Jean Grey's orginal code name in the 1960's comics was Marvel Girl. Forge's mutant abilities is as an intuitive inventor. His understanding and connection to magic is tied to his Native American heritage. In the comics there was tension between him and his people/family because of his embracing of the "modern" scienfiic/mechanial mutant power. But in time he came to embrace both sides of himself and his heritage.

In the original series Rogue unlocked some memories from her evil days and revealed that her only powers was ability stealing. She got her strength and flight by stealing the powers from Captain Marvel, which left Carol Danvers in a coma.

also this is the old school ms marvel power set super strength, super durabilty, and flight. no energy powers and a lot weaker than the current captain marvel in the mcu. for reference rogue and captain marvel rank 5 out of 7 on the strength scale under people like colossus and thing who are 6's.
@stevenrice41742 ай бұрын
Actually Carol wasn’t Captain Marvel yet. She was Ms Marvel (Captain Marvel’s side kick) at the time and hadn’t gotten the power upgrade that came with her taking over as Captain Marvel. This is why Rogue doesn’t get Captain Marvel level powerful. Carol would also get so powerful later that she would split herself into a second body…who would go by Binary and join the XMen team. In “the Marvels” Monica’s mom is wearing Binary’s suit in the lab with Beast, which leads me to believe Monica ended up in the alternate reality that the Illuminati was in during Dr. Strange 2.

I thought this episode was genius in how it chose to tie Charles and Lilandra's story to Lifedeath, and using them to impart the same message. Storm's lie was that she'd be better off without her powers, because of the fear that being her full self would inevitably bring the wrath of all the "normal" people around her. She was tempted by the notion that making herself smaller and lesser would allow her an easier path to coexistence. And then we have Charles, who is all about preaching coexistence, but he's paired with the Jingoistic Freedombirds of Imperialism (I swear there's no satire there), who espouse the belief that they are helping people by conquering them, who convince their victims that they must cut off parts of themselves, give up their own culture, make themselves smaller and weaker and lesser, in order to fit in with the superior Shi'ar, because assimilation naturally ought to be the highest aspiration for "inferior" cultures. They ask Charles to play "educator" and "peacemaker" to people whom have already been subdued. I've been an X-Men fan my entire life, but I have to admit, neither Charles nor Storm were characters I ever found particularly relatable. This episode was the first time they really resonated with me. But I can't deny, this episode speaks to me deeply as a second-generation immigrant, whose parents were not allowed to speak their native language and thus were unable to pass it onto me. My parents wanted me to assimilate, but I haven't been accepted as any more American than other immigrants, I just became a racially-ambiguous brown woman with no culture to call my own. And it speaks to me as a queer woman in America, one who has (shamefully) spent more years and written more words preaching assimilation over pride, because for so many years my fear of abuse from heteronormative culture was greater than my own sense of self. It's crazy to think I've spent my whole life working so hard to fit in, to assimilate, to be the perfect model minority and be embraced by those who would abuse me, and here I am now pushing 40 with nothing to show for it. It's only been the past five years or so that I've really started trying to explore myself and be all I can be, and in that short time I've earned more respect and found more happiness than in all the decades of trying to fit in.
@jamescheddar48962 ай бұрын

The Charles/Lilandra romance did happen in the comics, but it was a little different. In the comics Charles died in a battle with Grotesk, but he was actually replaced by the comics version of Morph, while Charles was in space. So Morph died instead of Charles, but Charles was with the Shi'ar, planning to stop an invasion of earth by a race of aliens. So when Charles returns, everyone is surprised, and thought he was actually dead. Gladiator is an analogy of Superman, having very similar power sets.
@dngillikin2 ай бұрын
Unless there has been a major retcon in the last 20 years, Charles was not in space with the Shi'Ar between his apparent death in X-Men #45 and #65. According to Charles' explanation in #65, he spent the months since his apparent death secluded in a sub-basement lab in the mansion preparing to ward off the Z'Nox Invasion. When Charles joined together all the psychic energy of humanity and channeled it through Jean to drive off the Z'Nox. The mental energy released somehow linked Lilandra's mind with Charles, bonding them and eventually drawing her to Earth ca. issue #104. That's how it was portrayed in the comics on initial publication.

