FWD can be on par or even faster than RWD on a track, but what ultimately kills FWD on track is excessive front tyre wear.

With left foot braking FWD can push harder in corners. RWD requires sensitive control because it's easier to spin out. Basically all rally cars are AWD or FWD for that reason

Idk fwd rally cars are usually faster than a rwd car because they can left foot brake and corner without sliding on loose surfaces. It doesnt look as cool but that fwd car is gripping and accelerating around corners a rwd rally car has to slide. An awd rally car is doing what a fwd does with some power on the back tires for even more acceleration and control.

Last of F2 class rally Kit Cars, Citroën Xsara (fwd, 2 liter n/a, close to 300 bhp, 6 speed sequential gearbox, weight around 950 kg) was winning against WRC cars (AWD, 2 liter turbo 300+ bhp, weight 1230 kg) on twisty tarmac special stages. On that kind of roads light and powerful fwd car is the best.

FWD is faster HP for HP. An underpowered FWD car can easily keep up with RWD cars with much more power on tight tracks. I will admit, as a fan of drifting, RWD is definitely more fun. But to say RWD is faster isn't true. The reason why race cars are RWD is mainly because at high power numbers torque steer becomes a bigger problem, but even this is not always true. Rally racing FWD is still very common and dominates. However, for most road cars under 350whp, a FWD car would likely be much faster around a track, while a RWD car faster in a straight line. Look at the Civic Type R as an example. That car is faster around the Nurburgring than RWD cars with over double the power.
@jakefidler6112 Жыл бұрын
Fwd uses slip at high speeds aswell using engine braking into the corner till the rear moves then powering out with the slip angle, and its achieved going into the corner at much higher speeds, where as the rwd will create slip accelerating through the corner

I love it when you lose traction in fwd cars , i think its more of a skill to control the car then rwd :)
@georgekurgansky59863 жыл бұрын
I slid off a track at full speed with my only choice being to accelerate into the crash to get sideways to the tyre wall instead of front on. With rwd you would engine brake to achieve the same thing. That's what happens at a point where you are way overspeed to have any traction. If I let off the throttle I wouldn't be writing this on here. Scary. Front wheel drive over the far end of any grip is complete commitment, crawl past it little by little.
@specialopsdave3 жыл бұрын
@@georgekurgansky5986 When in a slide already with RWD, your drive wheels are sliding and no amount of throttle input will change that fact, while a FWD car in a rear-slide still has *full* grip on the drive wheels, meaning MUCH more control.
@joegomez54632 жыл бұрын
Fwd responds well enough to lift off oversteer with the right set up. And you can torque steer your way straight again. Fwd is weird, and I still don't think the car offers the same level of control as a RWD, but FWD is also more forgiving in a lot of spots. That said, Try to take a 90 degree turn at 150 Mph in either, and you'll die in both.

As an avid FWD driver, you simply cannot 0-60 the same way a rwd car does. I see no reason a FWD car can't achieve the same top speed, but the take off will never be as good. That said, yeah they are hella fun when you know how to use them, and RWD has it's advantages as well. But then again I just like cars in general....lmao. Fwd, Rwd, Awd, a lawnmoawer on shopping cart wheels, idc, the car is as boring as you make it.

many people think that rwd is faster but thats completely lie in modern times, sure rwd was better than fwd in old times but now same power level fwd cars can easily beat any rwd cars, if you dont trust my words then try it yourself, try to drive both the drive trains with same power level in a track or any real simulation game and i am sure you will notice you are getting better lap times with fwd cars
@billx42663 жыл бұрын
You are wrong. FWD cars can be very fast on tracks, look at the times at the nurburgring for FWD. Dont start an argument like "YeS But A Gt3 RS is FaStEr aNd Is RwD", that car has way more power! That weight transfer is only when you accelerate from 0, modern day FWD vehicles doesnt have any problem putting their power to the ground when they are moving, cornering speeds can also be very high, the sporty FWD cars has LSD between the front wheels.

@nightowlrally2 жыл бұрын
This is even more pronounced in rally driving, especially on loose surfaces. Additionally, because of the nature of rally driving with hairpins, off camber corners on crowned roads you have to completely change your racing line and mindset - you have to drive like you're on tarmac otherwise torquesteer tries to kill you (if you're entering a long corner and step on the throttle the car will be pulled straight in a FWD)
