As the owner of a 65 year old Frogeye Sprite, which is a similar size, weight and power, I completely get the concept of light weight and simplicity. But I worry that I am in a very small minority. Car buyers now are obsessed with bigger and bigger wheels, more and more "tech" and larger and larger exterior size (ironically, with very poor internal packaging). I _really_ hope there are enough buyers for this because it deserves to succeed.

The good thing is that cars like these only need a minority of people to sppreciate them. I've recently watched a few engineering videos about how big wheels ruin comfort and efficiency - and I was surprised how many viewers agreed and some even pointed out how they had swapped the huge rims with thin tyres for smaller, lighter ones with tyres with genuine sidewalls and some air in them - on new cars and at their cost. So I hope we've arrived at "peak wheel" now and the pendulum is going to swing back somewhat.

I love compact roadsters like bmw z3, mg gtb, i love smartfones with little screens, but we do not really have a choice now)

You should Google the first gen Tesla Roadster from 2008. It had 393 km range and weighed 1,305 kg, roughly the same as a Mazda Miata.

This car perfectly sums up the folly of the 'big battery required' argument. A 31kwh battery that can take this car as far as a 50kwh battery would in an SUV. BMW could have made an original sized mini with an electric motor and it would have flown out of the showrooms as fast as it did back in the 60s.

I think what separates Jack from any other electric car channel presenter is that he is really quite knowledgeable about the history and car culture in general. A lot of new electric cars focus channels have a presenter that kinda live in their own bubble but Jack here could easily draw a comparison with Spyker or David Brown and it’s really quite endearing

Well, he kinda had to. Fully Charged hired him to replace Jonny Carpervert Smith, a former 5th Gear presenter who was the first "real" presenter this channel had. Bobby Llew had to finally admit he really didn't know enough about cars and was just trying to create content that filled a niche he was passionate about. Which is honestly what MOST EV channels are, just people who enjoy and are passionate about EVs sharing them with the world. The early reviews on this channel were always fun, but also tended to have factual errors or misunderstandings. So Jonny helped to correct that to a great degree, and brought an air of authority and professionalism not only to this channel, but the entire genre. So when he left to create his own channel, Fully Charged hired someone who could fill his shoes. And I think Jack does a pretty darn good job of that. I was skeptical at first, because he seemed to be very much a petrol head in the beginning... but he has grown into one of the most passionate EV presenters, who seems to really enjoy how quirky and fun EVs can be. He is far from alone, though. We now have a robust ecosystem of EV channels. If you can avoid the clickbait, the nonsense, and the cynical investment bros that is.

I was co-founder in an EV project, which had very similar characteristics originally, small sports car, L7, battery pack in centre tunnel. That project failed, but not because the idea would have been a bad one - I am happy that this is now coming out, as it is what I would like to have for summer fun car for small roads. I think the power must be maximum 15kW continuous and 50kW is only available as peak power, as that is the L7 category limitation (maximum net power of 15kW). That is not really a limitation for anything else than top speed. It will likely accelerate great due to peak power, but top speed is unlikely exceed 90-100km/h depending on drag coefficient. Not that I would want go to autobahn with this anyway. L7-B2 does not specify speed limit, most other L7 categories specify 90km/h, but physics will limit it anyway. Interestingly, it might be possible to fit the same car to small volume M1 category, and do away with the power limit. Likely production of that version would need to be limited to smaller number (both EU max and country maximums exist). So a "Limited edition" could offer much more power and other improvements, as long as the series is small. That is likely used by some very expensive sports car manufacturers already.

The design of this is pretty bad and probably too costly. You can easily work with a Chinese EV manufacturer to build one that much better and cheaper. A similar spec car in China is 3000 Eur.

@user-gs3tq6bx2u I was referring to the GM Wuling car sold in China, it is basic and still a best seller after 4 years. So it is a reliable car. China does make high end cars like Nio, Xpeng, HiPhi, LiMotor, Hong Chi ..... these cars are highly rated even in Europe. The Japanese made cheap underpowered junk in the 60s and Taiwan made no cars in the 80s, they were just assembling Japanese models. Taiwan does make some bikes.

That's a unique category of vehicle which doesn't require safety equipment. Golf carts fall under that category. But anything that advances the EV technology is good.

Although the price of most things are all relative these days and circa £50k for something this bespoke is probably about right, I reckon many car enthusiasts (me included) would be just as pleased to see manufacturers (*cough Mazda*) pushing out the EV successor to the MX-5. looks a little (just a little) bit like an old porsche 356, has the hp/kw in the same range. and sounds like a fun car to drive. same as the 356 is with 'no hp' (by todays standards) - still one of the most fun cars to take for a spin. i am glad that some ppl got the hang for it again and build little fun cars to drive! one of the last i drove was the miata (sure, also not electric) - but the right concept - small, lightweight, fairly low hp... but incredible fun to drive. seing some companies getting the concept now gives me hope!

Nice presentation. Totally agree about car size. For a lot of people now who live in densely populated cities, they don't need huge, heavy, long range vehicles. Car companies should be looking at producing smaller, simpler EVs. I keep watching these sites with presenters getting excited about speed and how far they can go on a single charge. This was very refreshing to watch. Although a few negatives for me (living in a climate where yesterday was 40 degrees Celsius) I would have to have Air cond. Long term warranty/repairs from a small company could be an issue. Insurance could be quite expensive.

