One fact about old cars. They're always full of new surprises. No such thing as a quick job I've found. The ski hatch in the rear seat upright was always useful for transporting long thin items, such as wooden gate posts. I needed to replace a post after a Winter storm had snapped one of mine. Went round to my local hardware depot and picked one up. As I got back to my 740 a guy was sitting in his hot hatch, parked up next to me & he couldn't quite figure out, how my boot swallowed up this post, 2 metres or so, with the boot lid completely down? The 2 front seat head rests, have removable padded sections. With the padding out, the headrest frames look quite retro and seemed to make the cabin, look and feel brighter? Rear visibility is much improved. Probably just an illusion. Personal preference👍🙂

I love this channel, all other channels play around with expensive out of reach cars for a hobby. This channel shows you don’t have to spend a fortune to buy an interesting car, plus the restoration costs are far more affordable.

This is typical when you start to tackle rust. You find more than you expected. The magnetic tool is an absolute lifesaver. It got me out of a pickle when I dropped the timing chain tensioner into the sump of the 2004 Corsa C that has been featured on my channel.

I just lost my 1985 740 Turbo Diesel Volvo. :( The body was in great shape but the turbo had a small leak, and the fuel injection froze up and I couldn't put anymore money into it, as I am not a mechanic. Off to the salvage yard it went. I hope someone like you finds it and brings it back to life!

Much younger than that! My brother's old 2006 mk1 Mazda 6 was surprisingly crusty around all the suspension parts and along both inner sills/floor joins. The rear arches were starting to go as well. It was only 7 years old at the time he had it.

I love seeing 80s cars in Britain! From what I could tell anything under 2005 or so is pretty dang rare over there by this point, with cars older than 1995 being basically completely unheard of. Here in the US I still see 90s and even 80s cars every single day. Now all you need is an 80s Ford Orion! XD

The Scrappage Scheme destroyed thousands of wonderful retro cars, the owners often taking the £2000 thinking it was great deal but were actually being ripped of on genuine classics (original Range Rovers, Alfa Spiders) mostly being weighed in for terrible sub compacts. Also the culture of PCP payments to lease a car from the dealer and change every 3 years has become normal, but there is a ground swell of appreciation retro cars with more clubs appearing online and many feel its more environmentally sound to keep a car going longer than build a lower MPG version.

Rather than hammerite, whack some zinc primer on it and underseal/paint then underseal over it. Hammerite is a total shadow of its former self and doesn't provide the protection it used too. Also, the weird alkyl composition of it makes it a sod to sand, paint over or weld near in the future. Not a complaint, just a suggestion. 😀 Would like to thank you for a beyond brilliant channel too. You seem to be a lovely bloke and you churn out properly good content! Really enjoy all of it, plus seeing some cars driven and studied in depth that I unfortunately will not have a chance to own myself is amazing. Everyone thinks these old Volvos are so heavy but a Volvo 740 only weighs 1370 kg compared to a newer volvo v60 from 2014 witch is a smaller car and weighs 1644 kg. And a new Mercedes E-class probably weighs 1800 kg or more
@spainter1985
@spainter1985 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, they're not as heavy as you might think for their size
@andrewbarrett7207
@andrewbarrett7207 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I used to own a 740GL for about 14 years and I think the kerb weight is even lighter than 1370kg. I always thought it was 1250kg (kerb, not gross) which seems to be confirmed here www.automobile-catalog.com/make/volvo/740_760/740_760/1990.html. I was always surprised, because when I finally changed mine for a smaller but more modern car, it weighed the same - presumably because in the intervening decade (my 740 was 1987, and my current car is 1997) safety stuff like airbags etc. has been added, and now cars are even heavier because, presumably, of yet more safety kit. I'm not sure a modern Mini is much less than 1250kg! In fact, a Mini One, according to this www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=617815 is 1275kg for the petrol version! Good video though - nice to see how various rust patches can be fixed with some welding, although I suspect it's not quite as simple as you make it seem.

