It's not ideal, but something you can do to make use of others' feedback when it's... not good, is to ask for which thing stands out as not working or as working well. Oftentimes another person's critical perspective reveals the weak and strong areas but not always they're weak/strong. So then take that area and experiment, pushing it to different extremes to see how react to it. Especially if you're doing digital creations, you have the benefit of copy+paste, so you can iterate on one aspect and see if it improves or worsens the outcome. Hope this encourages you to make use of feedback!

I find one thing that is helpful for me is, turn the drawing upside down. When there's something about a drawing that just seems off to you, but you can't put your finger on what it is, look at it upside down. Often the bit that needs improvement will be more obvious that way. Putting the piece aside for a few days and then coming back to it with fresh eyes can sometimes have the same effect, but is time consuming. If there's a specific area that's a challenge for you, there's lots of good tutorials available online, just google "how to draw hands" (or whatever your area of concern) I also like to make copies of the work of other artists, as practice.

As someone who was trying to learn more terraforming abit ago to others struggling now, use a math grid book in your spare time and sketch out the curves you want to mimic either from a top down view or from a side profile and just practice making the line look as nice as you see fix in the grid book. I know how overwhelming it can get in game when shapes don’t look the same as they do in your head but when you’re sketching out ideas for a block game, grid books are amazing!

Hey fWhip, i commented on your main channel video, but i have some suggestions for world building. instead of like they said magical trees, add some big roots that protrude from the ground that belongs to the big tree next to areas with magic, to maybe help explain how they source their magic. I think that could be cool and also link together your world a bit. Also along roads, maybe add milestones to tell travelers how far away the towns are along the roads. Those are jsut some small suggestions, i absolutely love your world, it has become so beautiful!

the thing that got to me about the comment is it was also abit ablist. I have Adhd and Vision problems and hand disabilities . My ADHD makes learning very hard and unless i am very interested in something its hard for me to learn. I love watching your videos and it has helped my building, but my ADHD comes with the comparison of "He did this better" just staring at references doesn't help ether cause I can not visualize how it would work. Then my vision problems. I need specific resource packs to see things like Ores, or Gravel vs stone. and those dont look good for building, I struggle with specific shades of blue and my natural eyesight is blurry with with glasses. and i cant dedicate as much time to learn due to pain. This is my experience with learning how to build, Id rather run around the world and make hobbit holes because of it. i don't think i've heard a better description of why i hate learning games on my own. it's not that i don't want to, i need someone to guide me a little, to give me a little start and with games like lol i would definitely prefer to have someone explaining to me how they managed to memorize which key does what and how to keep your hands from moving away from them while playing. i could 'study' how other people play but i won't *learn* how they play from just watching someone. just.. watching someone and receiving a few pointers on how to memorize things on my own with how it works, like, that would be enough for me. i really want to get into various games but without knowing someone who plays them or who i can fail at the game with i keep giving them up because it is so exhausting to enjoy a game with a clear and open mind while also constantly pulling myself out of that mindset to check where my hands are on the keyboard/controller to make sure i'm doing the right thing. like, after an hour of that i'll be so drained from it that i view the game as boring and won't pick it up again

I think the copying other stuff and making it your own is fantastic advice. There are so many great tutorials for builds on KZbin where you learn that some elements are very often repeated. For example basic principles of building roofs like adding stairs on the under side of the roof, making it over hang, putting logs on the corners. Then you can add on that by learning window designs, more roof designs, more foundations etc. And once you are solid at that, you can start breaking those principles to create unique builds, like you often do fwhip. We don’t use logs at the corners consistently anymore, many different roof shapes, many colors apart from the „starter“ palette of spruce/oak wood together with stone/deepslate variants. Recently me and my friends including my girlfriend started a new SMP. Among us I have the most experience in building, and I try to help them wherever I can. My girlfriend is very new to the game and I introduced her to basic principles, which she has now adapted together with using KZbin tutorials to create unique and fantastic builds, after only playing the game for a few weeks total. I love to see them all grow as builders. I just wish I could get them more into appreciating the breaking of certain rules aswell as generally enjoying architecture and experimenting with real life buildings/reference. For me Minecraft is a form of art afterall. I’d love to discuss about this more, it’s a very interesting topic.

That was great advice and a good talk. It is so easy to get discouraged by rude people online. My advice for getting better at building, is to keep practicing, but don't force yourself if you don't feel like it. Look at the things that inspire you and see if you can make it your own in Minecraft. And if you get stuck with a build, just take a break, do other things, play other games. Or go outside and set your mind on other things. Something that I often do after completing a build is take screenshots, and look at it for a while at a later time. And then sometimes, after having looked at it for a while, I suddenly see what I could change or add (or remove if I really don't like it). Also, don't be afraid to admit it to yourself if you don't like what you've built and start over.

Fwhip, thank you so much for having this conversation. I’m into bicycling and in the bike community there are so many people out there who give the most toxic, condescending, sarcastic, unhelpful answers to beginner cyclists who are just trying to figure out how to maintain their bikes. I got a lot of those answers from people myself when asking questions. It really makes you want to quit trying and to rely on bike shops to do everything which is expensive. If people are willing to learn a thing then people should either be willing to give them actually helpful answers or they should keep their comments to themselves.

