Tie Dye Design: Incline Ice Dye and Incline Liquid Dyed Heart Tie Dye Shirt Comparison

In this tutorial video I show and explain the process that I used to make an inclined liquid dyed heart shirt and an inclined ice dyed heart shirt. I tied and dyed the two shirts at the same time and use the same dye colors on both of the shirts. At the end of the video, I compare the differences between the two shirts.

Wow, they are both very good. Personally I sort of lean towards the ice died look in this case even though I have strong OCD and enjoy the clean, crisp look of the liquid dye. Perhaps it's because of the chaotic and contrasting look that makes the ice dye appealing.

Both are pretty amazing. I prefer ice dye over liquid and no exception here but the liquid dye is really pretty. It has a softness to it that is really appealing. Gorgeous color combinations btw.

If you don't have sinew or kite string, can you use monofilament fishing line or twine?

I haven't ever tried fishing line or twine, but they should work to hold the folds in place. However, sinew is what gets the white line around the heart. Since the sinew is wax coated, the dye can't get under that area where the sinew was placed and it will remain white. If you don't add sinew around the heart, when you incline the shirt, the dye can run and make that area look more like a blob than a heart. To avoid that, you can just leave the shirt flat and try to leave a gap in the dye between the heart and the rest of the shirt.

I love both! This video has taught me that when I am making team spirit wear, the bottle maybe better. Can I pre-mix a few colors and keep them on hand? If so, how long can I keep them stored?

That's great - I'm glad you like both of them! How long liquid dye lasts kind of depends on the color. I've found that to get a good true dark black I like to mix my dye just before using it. If there is any leftover, I try to use it within a day or two. Other colors tend to fade more rapidly too. In my experience, the more dye it takes to mix the color (like the Dharma colors that have two *) the sooner the dye should be used. Most colors will stay dark and vibrant longer than a couple of days though. In general if you keep your dyes in a cool space they will last a couple of weeks. Some colors will last longer and remain vibrant, but two weeks is a good general rule.

yay for ice dye!.i love it. the other thing is have you ever tried leaving white space on the ice dye. in-between your color blocks to capture the splits? also Amethyst from dharma has some awesome color splits under ice conditions. i have done single color incline scrunch and it has turned.out amazing.

I love ice dye and Amethyst too! I think the purples have such cool color splits. No, I don't usually leave space on an incline. I do on other designs, but I've never tried it on an incline. I'll have to give that a try!

Love this! I had a friend see this and request that I make it. It's going to be my first ice dyed shirt! I'm also switching from jacquard to Dharma for my dyes. Any suggestions on dharma colors? I was thinking lavender lilac and nightshade. For the heart I will probably play around with the liquid and make a custom color. Might combine one of the purples with amethyst or fuchsia... Or make a purple out of my blues and reds. Just realized that I was going to use nightshade for the back which leaves me 2 powders for front...maybe periwinkle or hydrangea??? Any suggestions would be awesome as this is my first ice dye. ,🫶🫶🫶

I used Hydrangea on the heart portion. I also used Dharma's lavender and Imperial Purple on this one. I think lilac and lavender are very close in color. If you use both of those I would separate them with another purple so that they don't blend together as much. Periwinkle is a beautiful color, but it is more of a blue color.
