STORYLINE:
The coffin of former US President Gerald R. Ford arrived at St Margaret's Church in Palm Desert, California, on Friday, beginning six days of national mourning for the United States' 38th president.
Former first lady Betty Ford and her children stood at the top of the steps of the church to receive the casket while a Marine Corps band played.
A prayer service was to be followed by a public viewing that was expected to draw thousands, under tight security,
to the resort community east of Los Angeles.
Ford, who assumed the presidency when Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 amid the Watergate scandal, died on Tuesday
at 93 with his family at his bedside.
In a nod to Ford's Navy service, a sailor was deputised to fly the presidential seal as Ford's casket was taken into
the church where Ford and his wife had worshipped nearly every Sunday since he left office in 1977.
Ford's casket will then return to the Congress he served on his historic journey to an unelected presidency.
Ford will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Saturday, where 10 other presidents have been honoured.
National mourning will include a day of silence on Wall Street, with the major stock markets closed on Tuesday, the
day of Ford's state funeral in Washington, D.C.
The US Postal Service announced there would be no mail delivery or retail service at post offices that day.
Ceremonies will end on January 3rd in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Ford will be interred on a hillside north of
his presidential museum.