The whole point of your series is to create an immersive world and these kinds of videos where you just wander about really show that off. Great stuff. Also I think wall aquariums would work best, and then you could continue the purple rifts in the floor and do a nice ceiling, as I think a ceiling aquarium would be easy to miss and difficult to really look at, especially as you couldn't do any floor with sand and coral and whatnot.

I think in general people are getting more and more thoughtless on the internet. People just want to hear themselves talk, so to speak. Whether the advice is actually helpful, if they get likes on their comment or it gets upvoted at all they think they're a genius, when in reality they are just being kind of rude. I'm the same way with games in that I like to explore and get used to controls solo and having someone just "oh, you'll get the hang of it if we all do a group play session," is really discouraging. My advice as an okay builder, is find tutorials for a build style you like. follow the tutorial and pay attention to how blocks are coming together to achieve x, y, or z. tweak the result to see how it looks if you did this or that differently, build it on your own in a different palette of blocks to see how that looks and see what you retained. Keep doing that with different tutorials and that's what helped me. I did this with redstone too, and I am still a bad redstoner, but I can follow a tutorial to make an easy farm and I roughly know what all the parts do. I just can design a redstone contraption or freehand a tutorial because bits always get mixed up in my head.

I've taught college. Teaching people how to learn is really hard and a thing I've attended seminars on (and still don't consider myself good at). There's a process going from 'can follow a recipe' to actually starting to solve open-ended problems, and getting there for some students can be challenging. (Especially because often the best way to do it is one-on-one conversations... and that doesn't always work in a college classroom. Or on a Minecraft KZbin video.)

Also, people could actually show me how to sheild in smash bros or slide cancel in C.O.D. if we get people to learn this error and iron it out, I have a feeling there I going to be a huge, and revolutionary content boom in the next couple decades.

I think another great way to help someone trying to improve their building skills is to "chase inspiration". One of the greatest things about minecraft is that there is such an incredible amount of creative liberty. Recently, I was inspired to build a church. I knew what kind of style I wanted but had no idea how to execute it. So I googled reference pictures to get an idea for a shape so it wouldn't look just like a house and then I just did what I could in minecraft to translate it. I ended up with something I was so proud of. So chase your inspirations and don't let fear of failure stop you from finishing what you start. Even if it isn't coming out the way you were hoping for, you learn from the process and, if you keep at it, I promise, you will get somewhere that feels like progress! :)

I have loads of images on pinterest that I study. Using lego is also fantastic when way to get my head around a build.....i mean minecraft is basically virtual lego. Sometimes having a physical representation, in block form, of what I want to build is so helpful. I just piece together all those techniques and hope that I improve. I'm very much like impluse with the symmetry and geometric shapes. Trying to teach myself to also build like you, scar, gem etc.

Creativity can't be taught because creativity is uniquely individual, But it can be nurtured. I struggle with this. My creativity is not in art but in other things, so how do I "learn to build" Exactly as you said, I look at details I like and try to copy it, to better understand how the blocks work together. Little by little my storage rooms are not just flat and square, but have some layers & depth. I'm learning to hide my square builds with depth, and details. I'll never be a "builder" like the Scar's, Bdubs, Gems, and Fwips, but I'm begining to build things I am proud of because I know how much I've improved! And one more tip..... Be kind to your own creations.... You will know if you are improving so give yourself credit!!

Wall aquariums would be neat. Have four different collections of fish in each would be awesome. One could be "dangerous" fish where you put puffer and the lion type fish. Another could be bright ones. Another could be common tropical fish. This would also allow it to be more of a focal point. Having it in the ceiling requires a viewer to look up and takes away from the ambiance of seeing the aquariums in relation to the maps.

10:50 funnily enough I'm an illustrator, and I've also been a part of mc build teams and I agree! I've definitely taken alot of skills from art into minecraft like composition, colours, lighting, shadow, etc. A big way I've improved is getting reference, working with others and playing on servers like bakery or yours to see how others do a build and learning from them.

The best advice for learning how to build in Minecraft is the same for learning to build in the Sims, which is to treat it the way you would treat art and study the world around you. When you're passing by houses and buildings, look at the shapes they make. Doing this in person is also important to get a sense of scale you can't really get from photos you study. Learn about perspectives and how to play with them, like you're building a set. Just because the art is in a different medium doesn't make it any less art :)

In general I agree, and I think you pointed out a lot of good ways to help people. I would just like to add that maybe some responsibility should also be on the one asking the question. Short vague questions elicit short vague answers. If someone asks "how can I build better" without context, you can type 4 pages full with building tips or answer with "just build more". I'm just saying that if you are more specific with your questions, people will see that you put in more effort and will find it a lot easier to give a helpful answer. The best way to answer is probably to ask a few clarifying questions, but it's really nice if the context is already in the question. The more info you give the better the help you'll get. Now, to be clear, even if you ask a short, vague question, that doesn't warrant any toxicity from anybody who answers, I completely agree with @fWhip there.

