The unit of functional neurosurgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square has been around for a few decades now, and uses a multidisciplinary approach to helping patients with movement disorders.
We know that movement disorders don't just affect people in terms of their movement, but can also affect people in terms of their speech and psychology. Therefore, the team of neurosurgeons, neurologists and specialist nurses who have dedicated their careers to optimising the medical and surgical care of patients with Parkinson's disease, Tremor and Dystonia, is complimented by speech and language therapists and psychologists, who form an integral part of the team.
As explained by Professor Zrinzo in this video, it is only by bringing the very best experts in all of these disciplines together that we can provide the excellence, in terms of a holistic approach, to not only the disorder but to the patient and their families too.
The expertise that has been honed and refined over decades is really invaluable when it comes to introducing a novel therapy to the UK such as MR Guided focused ultrasound. As explained by Professor Zrinzo, bringing all of these qualities and expertise together, in terms of improving accuracy and safety, the expertise of developing the neuroimaging to guide us to the right target first time, the approach to ensuring that we can deal with patients in the longer term as well as in the shorter term - This makes Queen Square a wonderful place for people who need advice about whether they should have medical treatment, surgical treatment or a combination of both.
