated as before. The talks are more of when hockey used to be hockey,the games changed and I no longer really watch anymore.

Wings fan. This rivalry made my childhood that much better! I couldn't stand Roy because he was just so good but I like many other Wings fans at the time HATED Lemieux. After all these years though I realize why he did it- he was dirty but he was an enforcer, Draper was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. One hit spurred on the best hockey we'll probably ever see! Go Wings!

I miss those days. Seems like the Wings turned back into the “Dead Wings” for 20 years. I understand it’s a rebuilding process, but damn it takes along time. Going on 15 years for the Pistons too. To see teams under .500 come back year after year and have turn around seasons, kinda hurts. Why not us? Wings are such a young team, but looks like they are coming around nicely. Hopefully, Hockey town returns sooner than later. As for the Pistons, it’s gonna be a miserable season. Tom Gores sucks.
