Wow the timing of this was perfect thanks... my sentence for today in my journal was: 저니를 보러 가는데 이번에는 음악을 제대로 즐길 수 있도록 귀마개를 꼭 챙겨야겠다 but after seeing this I guess it should be this: 저니를 보러 가는데 이번에는 음악을 제대로 즐길 수 있도록 귀마개를 꼭 챙겨야한다

The first one sounds better if you mean "this time, I should bring 귀마개 to enjoy my music better". '-아/어야겠다' has stronger nuance for what you think you need to do.

I think ~겠습니다 is also a statement of intention. For example, I was once running late for work, so I told me supervisor 지각하겠어요 hoping it would mean "I will be late.". He laughed because he said I made it sound as if I was trying to be late. I also notice Koreans often say 올라가겠습니다, 내려가겠습니다, or 드리겠습니다 when they want to assure me that they are going to do something. But that's just my anecdotal observation.

That's because ~겠어요 is typically not used in the meaning of future tense (though it can be) - instead it's used for a "would~" form. If you meant to say "I will be" you would need to use 겠습니다 or ~ㄹ 것이다 (거예요, 겁니다, etc.) so it's clearer.

Hi Billy, I've seen instances of the present tense as a Present tense adjective + 것이다, and past tense with Past tense adjective + 것이다. How are they different from the regular present and past tenses?
