Bro you have to do the entire Mosky M series, they have a rat one, screamer one, klon one, they basically do the thing jhs did with the muffuletta and bonsai. Only they have like 10 pedals in this line that do the 5 versions of a popular pedal in one thing.

@@onerandombruh Nope, 308 is the Yngwie modded DOD 250. This pedal is a lot like the DemonFX YJM308 which I have and use. "308" is a Ferrari Yngwie likes, not a chip. Scuttlebutt (probably true) Yngwie got frustrated with DOD and Di Marzio, that's how Fender got the pedal (which is a lot brighter, more EVH sounding to me) and Seymour Duncan got the Fury pickup. On the Mosky pedal, the toggle switch MR is like MXR, 250 is like DOD 250, and 308 is like the old Yngwie signature DOD 308. I always have my DemonFX on the 308 setting, it's a lot like the DOD 250 reissue (the one with a real-live on-off LED).

I'm pretty sure the "Tone Bender" setting on the Big Fuzz is a 1977 Supa Tone Bender style mod on the Pi circuit rather than a classic two-transistor fuzz- it basically just takes out a pair of clipping diodes. It adds loads of bass and makes it really sweet. People like Dazatronyx do a Big Muff with a toggle switch that does the same. I've got one of those and a modded Big Muff Pi with a toggle and they sound the same. I'm pretty sure M takes out both sets of clipping diodes as my modded BMP sounds the same when I set it that way. Loads of volume and turns into a big fat distortion setting.

On the 741 Preamp pedal, I thought MR would mean MXR Dist + too, it being a close cousin to the DOD 250, both of which use the LM741 op-amp but now I'm thinking it's Mid Range. It's weird, kinda cool but would have to try it myself to see if I really liked it. As for the gain knob not completely killing the signal when turned all the way down, it's really simple to put a small resistor in series with the pot so it's never fully "off" and that will add a bit of extra gain at the top end too as seems the case here. Definitely unexpected though, it's like having a TS style overdrive with a switch labelled "SD" (the TS-808 and Boss SD-1 being "cousins" in the same way the DOD 250 and MXR Dist + are) and having it turn into an octave fuzz or something 😅 With regards the weird clipping options etc. I dunno whether maybe the setting are labelled wrong, I'm going to assume they're not for now. If that's the case, I have encountered that strange, fuzz like, gated clipping lying under your signal when experimenting with different clipping diodes when building my own pedals. I'd have to check my notes to remember exactly what I did but it was combining silicon and germanium or Schottky barrier diodes and placing them in the reverse order (so whether I had silicon or germanium/Schottky on the positive or negative side of the pair) created that and it went away when swapped back. It may be that with the silicon setting, they're using fairly low forward voltage diodes and are using multiple germanium/Schottky diodes (i.e. 4 diodes 2x2 in series run parallel to ground if that's not too confusing,) for that setting which will raise the forward voltage and therefore volume. The soft clipping option might use low forward voltage diodes too I guess but I wouldn't think it really shouldn't cut the level that much. The Boost setting is simply a "diode lift" removing any and all clipping diodes from the signal path so it's basically an MXR Micro Amp. Again, this one's weird 😂 As for the Fuzz, no notes. They nailed that one. On it's "Boost" setting Ryan, it will simply be lifting the clipping diodes from the muff circuit, basically making it a 4 transistor preamp/boost. I usually build my own pedals (I've got dozens now, serious issues with GAS lol) but at that price, it's really hard to find any reason not to grab myself one. Bonus gain staging idea: try running the 741 preamp first into the Fuzz and set both to their boost mode. That way you have the op-amp boost driving 4 transistor stages. Potentially could create a very nice overdrive sound (edited several times because I can't stop myself from commenting before I've finished watching and because I just can't stop myself when talking about gear. It's a problem but I'm sure I can find a sympathetic ear or two here 😆)

So the sound could be series diodes of different types used together , turning on ? Or just that they are there at all ?
@danmc_2783
@danmc_2783 9 ай бұрын
@@terryenglish7132 it came from using diodes of differing type in series with each other. So instead of 2 diodes parallel to ground I was running e.g 4 diodes, with 2 pairs of diodes in series that then run in parallel to ground. Placing a Schottky or Germanium diode at opposite ends of the series pair would cause that sound to come and go but don't remember whether the Schottky/Germanium was on the positive or negative end of the pair for that sound to occur

