Yeah, the scifi concepts felt timeless since they were just futuristic concepts, and some of the social commentary had such a thick layer of detachment from what inspired it that it didn't feel dated. Like the evolution one coming out when questions about if it should be taught in schools was alright, since it wasn't set place in a school with like Hubert and wasn't about tesching, it was about the more general topic of evolution deniers and scientific certainties. But man do they have a hard time with it. Like remember the EyePhones episode? Remember the birther controversy episode? That stuff aged so badly. The Traveling Salesman problem is more of the "can it be solved quickly" type of problem rather than a specific solution. In CompSci, every problem can be brute-forced, but every additional possible iteration means that the run-time can go up factorially (polynomially, in CompSci terms). If there's 2 cities, there's 2! routes, or just 2, and with 3 cities, 3! or 6 routes, but you get to 10 cities and it's 3.6 MILLION possibilities that need to be checked. 70 cities is literally more than a google (yes that's a real word) of routes. So obviously CompSci people want a fast way to solve the problem that doesn't involve checking a google of possibilities. A bigger question in CompSci is if it's even possible for a problem to even have a quick algorithm. The joke of course is that the ancient robots have indeed solved this problem.

What I find annoying about topical storylines in Futurama is how no one in this future time knows what an NFT is other than the kids. Maybe it's one of those things that goes in and out of fashion? Hard to say. I think I miss the Futurama that would use their character from the past to explore these future concepts that he obviously has no idea about. Or the episodes that take a modern concept but give it its own Futurama twist kinda like the Binge Streaming last year, or the global warming one where they only have to deal with it because humanity has literally been putting off the problem until it was basically too late

If the game itself had, say, Bender being exhausted while trying for the ball while the other players ran past quickly, then yeah. If Bender had cheated with an armadillobot, then yeah. I would dare say this was a pretty solid episode- Bender’s plot of discovering his family and his roots was a fun Bender existential plot, like you said, and the subplot of the heist was pretty fun. The robot village had a lot of fun details and Danny Trejo as Bender’s cousin was a great guest star to pull. And Farnsworth’s plan for the heist with the model and how infestations of pests were what got the group caught was a really fun idea. Also, I was happy to see the NFT trend not dwelled on too much and John DiMaggio’s delivery on the last line of the episode for the dig at NFTs was really funny above all else. Though I do think they lose points slightly for me with how the episode just kinda jumps in to “NFTs are a thing.” The Crypto and Covid episodes both acknowledged their topics of the day as things that existed in our time, rather than just jumping in, which gave off the vibe they were just treating it like a new thing. In general, I think How the West Was 1010001 was the best topical episode of the Hulu era. It introduced the concept and brought attention to the rise and fall of crypto briefly before largely focusing on their fun western/gold rush storyline, with most of the crypto focus relating to the science and tech side of things, rather than just making fun of the trend. This episode was, by contrast, the weakest at featuring the current topical trend, IMO, because of how much of the episode that focused on that was spent explaining NFTs and characters not understanding them. But again, the Bender discovering his roots and heist were given way more focus and elevate this episode a great deal, so it works out to be better than the Covid episode. Also, one last thing- Bender’s family all setting him up is like… the most logical way for them to treat Bender. Bender himself regularly betrays and backstabs for his own gain, so it makes sense that would be a shared family quirk. After all, Bender’s Abuelitatron already showed she has Bender’s proclivity for theft and drinking. So the rest of the family following suit made sense, given what we know about Bender.

Much like with the Eye Phone is just the iPhones we have but are just inserted in the eye and project a screen. So if they did a take on NFT’s it should be something more confusing and elaborate as the NFT’s we had today. The heist scene was funny as the Planet Express crew were trying to steal them but it just became pointless when they were just digital pictures that can be copied and sold and not one person can own it. And I do hope after this episode I don’t see a surge of Futurama NFT’s coming out. If I saw that I’d be done with the series completely.

I think my biggest issue with the episode was how they characterised Amy's kids. Their whole deal this episode was how they understand "modern" concepts more than the adults, who feel old for not getting it. But that's pretty much how Dwight and Cubert have been characterised in the past. It's not a huge deal, but introducing new characters into a long-running show allows for some new dynamics we've never seen before. It just didn't feel like they tried to take that opportunity.
@tonysladky89254 ай бұрын
Okay, Bender firing a starting pistol and hitting an owl, Dwight and Cubert's "does it look like we're on a stupid TV show, Bender being from" Mexico with three X's", and calling the crew "carnitas bags" were all pretty good bits, and I'm only at the first ad break. But holy crap, does this episode's original premise demonstrate that Futurama can't handle being topical. The transition to being about Bender's home village was a nice twist. I think it probably lost people with the NFT bit and the B-plot about NFTs, though I like the Professor planning an overly complex heist that involves an overly complex replica of the museum. Bender's "Abuelatron" was a fantastic joke, and I was glad she was kinda a major character. Also Abuelatron calling him "Bendejo" was very funny. Ultimately, every time we went back to the NFT B-plot was painfully cringe, but the Mexico stuff was funny enough to make it worthwhile. Shame they tied that back to the B-plot at the end... It occurs to me that if there had been some obviously, deliberately bad understanding of the technology involved, like the line in "A Tale of Two Santas" about Leela sounding like a broken mp3, it could have worked, though I don't know how you could make NFTs sound stupider than just actually explaining NFTs. Wait. Didn't Bender wear the Napoleon costume as seen in the NFT montage in "Insane in the Mainframe", or was that just the hat? Nevermind. A quick trip to Morbotron says it was just the hat that time.

