You can do even better on the Joyo stuff, because they OEM a lot of it. I have several Kmise/Saphue pedals that are Joyo circuit boards, in really basic housings, for ~$20. Most share names, but one in particular does not. The Joyo Crunch, is a MI Crunchbox clone, but the Saphue/Kmise Crunch, is a Joyo Pocket Metal; which best I can tell is a somewhat original circuit.

I love your descriptions of the differences in the sounds of each pedal ( in every show, not just here), but sometimes it is hard to define the subtleties. Have you ever tried putting the signal through a graphic tone analyser, ‘70’s hifi sets loved them, then you could immediately see differences in the levels of different frequencies? Or maybe that is just for tech nerd and a bad idea......

The reversed diode showed up around 2010 (was correct in 2009 and earlier) for the Joyo and to my knowledge never got fixed. The mistake leads to asymmetrical clipping and an understandably different sound. There's also something off spec about the tone control components that makes it awfully muddy with the tone knob anywhere below noon. The original purports to run safely run up to 18v for extra headroom and clarity, and I've seen modders say the Joyo is close enough to do the same.

my joyo handles 18v fine. I like the asym cliipping. It's a bit more dynamic. My Joyo has the HP/LP labeling backward. Easy to tell if you keep the drive low.

It'll still have assymetrical clipping if that diode is there regardless of the orientation. Reversing it just makes it more drastic.

I have the OCD v2 and the Kmise UD (52 Tele, Strat w/p90 and Bugera V22), i have both on my board currently. The ocd is set D@12 and T@1-2 for a med gain overdrive. The Kmise is set G@1-2 and T@1-2 for a high gain distortion. The OCD is of course great but for me once the drive is too high, its too bassy and also dark, so its great for fattening up and getting a low gain tone. The Kmise however has way more drive on tap (almost fuzz) and the tone is in the right place for clarity. The HP/LP switch is upside down on it and SEEMS to run fine on 18v also but (unlike the ocd being much nicer @18v) i cant hear much difference @9v if there is any. Great pedal actually! Hope that helps some :)

Pretty sure Joyo makes 3 out of the 4 pedals here, which explains why you have 4 clones that don't sound like the original. The circuits are all pretty close, but those 3 have the same divergences that take them away from the OCD.

For me, this pedal is an example of how subjective guitar tone can be. I've never been able to get good results from it. Yet with somebody else's rig it sounds amazing. For me the Klon-types work better.

Hey I know this isn't exactly on topic, but Ryan have you ever thought of doing an abuse test on pedals? What made me think of it is I very recently upended almost an entire can of beer off the edge of my coffee table which somehow perfectly landed upside down on top of my electro-harmonics hot wax pedal, and balanced there leaned against my table leg, and wasn't noticed until the next day when I picked up the pedal beer literally poured out the input jack, put it in a big bag of rice for 24 hours plug it in was working but making weird noises put it back in the rice for another 24 hours or so, that's with the back off and rice stuffed all into the thing, and finally when I shook all the rice out which took a minute had to knock it around a little bit to get the wet swollen up stuff out, now the pedal works great no problems whatsoever except for the green light on the crayon side doesn't turn on but the side still works, the whole pedal works just fine other than the one indicator light not working. Makes me wonder if other brands could take the same abuse and I'd love to see something like that if you ever felt like doing it.

The first batches of the Joyo had a clipping diode inverted so the sound can’t be the same as the OCD, you’ve got to desoldering it a solder it again in the right position, or buy a new corrected one. Also the Joyo is based on the OCD v1.4.

I believe it's based more on a mish-mash of early versions. It has a 500k vol pot like v1.2, but a 10k tone pot like v1.3. And I don't know if those pots are linear or log, which are also part of the evolution of Mike's OCD. Dude, it is so hard to tell. In this video, with this guitar into those amps and those mics... the OCD definitely sounds better, like objectively better. There is way more edge to it, and way more cut, meaning your guitar can be quieter in the mix, but still be heard better. Very midrange honky. The Joyo sounds very flat, static. Like the sound is stationary, there are no dynamics in the distortion - string/pickup harmonics that change over time just don't translate to changes in the character of the distortion. The Joyo distortion just sounds like static, like actual static, lol. But... I don't know, this could just be his rig (git/amp/mics). I know my Cuvave doesn't sound like his Cuvave. So it leaves me scratching my head - if I got an OCD, would it have the same character on my rig as it does on his? I'm doubting it. And FWIW, the Joyo Ultimate Drive is my first OD in line, and I use it all the time.

