Loved the strain backstory. Particularly on the White Widow (which is one of the rare things I remember from my youth) and all the other strains within that same "family". It was really insightful for me and enables me to kind of group things together and navigate the current strain landscape a bit better. Would love to hear similar things in the next shows for sure! It's actually coincidental that I ordered the original White Widow (renamed to Black Widow) from Shantibaba (Mr Nice) just before I listened to this episode and I am now looking even more forward to growing it out and experiencing some nostalgic couch lock effects from it 😁 Thanks guys, this is such a nice laid back show to listen to on my drive back home from work 💪

Great show guys ! Really informative section on tissue culture got me thinking that it’s not the cover all I once thought I was. I’m on the west coast now but grew up in Connecticut an hour away from NYC and have been keeping a Piff cut alive for many years now…. It’s an ugly finished weed it’s larfy green no purple. When I show the jars to people no one cares.. but the second the Piff is sparked up it dominates the room conversation and high. Growing it is a labor of love, it’s a long flowering plant grows like a jungle very leafy and hates full nutrient regimes and if very finicky. That being said it will go everywhere I go. It was a very hard cut to get. I went 20 years smoking it without ever touching the plant. I consider myself a steward of the Piff. I want to see that genetic and smoking experience live on into the future. And come the day I get old I hope to pass it off to more passionate weed nerds like us.

@@notsodog8416 I agree I also agree that instagram ushered in a new way of presenting the plant and assessing its worth based off visuals. All that being said Piff went for 20$ a g back then in the northeast and goes for 20$ a g now, a true testament to its legacy. The future of weed is not lost. I think the more accessible information and small groups of dedicated weed nerds spreading good information can help move the conversation away from visuals and back to merit based popularity.

Notso's right on tissue culture messing with hormones. Figs that are propagated through tissue culture revert back to juvenile hormones and take much longer to fruit than just growing out a cutting/clone

I would like to say I think the way the show sticks to the small farmer in this current landscape and the fact the current news is really constantly highlighting the issues or the fallout from the issues says they are spot on. To be able to always continually add in the bigger context of how we got here and then contrast with the craft beer/liquor bars/lounges needs to be continuously preached from everyone not just Notso and Crybaby/ this show. It’s not legal til we have home grow and direct access to small farms written into our state constitutions. Eff this federal BS. This show is by far one of the most important. Others doing great things don’t get me wrong but I don’t see this quality of content from anyone of this level of verified historical significance with this plant. It seems Notoso has seen the gap he needs to fill for the people. IMO that is of course. 🙌🏽💯

Great podcast. My bright idea for your content #1 You guys have a huge hands on knowledge of different strains etc. I think a strain spotlight segment would be real relative. Eg. Dog shit, show us some plants, buds,clones,pictures. Why it has become special to you. What are some of its defining characteristics.. pros and cons growing it etc.

1:41:30 there are also sativa phenotypes in the white family, we have a very good regional variety of Schneewittchen/Snow White growing here since the early 2000's with two minty-citric phenotypes and one that smells very catpissy but not like regular Jack or Haze. Doesn't White Widdow/Black Widdow also have such a catty phenotype? I guess the white family is known to be blandish because the growers for the coffeeshops selected always the bland but resinous phenos instead of the loud smelling and long flowering catty ones. 2:01:00 please bring the electric boogaloo and the socal/norcal/pb catpisses to Europe, either some S1's or Bx's would be so nice...Rare Dankness, Archive and Karma had a few drops with strains like Cougar Piss, Code Blue, Poochie Love and other nice crosses that really had those pungent phenotypes, but those lines always are only limited editions and generally hard to get.