Her name is Jean Grey Summers. Her superhero alias is Marvel Girl (however, this has long been abandoned, and in the comics it was picked up by Rachel Grey Summers). So, in the end... unlike most X-Men who have two... she has one name. That's it. She has no more names. Madelyne Pryor is an entirely separate woman. The Phoenix is an entirely separate entity.
@sakisaotome67532 ай бұрын
Rachel hasn't used that name for quite a while herself. has since had at least 2 names since then (Prestige, and Askani). as for Phoenix ... that is extremely complicated. because she didn't always have the powers of the phoenix, and other characters (such as racel) have had the power of the phoemix as well. but she most certainly goes by Phoenix (she literally has a own series entitled Phoenix which just began this month) however things really got muddled in Xmen forever where it was stated that Jean is the Phoenix and the Phoenix is Jean. essentially they are two different aspects of a single being in different forms. then again this none of that may be relavent for xmen 97 as it is its own universe.

The Danger room's tech was Shi'ar technology in the comics. Charles and Lilandra have been FWB for a long time. ''The lie" is Storm telling herself that she would be better without her powers. Notice that through this episode and Part 1 the Adversary references Storm's conversation with Jean in episode 2, where Jean said she would like her then unborn son to be "normal". Storm says that she has "daydreamed" about being normal. The Adversary is basically Pennywise the Clown (from IT) but instead of feeding on fear, feeds on misery. Through the episode The Adversary taunts Storm about this lie, about how humanity will hunt her down if she is anything but normal. Storm feels like she is being buried by the pressure of existing: she wields this power every time she uses it to save humanity, they hate her more. She finally triumphs when she realizes that The Adversary is just mimicking her fears and telling them back at her, "You all are an echo of who I am". Finally she decides to face the truth and decides to face the world as her true self, "so let them thunder, for I am lighting."

Lilandra initially reached out to Charles telepathically from the other side of the galaxy, seeking his help. She isn't a telepath, but she was somehow able to reach him anyway because they were each other's true love. At least, that's how it happened in the comics. I can't quite recall whether the show had this happen the same way, but I can't recall them not having it happen this way. Gladiator is the praetor of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, who are basically super-powered members of various planets conquered by the Shi'ar empire. He's essentially one of Marvel's equivalents to Superman.

Carol Danvers has a long, deep history with the Uncanny X-Men, because shortly after she was made into Ms. Marvel, her comic book was written by Chris Claremont, the guy who took over the reigns for the Uncanny X-Men in the late 70s until the late 80s and early 90s and is responsible for a lot of the background stuff the X-Men cartoon, and X-Men '97, is adapting (not everything, but a LOT). Him and the various artists on Uncanny X-Men are responsible for taking what was then an almost forgotten team and turning them into THE best-selling, best known, most read comic book for YEARS. Ms. Marvel's first book only lasted a couple years, but Claremont had grown fond of Carol and always looked for places to put her when he was working on other projects. Rogue had originally been created by him (and artist Michael Golden) to be an enemy of Ms. Marvel, as a hench(wo)man for Mystique (also co-created by Claremont) who could mimic/absorb Carol's strength and give her a fight on equal footing. Between the end of Ms. Marvel and Rogue becoming an X-Man, Rogue's powers went beyond what they usually do and absorbed almost all of Carol's powers (this is why Rogue can fly so high and punch so hard), and put Carol in a coma for many years. She eventually woke up, but without her powers, and became a recurring character in the X-Men comics until she was experimented on by some aliens and became the superheroine Binary (and even after, for some time). Eventually she got her original powers back (Rogue and Carol sharing them, essentially) and went by name Warbird, becoming an Avenger (again) and developing a drinking problem to deal with all the crap she'd been through, until deciding once and for all to get her life together and assume the mantle of Captain Marvel (she had originally been introduced in the original Marvel Captain Marvel's second appearance, as head of security for the place Captain Marvel's secret identity briefly worked at, with something of a Lois Lane role, despite Captain Marvel already having a love interest... but that's a whole other story). The Lilandra stuff is indeed a part of the comics. Charles and Lilandra are often a romantic couple, when they're not a star-crossed couple. Forge's mutant power is to create inventions that work despite sort of breaking even comic book science (he's very smart, but sometimes even he isn't 100% sure how his stuff works), and he's also a shaman, or medicine man, of his tribe, so he knows a good bit of Native American magic, too. Nearly every X-Man has died at some point or another, either actually died on page or been presumed dead. They usually come back (fictional heroes, being fictional, don't have to stay dead).