Not quite a 'budget' pedal, but my go-to overdrive is the EHX Glove overdrive. Which, according to Joshua Heath Scott, is an OCD copy. I never tried an OCD, but EHX's version is a phenomenal overdrive.

The Joyo is likely based on OCD v1.1, so if you're comparing it to a v1.4 to v2.0 OCD, you'll notice differences in the tone. My Joyo is asymmetric because they install one of the diodes backwards (they did this for a long time but maybe they've corrected that issue). I like it, and use my Joyo on my gig rig. It's a bit more dynamic. Also, on my Joyo the HP/LP labeling is backwards. If yours is like mine, you ended up comparing the HP against the LP... My Kmise sounds nearly identical to my Joyo, but symmetrical clipping. These are the most OCD-like of all the clones I've tried (probably all of them except newbies like the Horse). I have a v1.2 OCD and it sounds better than them all, so it's my 'studio OCD'. Lastly, the Joyo and Kmise can both be run at 18volts just fine.

The Joyo also has a buffer transistor on the input but it's not in the bypass scheme and if you try and remove it so it's more like a OCD V1.1 it squeals... I suspect Joyo's circuit layout is problematic..

Weeell, few things to be said: these kind of pedals, do not get on with other pedals, and therefore they create interferences to each others, however, the Joyo it's an outstanding pedal, with a great circuit considering the cost, after all, most of these elements for pedals, are made almost entirely in China. Difficult, but not impossible, to do single video with a single pedal, then putting them together, one after another, and only then it's possible to hear the differences

Dude, i was wanting to hear the comparison of the joyo and the fulltone after you hooked the joyo up to the 18v apapter. you broke my heart. broke into a million pieces. i havent felt pain like this since my dog ran away with my girl. We all know if you hook up more pwoer we are taking our own risks. thats on who ever does it. for experiments sake (and maybe forcingother omapnies to push lines) i think it has to be done. But i've been running my pedals on 12 volts for years now with no problems. most things have regulators in them these days but thats beside the point. put out the warning and do the experiment. I was like, "Finally!!!" i ran my pedals on 12 volts out of necessity. I have the right adapters now, but still sometimes use the 12. One pedal i wanted to run by you that you may not even know about. Rowin makes it and Donner and another company make the same exact pedal under their OEM. Called the "tube drive". i bought a donner tube drive because i found one on ebay once for 18 dollars and free shipping. I had 19 dollars and pulled the trigger. Absolutely loved the pedal. though donner doesnt make them anymore, i think Rowin still does. You can find the donner still on ebay between 35 and 300 dollars. You gotta love the crazy price guys. Like those dudes who sell the behringer pedals on ebay for boss prices. you wont find a cheap behringer on ebay. I do have thins feeling that behringer pedals wont be around much longer. Most have been discontinued and sweetwater has like 8 kinds now. I bought the last Vtone GDI 21 ever. coincidentally for 18 dollars and free shipping. Ive been pretty lucky like that. Anyway, they advertise the tube drive as a tube screamer which is also a chorus effect. These tech guys have traced the circuit and say it is a copy of an OCD pedal. I love it because it does tube amp type breakup in clean settings and hos a growl if you turn up the gain. I wish I had just bought two of them instead of getting a timmy clone. But this may be a question you might be able to put to rest in the future. Since you have the pedals. Three companies make the exact same pedal, just different branding. You can probably find one for 20 bucks if you look. Either way, you should love the pedal. It has good reviews on amazon and ebay, but no videos out there at all about what kind of pedal it is or comparing it to others. If you jump on this, you can be the first. I sent a good wor to musiclily about you the other day. They responded. I told them you sold me on their fuzz pedal and i hate fuzz pedals. You sold me though.

I like pissing sitting down as well. It is also cleaner, you don't have urine splashing around. I also brush my teeth a lot of times while doing so. Time is valuable, best to double up when possible. Although I piss in the woods generally at least once a day as well.

If that’s a version 2 OCD then it’s not the same circuit as the Joyo Ultimate Drive. That’s an exact copy of an earlier OCD. Also the Joyo sounds a bit better with the gain lower and the volume higher. I have one on my board.

I’ve got a V1.1 OCD. I haven’t used it in 9 years since I went KPA, then Helix. I see some people are asking $1000 for these V1’s. Can this be true?

I hope Mike Fuller watched this 🤣. I don’t know the man. I have heard second and third hand that he’s not a very nice man. But hell, I like his pedals. The OCD is awesome and the Deja Vibe is a mainstay on my board.
