Thank you so much for the video! I liked and subscribed now. Our furnace was blowing cold air and my wife was about to make the call to the repair man. I was like, "Wait!! KZbin has everything on there. Let me see if I can find a video for help." She gave me 30 minutes because its cold here in the midwest. So BAM!! In 15 minutes, my furnace is back to blowing hot air. Also, we are first time home owners so I am learning as the days go by. Thanks again!

@flashy5150
@flashy5150 2 жыл бұрын
Earlier,I mentioned that you forgot something and I replied saying that it was the “igniter” that is a most common problem, which it can be, it can get damaged really easy, but the most common problem that I have found of a furnace blowing cold air and the fan continuously blowing, is the “flame sensor”. It’s found sticking up through the bottom, in the back of the farthest left burner tube. It tells the control board that there is flame and if there is no flame, it will shut off the gas immediately. If this gets carboned up or dirty, it won’t be able to sense properly and the burner won’t ignite. The furnace will usually go on for 3-5 seconds, then shut off, then keep repeating itself, all while the fan continues to blow cold air. The “flame sensor” needs to be cleaned. This usually has a screw or a nut holding it in and is easily removed. Take it out and it will look like a thin steel rod, a few inches long with a couple of wires attached to it. Take a scotchbrite pad, a clean one, with no oils on it, and gently rub the dirt off until it shines a bit again. Give it a quick wipe with a soft clean rag and screw it back in. You may need to put the cover back on the furnace to make it start as some furnaces have a safety kill switch under the lid. Turn your main power switch to the furnace back on and it should fire right up like new. If you do things in your basement or home like I do, this “flame sensor” can get dirty really quick. I airbrush with paint which sends particles through the air and I also make bread with flour that travels through the air and these powders can settle on a hot flame sensor and burn their way onto the sensor, which makes it dirtier than normal. The buildup will stop the sensor from working. You should always keep the area around your furnace as dust free and clutter free as you can, as the furnace needs it’s room to breath, about 2’-3’ feet minimum. If you have boxes piled up, 5 feet high, 1 foot from the furnace, it won’t get adequate breathing space and will likely over heat, putting stress on all parts and is dangerous. I just had a problem with my furnace not heating and, l forgot when I changed the filter last and it was 4 months ago, and I was making a lot of pizza dough, with flour. So the filter got clogged with this floating flour being sucked in through the return air duct. I changed the filter and she fired right up with no issues. So if changing the filter doesn’t rectify the problem, your “flame sensor” is the most-likely next culprit and easy to clean. JUST MAKE SURE TO TURN YOUR MAIN POWER SWITCH OFF BEFORE DOING ANYTHING INSIDE THE FURNACE. Cheers

I see the switch rotating to open the hot water valve “this unit uses hot water to heat”. You know what happened when my “high limit switch” was not turning off the fan. I cleaned the filter and while waiting for my “new limit switch” to show up, I thought, what the heck, I pulled out the “flame sensor”, and as I was removing it, I noticed that the screw holding it in was very loose. So I removed it all the way to clean the sensor, it was pretty dirty, I put it back in very tight and I have not had a problem with the flame sensor or the limit switch and my furnace has been running like brand new ever since. Maybe the flame sensor was sitting on a diagonal, and wasn’t correctly sensing the flame and it caused both to malfunction. It was a good thing too, because they sent me the wrong “limit switch”.😜👍😉

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders How it fixed the problem, blew my mind. I didn’t know these two parts work together. The next time it happens, the “flame sensor” is what I’m checking first. Actually, I emailed the company that I bought the “wrong sensor” from and he told me that I can still use the “high-limit switch” that they sent me, but it just has a narrower sensor field than the one that’s in there. Which is good to know, now I have a spare one. I did tap the back of the “limit switch”, maybe that’s what made it work again, but like I said, it’s still working today. Cheers

Hi, my Americal Standard Gold series furnace starts blowing out cold air everytime when in restarts after reaching the max temerature set. Why?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Great question & and hopefully we can help answer this. Your furnace will run a pre-heat ventilation test to ensure that your system is receiving the proper amount of ventilation/air prior to igniting the burners. During this test, the blower motor is running and pushing room temp/cold air through the system and out of the vents. Once the system confirms it has proper ventilation, it lights the burners and begins pushing heat out of your vents. Once the home is heated to the preset temperature on your wall mounted thermostat, your furnace turns off...however...the blower motor continues to run for a few minutes to push any and all remaining warm air inside all of the ductwork and out of the vents into your living space. No warm air goes to waste. Hope this helps. 😎👍