I remember like everybody in the grower forums discussed loudly about the smell, but that time it was rather about charcoal filtering and mainly one-word reports of people who found it too smelly haha thinking about it made a whif of smell came to my nose, like far away ammonia but silkier and silvery, addictive

I think if you have a company and each batch or product is made more or less to meet your standard quality level, I would call that craft. Once you start having to standardize all of your inputs and buy bulk to keep your quality exactly the same for each consumer you’re getting out of craft. Idk interesting topic to try and explicitly define Craft, especially with herb because even large scale isn’t the same exact nug each the same

The reason so many of these cuts disappear is pure greed. Charging $500 per clone shows you don’t actually care if it survives or not. When I find a good plant, my first instinct is to give it to friends. There are people like me out there who grew up in the Midwest, where we didn’t have access to verified cuts. I'd love to get my hands on the 91, D, TK, Purple Urkel, Dumpster, and Lemon G-but at $500 a clone, that’s $3K! For what? That’s a lot of money to spend unless you’re planning on becoming a clone vendor yourself. So, it’s hard for me to sympathize when people cry about losing genetics while overcharging for cuts that are already at risk. Even CSI has raised prices on all the S1's, increasing them by 20%, then offering 20-25% off during sales. So what? You're really just giving 5% off? And sure, you throw in some freebies, but seriously, I'd rather have fewer freebies and see the prices go back to what they were a few years ago. Or, if you’re going to keep the prices high, at least increase the pack sizes from 7 seeds to 10. I appreciate the conversations, but let’s be honest: most are just as bad as Berner. All about the money, not saving the genetics.

I understand your frustration, and I also have issues with how capitalism forces everything to be commodified (even when it comes to preserving something as special as cannabis genetics) But in order for these plants to continue being available, there has to be a way to support the people who grow, maintain, and distribute them. Growing, cloning, and distributing cuts may be passion-driven, but isn’t just a hobby for many - it’s a business with real costs. And without financial support, how do they operate? It’s similar to why libraries are disappearing despite being free-if people aren’t financially supporting institutions (whether through taxes, donations, or spending), they vanish. While corporations like Amazon thrive because that’s where people are spending money. The same goes for cannabis cuts. I get that $500 per clone seems steep, but just like any business, clone sellers need to cover costs and make a living. For people like CSI, inflation and rising costs across the board are to blame. Of all the folks in the game, these guys do not want to charge exorbitant prices just for the sake of it. They’re balancing survival in a chaotic system while keeping rare, irreplaceable genetics alive. In a perfect world, it wouldn’t be about money and there's nothing wrong w/ sharing w/ friends! In fact, it's ideal. But until things change, businesses-even the ones we value-need to make a profit to exist. We can definitely push for more fairness and transparency in pricing, but we also need to recognize the reality of keeping a company going in a capitalist society. Also, what's a 30+ year old plant with an almost 50 year documented history really worth?

Until sour diesel came around. The strongest stuff we had was white widow, the kill and the chronic. Certain batches of skunk/Haze or blueberry were desirable too. 2003-2006 then kush/diesel seemed to really take over and the previous heavy hitters never came back around. I'm guessing the chronic in our area was chemdawg. The kill was a nl5 cut.

Here's a weed question. I know cuts matter or there wouldn't be elites, but are all the genetics still there? I'm in the prohib so my few cuts are saved from seed. The Chem91 S1 from CSI is something I always keep on hand but renew frequently from seed because they are pretty uniform. I have an off cut I saved just so I could compare it with the regular Chemdog but it's not an "elite" - just different. It has peanut butter terps, the high is great, it has thinner leaves, and doesn't eat itself. But it also pops top-nanners about week 9 just as it gets done (seed mom and clones). I did a chuck increasing a pack of Dirty Taxi from JJ to hunt through and I hit that oddball Chem91 S1 with it. Will it's progeny still have the basic Chem91 genetics or am I now stuck with that genotype and what it breeds? Not a biggie since it's not the focus of the chuck but it's a good topic maybe? Thanks!

I remember back around 91-92 brick weed was definitely prevalent but I had a friend that grew something in the backyard. I have no idea what it was but it was so good he could charge $25 a g. And it was worth it lol. Best smoke I’ve ever ran across. He didn’t have a name for it but we called it the Crippler. You were incapacitated after partaking

Nobody has ever focused on different strain grow tendencies. Nobody. except for a mention here and there. Og's are quite different than afganies. Many are aware of different strain nuances. Chems feed on themselves during healthy flower stage. The best practices for particular well known cultivars, would help thousands that haven't grown many different varieties.