It's pretty impressive that the Carice has just under double the battery of my 2015 Smart Fortwo ED, but triple the range! The Fortwo has 17.1Kwh and I can barely do 100km on it (hard to say for sure, I bought it just before winter, and the range obviously diminishes). I'm assuming the aerodynamics and the lower weight helps a lot, and the fact that this doesn't have "all the amenities" of even the Fortwo which has the ABS and traction control and air conditioning and airbags and a big radio and so on. I'm impressed, it looks like a gorgeous car I'll never be able to drive because they're not legal here in Canada.

No the Smart cars range isn't because of the aerodynamics, it's because the battery is rubbish. Equivalent Japanese and Chinese cars have greater range. That's largely because they were designed to be EVs from the ground up so don't have a bunch of wasted space that should be cabin space or battery space. Plus it's probably true the batteries available now, are better than those Mercedes put in the Smart ForTwo (but perhaps not by much).

I really hope "lowtech" electric cars become more common place. Today vehicles pack in so many features that end up overly complicating vehicles and/or only increase things that can fail. Also, by getting rid of features, you save power for what matter the most, the motor. One thing I've been wishing all major vehicles makers to start making is a base car with nothing fancy in the slightest.

That's a seriously nice looking car. That shot of the Caterham looks chunky and overaggressive by comparison. I really hope they do well with these. The one thing I'd like them to have which they don't is blended regen braking, so light braking uses regen and the disk brakes are only used when necessary --- it goes against their philosophy but it would also save a lot of energy, which of course lets you drive it for longer.

I live in the Amsterdam area, not far from where he filmed. Winter came late this year, and it took a storm for the leaves to fall, but before that it was already getting really cold. I commute on a bike, like most Amsterdammers, and my hands nearly froze without gloves. So dear Winnipegger, I know what he felt, and it was cold, but of course not comparable with your winters. We actually had those long very cold winters with big lakes frozen for months and waist high packs of snow when I was young, but we lost our open air ice skating culture a decade ago due to global warming. Writing this makes me nostalgic.

Wonderful review. Small lightweight cars have always been a favorite of mine.. it’s more fun going around a corner fast than accelerating in a straight line. That said, for I’m concerned that there doesn’t appear to be much in the way of safety. For instance, your head acts as the roll bar, there are no front or rear bumpers, and obviously no air bags. While it looks like a lot of fun it doesn’t appear very safe.

That looks like a great car! A bit like the original, tiny Porsche cars. I like the idea, a small, light and nimble car, that doesn't need too much horsepower to be great fun! The funnest motorbike I ever had is the one I've had for many years now, a pretty small 50 hp retro bike, with very nimble handling. Just lean in over the TT handlebars, gun the throttles wide open, and aim for the apex! And you might be doing this at a legal speed, but it still feels just great! This car looks like it's doing just the same thing, but on four wheels!

Can’t see it being licensed in the states. Safety regulations have to be met. Maybe they already have a plan for that. I drive a Triumph Spitfire and it’s a tin coffin, but also built before regulations were passed. I’m with them wanting to make a basic car and easy to repair but they have an uphill battle. Excellent review. 180 miles of range is all you need. The convertible looks beautiful and fun, but needs a removable hardtop for practicality. Maybe a 'double bubble' shape roof.

The fact is that this kind of EV has always been possible. You only have to looked at classic conversions to know that. And if such cars are mass produced the price will shrink to nothing in a couple of years. But this has always been the pattern of car production. Starts exclusive and expensive, then it becomes less exclusive and still expensive, then less exclusive and reachably expensive, then affordable and not exclusive, then quite affordable and accessible, then actually affordable and accessible, then suddenly cheap and saturates the market. Same with all technology. I have a 20 year-old 42" plasma TV. When I first saw plasma TVs for sale it cost £10,000 for a 28" screen. Mine cost £1200 when I bought it. It's still going strong and can display HD output that didn't even exist when it was made. But for £200 I can now get a lighter, higher quality, multi-talented, smart, 50" TV. From a £10,000 28" plasma TV to a £200 50" UHD LED TV in 25 years. Fifty times cheaper (way more if you allow for inflation) for tech that's a thousand times more advanced. The same is happening with EVs only the evolution is even faster. We've already reached the point where you cannot make an ICE car cheaper than an equivalent EV. And before anyone argues I'm talking about the cost to MAKE an EV. How much they sell it for is nothing to do with the actual cost. As Fully Charged has stated many times there is no need for electric cars to be as expensive as they are. This is going to be the self destruction of legacy motor industries because the EV giants are going to start churning out pocket money EVs while the likes of GM, Toyota and Ferrari are still trying to keep their oil industry buddies happy. The lesson for the anti-EV mob is simple: Stop telling EV advocates what EVs can't do. Because they're usually doing it within a year of being told it's not possible.

Keeping it simple and yet efficient is challenging but rewarding. The historic Citroen CV2 has lots of genius design which made it very popular and practical despite its simplicity. Electric cars too can be built in a much simpler manner.

You point out one of the best characteristics of any GREAT vehicle... The connection with what is actually happening between you and the road. I was a trucker for 19 years. The worst thing they did to the trucks is to take control away from the driver. The truck is not as good as a true professional driver at moving the truck around safely. It's good for the people around and for the cargo if a person is in control. The same can be said for your passengers. That car offers what is needed... Hardly anything other than transportation.

And the fact that it's electric, makes it even better And even though I really love EVs, and I really hope more of these come, I wish there was some sort of engine noise. Or, if the noise of the wind overpowers the electric drivetrain, then I wouldn't care

There is the most uplifting George Jetson kind of "whirr" when you hit the accelerator. It reminds me of the sound of a turbo charger spooling up. It's a great noise!