But unlike everyone else, because it really didn't describe her or her powers, by the time you reach the late 60s & 70s, they aren't really calling her that a lot. And by the time you get to giant sized X-Men #1 in the late 70s, which introduced the international characters like Storm from Egypt, Wolverine from Canada, Colossus from Russia, Banshee from Ireland (the guy with the Sonic voice in 1st class)Sunfire from Japan, & native/ Indigenous American, Thunderbird, who was killed shortly after being introduced. The guy with the red and blue costume that looks native American, running in the X-Men intro may be Thunderbird. But it also may be John Proudstar's (Thunderbird's real name) younger brother James, who hated the X-Men at his inception, for getting his older brother killed, and took on his older brother's name (Thunderbird ) & costume, & became an X-Men villain. But eventually saw the error of his ways, changed the costume a bit, took on the name Warpath, and in the late 80s/early 90s, became a member of Cable's X-Force team. Which was Cable & Domino, like from the Deadpool 2 movie (Yes, Josh Brolin was Cable & Thanos) A girl named Boom Boom (who can create little bombs with her hands) Warpath, and some kids who were in Xavier's last class who were in an 80s book called New Mutants. (The Last Fox X-Men movie is New Mutants , you might want to do a reaction. Anya Taylor Joy plays Magik who's Colossus's younger sister in the comics) Those kids were Cannonball and Wolfsbane, who are in the new Mutants movie. Roberto Decosta (Sunspot) who's the new guy with Jubilee in this series, comes from New Mutants, and he's also in the movie.

I laughed about you asking about all of Jean Grey's names. Surely there's a couple more because comics simply do so much, but you kind of know them all, I guess. There's still plenty to learn about Jean, I think she was always a person of great character, she's just a little too tied up in soap opera drama. 😂

They had a love story back in the original show, they just continued it.

Much like Star Trek, the sci-fi side of Marvel has various planets and Empires in conflict. The three Empires most explored in the classic comics are the Kree, the Skrull, and (especially in X-men comics) the bird-like Shi-ar. As briefly mentioned in this episode, the X-men helped overthrow the prior "Mad" Emperor of the Shi-ar and thus bring Lilandra to the throne, and she did have a long romance with Charles. The Shi-ar were also a major part of the comics (and cartoon's) Pheonix Saga, wanting to kill Jean Grey to eliminate the threat to the galaxy (after she wiped out an inhabited planet under the Pheonix's influence.) Gladiator, the head of the royal guard, is basically a version of Superman. Marvel has a few that have been created over the years when writers have wanted to do an unofficial Marvel vs. Justice League kind of story.

Just remember, in the comic book universe no one who is dead can’t be brought back
@sakisaotome67532 ай бұрын
it was even the job of 5 mutants to just resurrect people all day long for a time.

I haven't seen the reaction yet but I hope she knows that Storm is super claustrophobic. She was trapped under rubble in the arms of her dead parents as a child for days. Just something that is vital to Storm's background in a lot of storylines. It's something writers use to help balance her OPness and or show her strength like in this episode. She has trouble conquering her fear for herself but never if it's for the sake of someone else.

Gonna be honest, I thought you were going to cry when you saw that nightcrawler replaced you-know-who in the opening credits.

Just a friendly reminder that Xavier had a daughter with the Lilandra and just never bothered to meet her. At least the cartoon addressed his first kid he abandoned. He has a third kid he didn't raise, but in his defense he was mildly dead at the time.

27:35 It's safe to assume almost every character has died in the comics at some point xD
@sakisaotome67532 ай бұрын
thats for sure. you check them out on the wiki and the number of charcters who are listed as alive rather than alive (previoulsy dead) is almost non existant but there are however few some that have managed to never die yet
@sakisaotome67532 ай бұрын
but yes everyone single member of the xmen on this team has died at least once in the comics.

Forge is a shaman on top of being a mutant, although he is not nearly as powerful a spell caster as say a Wanda Maximov or Dr. Strange, he tends to stick to his technical skills granted by his mutation

Hey Angela, so we know mutant powers are trigger by extreme emotional events so after the watching the last episode what would be YOUR mutant power that would get unlocked ? 😜 If I could pick my power mine would be telekinesis because I’m lazy 😅 like getting situated and comfy in bed and then having to get up again to grab the tv remote 🥴 or forgetting to grab my book off the shelf, leaving my phone on the table, etc little things like that would be easier with telekinesis 😅 also phased telekinesis that way if I forget something in another room I could just think about it and it would fly through the walls and come directly back to me 😂

I don't like it when I hear you call yourself stupid particularly because it is not, in the least, true. In watching, now, about 10 of your videos, I have always found you remember the most minute details (ones I could not remember on my best day) and have profound insights into what you are watching and the most honest reactions. In the last video, I just wanted to give you a hug and hold your hand because you were so upset. So please realize just how great you are and realize that you're dealing with a ton of information and that you are doing just fine, thank you. Keep up the great work and I'll will remain a loyal fan as I watch things with you. I'm about to watch episode 7 myself. I will like watch the four remaining episodes tonight and watch your reactions to them starting tomorrow. Be well!!

The lie storm believed was, that her powers were gone for good and that that was just her life now. Forges machine worked, but she had already accepted what has happened to her. So that is the lie.
