Hi Gabriel! The pilgrimage in Tinos is equivalent, at a smaller scale, to the one of Lourdes, in France: thousands of Greeks Orthodox believers walk on their knees from the harbor to the church of Panagia Evangelistra to ask for the protection and favors of the Virgin. Tinos is the most important Orthodox place of worship.

Don’t miss Pyrgos, Volax, Kardiani, Ysternia, Dyo Choria, Smardakito. The island is also famous for the many intricately designed dovecotes. The hiking trails are endless. The views are breathtaking. The combination of blue sky, blue sea, bare looking hills, white buildings is all over the place. Have a wonderful time there! Looking forward to your next videos from fascinating Tinos!

Tinos looks a lot drier than Andros. It's common in Greece for the climate/vegetation to suddenly change due to some weird wind shift or mountain blockage. And as you noticed it's same with the food and architecture, different regions tend to go for different styles.
@joeb50807 ай бұрын
Exactly, Greece has strong rain shadow effects. Most of the Cyclades are in the "dry" side of a rain shadow. Same with Attica. The Eastern Aegean (Rhodes, Samos, Lesvls, etc) get much greener. The Ionian coast is also on the "wet" side of a rain shadow.

Hi Gabriel, traveling to Tinos Island with that beautiful sunshine was an amazing day. Those Ferris are impressive for those short trips and wonderfully comfortable to travel. If I had to guess I would say some of these old towns were hit by earthquakes so people would have had to move because many of these locations became uninhabitable due to the destruction of those structures. Also, time may have played a part in aging structures that are hard to maintain.

A little background info and fun facts on Tinos. 😊 That large church is Panagía Evangleístria (Our Lady of the Annunciation). It's a Marian pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians, like Lourdes or Fatima are for Catholic Christians. It's an important pilgrimage church for Orthodox, and some Catholics visit too. Speaking of Catholic, while the majority Christian denomination in Greece is Orthodox, there are pockets of Roman Catholics in parts of the country, and Tinos is one of those pockets: the population is mixed Orthodox and Catholic, and quite a few villages are entirely Catholic. More fun facts: Tinos has a long tradition (in the modern era) of producing sculptors, and in the 19th century, Tinian sculptors have sculpted parts of buildings in other parts of the country, like Athens, Peloponnese, Corfu, etc. Also, Our Lady of Tinos is the patron saint of the Greek nation, and this pilgrimage site was tied to the Greek Revolution. Independence Day is March 25th, the same day as the Annunciation of Mary. 😊
@DaltonMirklestein7 ай бұрын
It's more important for Catholics because Mary is the emphasis for them, not for the Greeks of Slavs.
@joeb50807 ай бұрын
@@DaltonMirklestein It's unclear what you're saying. Mary is huge in Greek culture. Romania too. This is a Southern Europe thing, not a Catholic thing. Mary took the place of Greco-Roman matriarchal deities. There's similar differences between northern and southern Catholics, with some exceptions (like Mary being big in Ireland. But not so much in Catholic areas of Germany. Aug 15 is only a public holiday in Bavaria and Saarland). You seem either northern Orthodox (Russian?) or an American convert. You're in for a culture shock in Greece.
@DaltonMirklestein7 ай бұрын

Hi Gabe. According to your schedule you are still on the island of Tinos getting ready to visit some more villages. So a few pointers/interesting facts about the island: 1) It can’t be more different than Mykonos, at least by reputation. Tinos is the quintessential island for religious tourism, Mykonos is the island of sin and excess. 2) Despite being the epicentre of the orthodox Christian religious pilgrimage, it actually has a significant catholic population, about 40% of the island plus the seat of the catholic archbishop of Greece is in Tinos and not in Syros where the catholic population is numerically larger. 3) The village of Pyrgos which you said you planned to visit, is called the village of the sculptors as many very well known Greek sculptors originate from there including probably the most well known one of the 20th century Yiannoulis Halepas.
