I explained this to a friend the other day. The Original had: -A romance subplot that goes nowhere after episode 2 and never mentioned again. -Side characters we're supposed to care about but disappear after their episode is over. -A weird fascination with panty-shots of the main character who is 10 years old and, unlike most anime where a character is modeled after an 18+ person, looks 10 years old and thus is creepy as hell. -The most generic group of main characters that are basically just walking archetypes. -Episodes that end that feels like the writers ran out of ideas. (see episode 6) -An ending that comes out of nowhere and doesn't resolve any of the few hanging plot threads. This is such a shame because apparently the book story this anime was based on is a minor cultural icon in Japan.
