I agree with most of what Frank Zane stated in this interview. Certainly the part about being yourself. Body building can be very vain. Even to the point of absolute arrogance. Its refreshing to hear such honesty, in the midst of what was likely, a very chaotic time in body building history. As far as his comments about size. I agree that size isn't as important as overall symmetry, definition and posing. Every body builder brings something unique to the stage. Something they want the judges to see. Zane brought to the stage a body that wasn't big, but was symmetrical in its overall development as far as muscles were concerned. His techniques regarding posing were designed to purposely showcase that symmetry. The fluid movements from one pose to another, allowing judges and the audience to see for themselves, how equal his body was from one side to the other. Ego is very much a part of life. For the average body builder back in the 1970's and 1980's, one had to possess a fairly sizeable ego in order to compete with so many amazing body builders. Frank Zane, by all accounts, wasn't a big body builder, like Arnold for example. But what he lacked in size, he more then made up for with such a symmetrical beautiful muscular body. Certainly, for guys who are not that tall or large, he stands as a true testament to what a man with a smaller frame can do if they set their mind to it. JR💪

It's the judges that like the Mass Monsters like Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Phil Heath and Big Ramy. That's why they started the Classical Physique division at the Mr Olympia to satisfy fans like you and me that appreciate and like the Aesthetic Physique where the whole package is in perfect balance which is very hard to do. Zane had no weaknesses and his detail & conditioning was flawless. At 5ft 9in you can still run 5 miles every day if you want to and these mass monsters today couldn't sprint 50 yards to save their lives without collapsing and they can't even wipe their asses because their so muscle bound at 5ft 9in at 265lb at 3% bodyfat and at death's door on stage. They are dropping like flies from all the drugs they are doping.

@donquixote...5 жыл бұрын
@@jrewing5886 Sure, balanced... But so is the average guy having never touched a weight. He had a nice physique with some good qualities that one would want to emulate, and seemingly achievable for most people to strive for. And I was a fan as well, having watched the 78 & 79 shows at the time, and the only time it aired on tv. But the idea of perfection, no way... He said of Franco that he was a legend in his own mind, and that could also be said of himself. And I'd also put Dorian in that category of not being able to stop talking about himself. Record books...? Three MrOs, not nine.... Oh, and one more thing, those authorities you spoke of, they were the ones that told him he needed to put on more size. I guess not perfect enough...
@jrewing58865 жыл бұрын
@@donquixote... The average guy? Seriously...... Are we talking about the same guy? Frank Zane? Not sure what you're on about, but the man I know, body builder Frank Zane literally had perfect measurements for his weight class and yes, if you check the record books detailing body building and in particular, body builders of this time period, you'll see Zane in there. Again, being big was great, like Arnold. Who was in a different weight class vs Zane, but the key to Zane's success was symmetry. Both sides of his body were near perfect. Which would be strongly looked at by judges. Arnold had mass, weight, size.......but he too had very good symmetry and form. In a pose off, Zane and Arnold were quite literally at the top of their game. Average? I seriously doubt the "average" man has symmetry unless they lifted and focused intensely on it. Zane practiced what he preached and I might add, other body builders respected him enough to seek his advice regarding nutrition and supplements. 💪
@jrewing58865 жыл бұрын
I might also add. If you know anything about body building, then you ought to know, egos ran very high among body builders back then. They were a tight group and yea, they were very very competitive, but also good friends. Franco was a monster for his size and weight. The man was epic in terms of his physique, but it was his strength that was most impressive. Even Arnold has said, of his friend, he couldn't have done it without him. They were very close. Not sure about your comment regarding Franco, but he was a legend in many peoples minds.

He looked great, fairly wide shoulders & fit looking etc... but I remember thinking to myself “he’s very lean looking in his sweatsuit”... I didn’t wanna look like I was staring but let’s face it when you’re in the locker room with Mr. Olympia you want to get a look lol... To my surprise he took off his sweatsuit and changed into shorts and a muscle shirt... and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing... Details everywhere, his abs, intercostals and serratus, just the most perfect physique I have ever seen from every angle... I was stunned. thanks a lot, Frank Zane is too little interviewed and seen - you do an important job to highlight his career and draw from his knowledge.

Zane looks phenomenal in this thumbnail shot. Perhaps one of the better pics I've seen him in.

At one time Frank Zane wrote every dream down in a notebook he kept next to his bed. He thought it was a way of learning.

What he's describing psychologically what it feels like In 90's I was skinny natural bodybuilder in a semi professional bodybuilding gym I read as much as could about psychological approach from bodybuilders from the seventy's Every sunday i would look up gym and i would train legs on my own Had 800 kg on legs press, i visualise that i was going to move it very easily That I was going get 6 reps, i was so psych up Never felt like it was ever heavy because already done it in my head So i always thanks frank zane for his philosophy on his training