I played video games when I was younger and then as I got older I never had a computer or etc for probably ten years. I finally treated myself and got myself a pc to game on if I let people make me feel bad about how bad I am at games I would have stopped playing a long time ago. I just want to hang out and laugh and play games with my friends and now I’ve gotten pretty decent at a couple games. It’s wild to me how nasty some people are playing games online and then they probably wonder why nobody wants to play with them. It’s just a game quite literally and I hate to see such gatekeeping with new people coming into games sometimes.

You're right that everyone has different levels, and learn either really fast or are slower at learning. Myself, I don't do well at fighting games or shooters. I get my ass stomped. So I'm not a competitive player, I found I liked playing solo in minecraft. Whether it's survival or just building in creative.

i'm fully convinced that there is never a dumb question. My catch on this topic is that it's better to look stupid because you asked a question than feel stupid because you never asked... It applies in soooo many situation and we know what the Darwins awards are... If you don,t just google it and you,ll discover how not asking a question can be the end of you life. My point here is that a game is never toxic, people are. And bringing awareness and kindness to the internet will never transform it in a unicorn world but at least put some hope on making this infinite place more safe... I love you pov on this Fwhip and thank you for talking about it ! Here in France our minecraft community can be overly toxic and I wanna create some content to make players realized that being kind is not a bad thing (yeah here we are...) So thank you again for being the human you are and thank you for the level of inspiration you can offer us through your content ! ❤😊

yus! I agree 100% How I learn personally is by going to pinterest. Seeing what others have done e.g. colour schemes/roof styles/ 3d building/ etc etc and then disect them in my head. I think about what I like and dont like about particular builds BUT here is the important part! ya dont have to tell them that ;) and then using those factors in builds! That is how I have started to really kill my roof designs! I can now use bright colours and interesting roof choices to create cool builds that I like! It is all about learning! Also a big one I know alot dont mention is using inspo art! I use fantasy art/sketches/models to build ! as I struggle at visualizing houses! and it is great for then seeing how things fit together!

I think a good way to learn to build is keeping it simple to a few blocks like for example the first few items that you get from the world (oak, birch, stone) or find a build style that you like. Also find pictures of different kinds of buildings to give you a better idea of how the structure is put together. I say I’m a good builder when it comes to the simple things like houses and trees.

Absolutely agree about not doing more trees around the giga-tree's base. I think more magical trees would actually take away from the big one. Could the big tree maybe get some more diverse terrain, though? Like patches of coarse dirt + podzol, and small bushes or flower patches? Just a small amount, because having a dense environment would take away from the tree too. But I think it looks empty of context right now because there's a very vanilla-looking environment next to a very custom design. It could even be something weird like using the nylium colors, as if the tree has its own micro ecosystem? Curious to hear any other suggestions.

The community I play with and am familiar with are some of the most wholesome people I've encountered. But, on the other hand, social media has (or more specifically, the unsupervised children on social media have) an unquestionable dedication to toxicity; They find humor and an illusion of ego belittling others behind the protection of anonymity. Their words ought carry no weight to those of sound mind (of course, says the guy who isn't subject to a consistent influx of countless troll comments.)

Hii, I have a question. Do you think when someone is a good builder in minecraft, they should study architecture? Because I really love building and designing stuff and I'm thinking of studying architecture but I don't know if that would be something I would enjoy studying in general. Firstly ceiling aquarium would be fantastic. Secondly I agree me and my server were just speaking about this the other day. We have players that have just started in the last year and then many of us that have had minecraft since the beginning. Luckily many of us are teachers and coaches of sport or instructors in music so we have been able to help and guide our newer members who s progress in their personal build style has skyrocketed. I find the trouble comes for older players when they see this and very humanly become jealous subconsciously. Because I have fond memories of building and progressing and changing rapidly seeing obv progress now I struggle and feel like every build I make must be the best of my ability and when it comes short it can be frustrating. I am still wanting to change and develope but have hit a ceiling. And have had people say build more. I then show them my builds and they quickly stop saying that 😂.

So what I like to do when it comes to building.. I look up tutorials on styles I want to build yes it's a block for block blueprint. I practice multiple different builds in the same style I like.. Another thing I like to do is look over the things that I've built. I pick out the different aspects I liked about those certain builds and try to put it together. then play around with color pallets and different textures. Sometimes it works out amazing and other times I have to go a different route. you can always get a little bit better every time you try

Another tip I found helpful is taking breaks. But not like cold turkey. Think of it as exercise. If your goal is to get stronger you should have days where you really push yourself and days where you just lightly work out to more or less thoroughly stretch your muscles. Same with really any skill your trying to improve. Some days you should really push your limits. Others you should just stretch. For me I'll really put my all into a dock warehouse build. Then the next day I just texture the road and maybe throw some bone meal around. Do some mining and even teraform. Then I throw my all into say a ship build. Then to "rest" I watch some of fwhips old or new videos so I'm not actually playing the game but I'm still stimulating that part of the skill I'm trying to improve. I've found that it's very helpful for my learning style and hope it can help others. Sorry if I botched trying to explain it lol.