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. That is normal. Once furnace starts, it goes through a ventilation test phase to ensure the system is getting the proper air flow. @DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Its normal for your furnace to turn on and blow cold air for the first 2 minutes or so. Once the system verifies it has proper ventilation, it will then ignite the burners & provide heat. After your thermostat senses that your home has heated to the preset temperature, it will turn off your furnace. Once your furnace turns off, your blower motor will continue to run for an additional 2-3 minutes to ensure all heat is pushed out of the ducks and into your rooms. 😎👍🔧🔩

1 WEEK AGO- my basement starting getting COLD drafts. As in I went from wearing a shirt, to 2 sweaters PLUS a winter hat. I can feel the breeze. Even upstairs main level - -- I feel some cold breeze. BUT....my heat is working! There's warm air coming from vents. I've felt every vent in the house - NO cold air from there. I do hear a 'thud' once in awhile I assume it's from furnace. Based on these clues - is it possible the furnace or HVAC is responsible for this sudden cold-ness in my house? BUT if so - and cold air isn't coming from vents ---where the heck could it be coming from? Appreciate any opinions...maybe it's not furnace and it's something else but this is weird, just started a week ago.

It’s possible that the furnace filter is a bit dirty and ready to be replaced. Since warm air is coming out of vents, your furnace seems to be working properly…🤔 The loud thud is a bit concerning if it’s extreme however when the furnace turns on, the built-in capacitor helps alleviate the electrical hit (thud) on system. This prevents your lights from dimming or flickering every time furnace turns on. It’s possible that a faulty capacitor is causing issues. Keep us posted. We most certainly do, and good morning. Just poured a ☕️ and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. It’s normal for system to blow cool air in the very beginning as well as the remaining 90 seconds after burners cut off. In the beginning, the inducer motor and fan are running and performing a pre-ignition test to ensure all systems are a Go. On the tail end of the cycle…when the furnace has brought the homes temperature back up to the pre-selected temperature set on the wall-mounted thermostat…once the burners turn off, the system continues to blow air for 90 seconds or so and push all remaining warm air out of duct-work as well as perform its own cool-down phase. Kinda like a workout on a treadmill…after a 30 minute jog, the treadmill has you do a 5 minute cool-down. Thanks for watching, is filter installed correctly? On the side of filter, reference the arrows. The arrows should be facing the furnace.

@DIYwithMichaelBorders I always install the filter with the arrow pointing toward the blower motor. It's been working intermittently blowing cold and warm air not staying up to the temperature set.

@@chynadoll09 Thanks for the follow up. We would try a different filter, even though you mentioned it’s brand new. It’s possible that the gas feed is turned up slightly to high. It’s best to have an HVAC tech adjust feed output.

@DIYwithMichaelBorders I had an Hvac Tech come a few weeks ago and they ordered a new flame sensor and limit switch. They also turned the gas pressure down while waiting for parts and it worked fine for three weeks then started to do the same thing right before the parts were replaced.

The igniter is the most common. it burns red hot every time. it breaks down and loses contact. A continuity test is all you need to know either way.

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Has any MX been completed to furnace in last 12 months? This will help us pinpoint whether or not any recent MX is related to issue. Is your fan pulling generated heat from your furnace. Is air coming out of vents warm? Keep us posted. Enjoy your day! 😎👍🔧🔩

@@ronaldsosa951 Thanks for the reply. We recommend replacing filter. A clogged filter can lead to degraded ventilation within the system & the furnace will continue blowing air however for safety purposes, it will turn off heat. Keep us posted. 😎👍🔧🔩

@@geraldbartlett802 Thanks for the reply & if your furnace is operating normally by heating your home to the proper temp setting you have selected, all is working properly. Once the furnace heats your home to the set temperature, your furnace turns off and begins a 60-90 second cool down phase. The cool down phase allows any and all remaining hot air in system to be pushed out of the duct work and into your home. Once hot air is removed, room temp air & then cold air will come out events until your furnace turns off. Hope this helps. 😎👍🔧🔩

Filter arrow is to keep the correct side pointed to the blower reason is the one side of filter is reinforced so the filter matireal does not get sucked in !

@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thanks for watching, this is usually caused by interruption in the gas flow. Make sure your gas line valve is in the full open position. Also, make sure your gas line is properly secured to gas valve. If you’re still having issues, a minor adjustment to your gas valve may fix problem. Please keep us posted. 😎👍

I have hot air blowing everywhere in the house except for one bedroom. Hot air goes from the furnace to the duct but the closer it get to the vent that blows out of the air it's cold and cool air blows out of the vent not hot air. Any suggestions?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Is it a return duct? Can you manually open & close vent by hand using the adjustable wheel or lever? If there is no adjustable wheel or lever, or the vent is high up on the wall closer to ceiling, it’s most likely a return duct. In this case, it will not provide warm air. Keep us posted. Enjoy your day. 😎👍🔧🔩
