What made 2000s gaming cool? MOOD. There's def some mood in some modern games... but it's not a necessity like it was back in the days to stand out!
@Vynsent4 күн бұрын
You got that right! They had an atmosphere that you didn’t want to leave. You wanted to keep coming back for more!

The overall artstyle. The graphics were limited, but the games still looked beautiful because of the artstyle - modern games just use generic UE lighting, even if it's not even close to a realistic game! Also, old games were less cluttered - the interface was more clean, there were less popups and less particles! And finally, they were made with soul - not to earn money from battlepasses and lootboxes!
@prinzbach2 күн бұрын
@@XxSanderMLGamerXx I would especially agree with the later part > Back in the days, devs had a bit more freedom. Nowadays publisher want more (too much?) control and often derail games to appeal to a market demographic that was not intended at the start of production (that's just one common scenario that I hear all the time)... Soul is definitely something missing in AAA even when they look stunning. I am glad we have such a great Indie scene! Last bastion of creativity that dares to push boundaries. Thanks for the comment!

Wipeout was a bit of a phenomenon over here in the UK, given it was made on home turf. We had a massive, and I mean *massive* club boom in the 90s (often referred to as the "Acid House" days) during which the entire Wipeout aesthetic became a natural extension of. This vid was absolutely fantastic! The vibe and the mood of these games did a lot to capture my imagination way back when. It's hard to to articulate the feeling it gave you back then to someone today. You just had to be there. Not to say younger generations can't get into it, and I'm glad that they are, but I feel truly honoured to have been the perfect age to play these games at the time. It's like a nice, warm blanket.

the Wipeout games were EVERYTHING to me aesthetically, the game that got me into electronic music AND racing! my personal favs are the PSP games funnily enough there was one released in the early 2000's: Wipeout Fusion, a game Sony for some reason didn't distribute here in the US. the game has a lot of radical changes that i really appreciate: more open-area tracks, an upgrade system, the return of the pilot mechanic from the first game came to mind

Man, I'm not even into electronic music but those soundtracks slap. It'd be cool to have the tracks you use either displayed on the screen or in the description box. Comparing racing games back then to now shows once again how the industry was way more experimental in the past. Today's racing games mostly feel all the same because they focus on the same hyper-realistic graphics, bland open world and simplified progression systems that modern games push for. Not to mention the whole live service and micro transactions thing. We've got a few fun arcade racers but most racing games go more into a simulator hybrid. Honestly those futuristic racing games could still have a place nowadays. We gotta wait but I'm sure indie developers will fill this niche someday.

I LOVE the 1990s WipEout games, and consider them my goto racer, but I'm not here to comment about those. I'm here to comment about Kinetica: The funny thing about Kinetica was that in an act of product placement, it was accidentally immortalised in the 2002 spy film XXX. XXX is a good film, it's a dumb action flick that knows what it is and relishes in its sense of fun, but in the film, when protagonist Xander Cage enters the mansion homebase of terror group Max Anarchy, the camera lingers on a Max Anarchy member playing Kinetica on a multi-monitor PS2 set up. Anyone who has seen XXX will instantly recognise Kinetica based on that fact and moreso due to its distinctive artstyle.

Holy crap, I never knew that! That’s so awesome. I’ve gotta watch XXX now 😆