@@danmc_2783 Thanks for the info. From tests folks have done here on youtube , the double diode pair when the diodes are the same , sounds different from just 1 diode turning on. There's a quality diodes share when its 2 in series vs just 1. Here w the noise, Impedance mismatch might be a factor. Diode impedances vary by type
@danmc_2783
@danmc_2783 9 ай бұрын
@@terryenglish7132 I believe it's a mismatch between the pair in their forward voltage. I'm not sure whether it doesn't sum properly when there's such a large difference or if it's a difference in how the clipping occurs in each. It almost seemed like the change in which diode was closer to ground caused it to clip rapidly through one diode but then linger in the other. Like the flow of current hits a "blockage" and slows down at a certain point in the chain. I don't know if that's what's actually happening but that's how the effect sounded to me

I just got the Big Fuzz. Mostly because I needed a Big Muff Pi. It does that very well, even though it can get a little splatty. The Tone Bender is a more gated version. But between where you play on the neck, the gain and Voice switch you can get a lot of different tones. The voice switch seems to add mids, but it sounds very different in a dirty vs a clean amp. Though a dirty amp it really screams on leads. Would probably stack well into an overdrive. The M setting must be for Mosky. It’s like an original fuzz. Also very versatile. Turned out to be my favorite, unless I want a straight up Muff. The boost seems to be removing the clipping diodes. It can be dialed in to give a mid boost. The ability to switch out the clipping diodes indicates it’s probably an op amp circuit with hard clipping diodes. I’m going to take it apart when I get a chance. I really like it. Getting the Overdrive next.

It seems to me, they sent out mis-biased pedals at first by accident. Then “corrected” the circuit. If you are feeling adventurous a simple mod could bring it back. Like a single resistor type simplicity. You could even add a switch to go between the two. If you are willing to learn super basic pedal stuff….. could be a really fun first mod!

RYAN, The unfortunate problem with the CÜVAVÉ is that it is SO special, that not even other Cüvavés sound like it. What I don’t understand, is why some enterprising genius (hell- he or she doesn’t even have to be a genius; he or she could be a pretty mediocre intelligence) doesn’t just reproduce your special Cüvavé- the one that sounds amazing? the one that sounds like no other fuzz pedal on the planet?- component for component, and make a lot of money. In case I’m not being sufficiently obvious: that person should be you, Ryan. You should team up with somebody who does electronics and knows how to get these things mass produced, and you should clone the hell out of your unique fuzz. Then, finally, you will not be the only person on the planet with access to that sound. You can trade that exclusivity for thousands and thousands of dollars. I don’t own a Cüvavé, because it wouldn’t sound like your Cüvavé. However, if I could buy one that did, I would pay as much for one as I would a classic-style Big Muff or Fuzz Face. (That is to say somewhere between $70 and $110.) I don’t think I’m the only one.