I think they needed to explain what NFTs are for viewers who may not understand a NFT isn't property ownership, it's buying a gas station receipt and to provide a refresher years down the line when hopefully NFTs completely die out like timeshares.

Fun fact: NFTs were mentioned 35 times in this video!

I had a wild experience with this. On Sunday, I gave one of my old Futurama comics a lookover and wished for new episodes. Literally the next day was the season 12 premiere.

I really didn't care for this episode- normally the topicality doesn't bother me, but the plot felt like it was so haphazard and convoluted. However, your video did make me appreciate it a bit more so for that I'm thankful. :)

Great video! A couple things. Bender learned that turtles are able to get back on their fronts so it would make sense that he'd see the over turned turtle and trust it to take care of itself. The other thing is that Bender's family tricking Bender into getting sacrificed is so inline with what we know about Bender. Over the series Bender has been shown to love and care for the people he's grown close to but he will absolutely sell them out if the price is right. On the flip side, when he sells them out he usually has a way to redeem himself in some way like when he helped Leela escape in into the Wild Green Yonder after selling her and the other feministas out to Nixon (love that Futurama let's me talk about a robot selling people out to former president Richard Nixon I love this show). Anyway, it's possible that the Rodriguez family knew about the importance of their family garment but didn't want to sacrifice anyone inside their main family so why not sacrifice the new guy. He'll probably be fine right? Bending robots are kind of indestructible until their not lol

Wasn't the ghost one from the episode where Fry and Bender work briefly at the cryogenic lab?

11:34 you have no idea how much you hyped up this episode with this one line I have never been so excited for new Futurama* as I am right now for the next episode... *As of the ending of the Comedy Central run because lets face it we all wanted Bender's Big Score even before it became the single best Futurama story ever and we also wanted a follow up to Green Yonder because it didn't feel like the perfect ending Futurama deserved

Honestly, this episode was better than almost the entire previous season with the exception of maybe 2 episodes (The one with Kiff and Amy's kids, and the finale) NFTs are dated yeah, but this season kinda came out of the gate swinging!

The B-Plot of this episode, like the Covid episode and the episode with the Amazon parody, is an obvious case of the Futurama Writers playin' catch-up with South Park. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the next episode of Futurama has an Ozempic-centered episode or takes potshots at Kathleen Kennedy and Disney.

I wholeheartedly agree with pretty much what you say here. The NFT "topical" stuff was very dated, one of the issues with the current model of studios commissioning two blocks of releases in one production block. Otherwise, there was a lot of great stuff. Loved the design of the Abuela robot was wonderful, and there were plenty of great visual jokes with the Mexico plotline. Really got a kick out of the Museum Heist stuff too. The idea of replacing the CCTV feed with that of a scale model was wonderfully ingenious and the plot getting foiled by the simultaneous miniature heist was a great twist.

I think the ghost bender in the NFT collection is from when Bender and Fry worked for the cryo-chamber when they got fired from planet express for wrecking the ship.

I like the Bender plot it feel more original, but the NFT plot feels like "modern Simpsons" where there try to put all kinds of recent events or pop-culture references (or cameos). We need more original Sci-fi ideals that feels more like "timeless technology", try to explaining an recent technologies that may get extinct feels point less. They properly could evolve the NFT technology into something smarter and more future fitting, instead of explaining the current technology.

My favorite part was the heist of the miniature museum. That was such a classic Futurama bit. I have higher hopes for this season. It feels like the voice actors are more back in the groove too!

I can’t believe new episodes of a show set in the future feels so dated and behind on the times
@JackChristmas5 ай бұрын
I recommend re-watching the whole series. You'll be surprised how inconsistent/dated a lot of the tech is, always shifting to be "around the time the episode was made, but future". They use CRT televisions, they almost never use cellphones (and at least one instance of one has physical buttons and no screen), they go on the internet as like a one time session because Farnsworth's AOL login comes through! Futurama was always a reflection of the current era, and even in the classic seasons its references were sometimes outdated by the time of airing.

While I can forgive dated references from the animated lead time (written in 2020-21, in production until 2023, with 10 episodes held over an additional year), I give them all the credit in the world for not making this a 20 minute rant on NFT's. Unlike the Covid episode. And more credit still for being in their wheelhouse of explaining the mathematical principle behind them. Remember, The Simpsons did an NFT THOH episode last year, making it more dated. Obviously, giving Bender a family and more lore made this episode. I love hearing Danny Trejo in a cartoon, from King of the Hill to Big City Greens, even when he played Filthy the Foot in Pig Goat Banana Cricket. Not to mention Carlos Alazraqui. I agree. They could have just dumped the "Bender is Mexican" bit after one episode, but made it his lore, and it was beautifully played off here. And a special shout out to the "always finding ruins" because the indigenous robots were crappy builders.

I think the flipped turtle was shown as an Omen for what would happen to Bender in Mexxxico. I love that i was able to catch on that the winner would be sacrificed since EVERY local/native was horrible at it.