My 240 is 2957 lbs dry. Why does everyone think they're heavy. They don't even drive like they're heavy
@Bratfalken
@Bratfalken 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, they aren't that heavy at all, but they need very good winter tires if you get ice on the road, the 740 is easier to oversteer than the 240 which is more subtile and doesn't send the rear out as abrupt, you need to counterturn faster in the 740 to keep it the right way around in slippery conditions. There where many who put weights in the boot during winter to keep better grip, but then you tend to go straight in tge corners, I think most this has to do with the more square wheelbase/trackwidth than the more narrow 240. But with some training you can really use it for drifting in slippery weather as the engine doesn't have much umph! ;) 116hp isn't much to race with, even with the relativly low weight.

An excellent repair. Way better than the existing efforts. In Victoria (Australia) it is not permissible to cut and repair chassis sections. You are supposed to put in a whole new thing, like a whole subframe rail. VicRoads are very anti old cars. You are fortunate that it is allowed in the UK. Keeping older cars going for longer. Hope there are no more surprises. Cheers.

Sorry to see, yet Volvo's do rust. After doing up 8 of them I know. After all, steel rust - it's nature. However the 940 and 960s tend to be much better. So are the V70 II (the series after the 850 based V70) and the S80 in my experience. Older 240s can actually rust quite a bit...
@randomesteven3935
@randomesteven3935 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely.. Not gonna argue that Volvo's don't rust, but rather, I'd argue that for their age, they barely have the rust that some cars do at half their age.. My dad has a friend who used to work on car panels back in the 80s and 90s. He sees more new BMW, Merc and Audis coming through his shop for rusted bits and pieces than Volvo's. Of course, those aren't very new but a few years old..
@jusb1066
@jusb1066 4 жыл бұрын
Of course they do but in context, they certainly had very little issues during designed lifetime, when it was common to have cars welded several times over the years, Volvo at the time generally didn't need welding, fast forward to today when cars with great bodies go to scrap

@@randomesteven3935 that's true of newer Volvo's. Not for older 240s, they do rust quite badly. And I compare similar cars: I tend to buy very cheap cars with a high mileage. To me THE strength of Volvo are the engines, red block, white block as well as the diesels. I have had a petrol V70 with over 650000 kms and a diesel V70 with close to 600000 km they were reliable, fast and fun to drive!

@@carsyoungtimerfreak1149 like I said.. Not saying you're wrong.. And you're probably spot on about the early 240s as those are the most common to be reported rusty...

Old volvos,like later 240,740,940 had galvanized thick and quality steel.So they are not prone to rusting.Old audi 80,100 they had also galvanized metal.But all other european cars did not,maybe some but mercedes,opel and so on they were rusting a lot.Problem with old volvo's is that no one did not think about them be on road for so long.So no one never changed any rubber seals on doors for example.This is a way for water to come in,usualy most of this old volvo's have isue with lower part of doors.

It’s not a very hard job taking all the seats and carpets out on one of these, I seem to remember getting the front seats out took me a while till I worked out how they are secured, I took all my carpets out to clean them and ended up jet washing them and they came up like brand new.. mind you that was in the summer when I could leave it out to dry. Removal of the centre console is not as bad as it looks at first.

I was welding a Mk II Cortina with rubber mats, I carefully pulled them back and asked my brother to fire-watch while I finished welding, he got bored and went to get a drink, I noticed a funny smell, then saw flames only to get out from under the car to see the rubber mat nicely ablaze, one new seat, carpet and washed headlining the car was back up and running, not my best moment, only use a trusted source when needing a fire warden.

That pesky hoodie cord at the start was trying to stop the Volvo love from starting. What welder do you use? I need to dabble with one to fix a ride on mower deck so need something that is simple to use. Liking the Swedish series btw.

You can pick up a cheapo impact gun for around £70 and it will be powerful enough to crack wheel nuts and stuff, i had one but the battery was the old ni cd type and died( part charging and running it completely flat I guess) the newer ones come with Li on battery's so are better I would say.

Wheel nut torque I believe on that should be 100nm...as its steel wheels. I only do my 2008 mondeo up to 120nm, and some say that is over tight...

The wheel brace will be in the tool roll. It’s a box spanner/tube and round bar (if it’s the same as the 240).

Considering the age of the car rust wise it isn't too bad , it's a shame the weather isn't the best for drying out the carpets . Any more plans for a carport?

Wish I found a 740 with this little rust. Been fixing rust issues on my own 740 for s couple of months now. Mine is much easier to fix as it is stripped down. Only bare chassis left
