G Scale 3 Truck Shay DCC and Battery DCC Conversion Part 2

I just converted a 2 Truck Shay to DCC/M4 with an ESU 5XL. I preserved the fire and ash box flicker lights and the smoke unit control by supplying +10v from the 5XL to the Bachman light board. I transferred track, motor, and lights to the 5XL.

Very nice. I have the same battery in mine, i mounted it to the underside of the water tank using HD Velcro. That has worked for 7 years now. The only thing you did that I would recommend a change is leaving a plug between the battery and the loco to facilitate easier removal. Looks and sounds great, thanks for sharing.

Hey guys, Great video. I unfortunately had someone else install airwire in my train. He setup the remotes and everything. Unfortunately, the batteries in our airwire remotes exploded causing the remotes to not work. We bought new ones but now are trying to figure out how to get it to run the train. I know this is an old video but any help would be great. I feel we are missing something critical. Any common mistakes you could think of? Also what is this computer program you are using on the train?

Hey guys, on a bachmann engine like this, would you need to keep any of the original electronics if everything is going through the decoder? I wanted to keep my smoke, and was thinking of wiring it to a relay, from a function output, then using the function output for the firebox light

@@tsgmultimedia So far I have this loco spread far and wide all over the family table. Struggling on getting it back together and the lights working. Took out the main board, was able to cleanup everything but the new install, but am having trouble with my older Lenz DCC system in recognizing and reading the settings. Any more tips on LEDs?

Dan - How long of run time do you get from the battery pack you used in the Shay? Also, you did not give the specs of the battery. I tried to pause and write it down from the video, but please confirm the battery used or what you would recommend. I am building a garden railroad and will need to do this type of conversion to battery power. Great videos - thank you!

Hi Mark, Dan quit back in January, so he does not bother to check for questions on here any more. I can tell you that the battery in this Shay worked 4-6 hours, easily. If you pause the video right around 18:00 you can see it's a 14 volt lithium-ion battery branded with the name "Cordless Renovations." I suspect that if you grab a still shot from about that time frame, you should be able to figure out more about the battery's origin. Looks like there's a web site address printed on its label as well. John