Where germanium 1N60 germanium cost about $2 each. The silicon version are like a twentieth of a cent each. Also Maybe a little sinister too. There has been confusion for a long long time about them. There used to be 1N60 germaniums that were common and really nice germanium’s. Now they are pricey and out of production (germanium). It’s very weird that they started calling the new Schottky silicon diodes the same name. Only ever adding the P to the end of the silicon sometimes. Version 1N60p are silicon. They almost never get this right in order listings etc…. People squabble whether their new diodes are germanium or not hah. Nope not 200 for $5. Try $2 +each! Thats what I do if I think I made a mistake. I’m pretty dang OCD about my pedals. That’s really cool you are the builder behind those pedals! I want one! Cool to meet ya! I have some bad news though. You defiantly made fraudulent pedals right out in the open for for thousands of eyes to see…. So... It’s pretty awkward letting you know this publicly. You have some explaining to do now bud :( KIDDING!!😅 te he he I’ve never really seen fake 1N34a’s per say that be pointless. . Usually if you search for them, and the shop/internet doesn’t have (find) them, they will just redirect you to a Soviet equivalent. Like the D9E. (My fav over all) They cost a decent amount themselves. 1N34a’s are so common that it would more trouble then it’s worth to “fake” It’s mostly an issue in the audio world to mix those specific ones up I was talking about. If you google say “Buy 1N60 germanium” Almost everything you will see will be the silicon type and EXTREMELY cheap, usually plastic.too. It’s unintentionally and of course intentionally done all the time. Why they named them the same diode is beyond me. Maybe they were promoted as substitute for germs. I would only buy germanium 1N60’s in a specialty shop, like Pedal parts plus, Small bear etc. It seriously took me a couple years to confirm this, after reading audiophiles argue endlessly. Even really experienced people get it wrong. Once and for all. 1N60p are Shottky rectifier diodes and silicon BUT measure around the same as a germanium, and used in place of germanium because of this. These actually have a forward voltage very close to germanium. So they are passed off as such sometimes. It’s really weird. You can be reading the description and even then the post will contradict it self. It’s a cluster F?(k. I honestly think it’s just because people don’t know most of the time themselves. The first time I ever saw one, was way back. I bought a kit (I had no idea what I was doing) It involved opening up the EHX Soul Food and clipping the silicon 1N60p out. Then making a three way switch. One for the stock Schottky, one was Opamp only clipping and the provided germanium was a D9K. They are nearly identical in every way. Basically a Soviet 1n34a. EHX hid the diode so people that know what they are doing wouldn’t see them haha. Well that was figured out pretty quick. JHS did this mod as well. That kit is what got me started with pedals. Covid, plus my love for pedals and nerdiness is what led to me doing a mod, and gaining confidence. Then the obsession began. I ordered those 1N60p silicons and D9K (Soviet 1N34a’s) Anyways I’m blabbing. But it never hurts to hold a real “point to point germanium” under light and a magnifying glass. If the glass isn’t too dark, you can actually see the little thread of germanium spiralling through. Being made of glass is also one indicator it’s germanium. And price. So now I have been stuck with about a thousand 1N60p’s around from when I knew nothing. Somebody told me they were germanium. I was buying them to maybe do the KHS Jlon mod and sell them…. That never happened haha. Annnnyyywayyys. I’ve never come across a fake 1N34a. Just the Soviet D9K. But that is made known when buying. Faking a 1N34a would be weird and not worth it. I just had a pair of actual 1N60 diodes I used on a build and they are so nice. Wish they cost $9 dollars for a thousand like the silicon ;) Hope this makes some sense. Again I’m half asleep typing haha. To make things even more confusing I’ll just say that 1N60p’s can be used in certain circuits with no problem. The Soul food didn’t change drastically with the swapped germanium. Although it made it a little softer and open and just better feeling with the germs. I thought the silicon sounded a little raspy / and rough. It was a minimal mod, but I feel worth it. It turns your Soul Food into a Klon It’s like the finishing touches. Nobody could expect EHX to spend millions of dollars sourcing the exact same Germs for the price/consistency/ avaiblity when many people won’t every Hearn the difference. It was a simple board room decision. They probably designed around this difference with a capacitor etc to get the sound with silicon. So you get three switches. Stock/Opamp only (dirty boost) and finally the D9K’s which are identical to the 1N34’s Also a bass cut in the mod. You can add or cut bass as needed. Crank your amp? Turn it all the way down to keep clarity and prevent speaker “farting out” It’s really nice to hear it boosted at low volumes. It fills it out and sounds VERY Klon ish. Rarebird effects (Erik)

Anyway, when those pedals were fresh off the boat and into the music stores, you had to sort of step back when you opened their little wood box that they came in because the toxic smelling cloud could be pretty overpowering. So God knows what's in that paint. ...I suppose as long as you resist the urge to lick or ingest it, it should be pretty safe(ish)?

I agree, the LM741 doesnt sound or behave much like a 250/D+. Low gain is more compressed and high gain is more sustainy. The fizziness is also highly unusual and more characteristic of cascading op-amps. My uneducated guess is this is a 250 design with an added input op-amp stage for gain/buffering and an output op-amp buffer. Need to find a trace/teardown on this pedal. Not sure why the "MR" setting is so dark, that must be bypassing some input stage or modifying the feedback loop.

Ryan, I don't think it's fair (or even particularly appropriate) to compare $42 pedals to items costing much more. Better to (as you've done) show what all you're getting for your $42. Both of these pedals are GREAT! They're both unquestionably good buys and deserve a place on anyone's afford-a-board. I like the voice switch down. It sharpens the teeth! 😁 And I'm gonna suggest that the M stands for Metal. Thanks for doing it, buddy!
@shaft9000
@shaft9000 8 ай бұрын
Why isn't it fair to have a relative idea of what your $42 (that is no longer available once spent on this) is being put into vs acquiring the original? Put another way: If what you're really after IS that "Muff" fuzz and not just any fuzz, you'll want to know how close a clone is to what it's supposedly cloning. Whether the clone cost $20 or $200, the question is the same.

I bought the Cuvave (with the new circuit tweak that doesn't do velcro) & Rowin Frenzy (which also doesn't gate now) recently. Both sound very alike (with Rowin in the upper Push switch position) to me except Rowin is slightly more bassy, rugged and gainy. Cuvave is more synthy smooth. Let me know if your Frenzy does the velcro/gate thing.
