Okay as a librarian this is going to bother me until I correct this: JORDAN PETERSON ALMOST GOT THE POINT OF PETER PAN AND THEN SAILED RIGHT PAST IT. So Peter Pan started as a collection of stories that the novelist J.M. Barrie wrote for a family of children he became very close to and eventually became the guardian of, much like how Alice in Wonderland or Winnie the Pooh were originally written by novelists looking to entertain children they either were the father of or filled in as a paternal figure for. The theme of these stories is about time, but not in the horrible, gloomy way Jordan Peterson depicts it. Instead, it's an homage to the magic and wonder that seems possible in childhood, and how it SEEMS like it would be a utopia to live in that space forever, but how everyone has to make the choice, eventually, to go back to reality and grow up or they'll be lost in oblivion forever. Also, Wendy is implied to have a cute little grade school crush on Peter in several versions of the text, but there's NO ROMANTIC STORYLINE OR LESSONS IN ANY OF THE ORIGINAL TEXTS BECAUSE THEY'RE WRITTEN FOR CHILDREN AND THAT'D BE FUCKING WEIRD. Jordan Peterson always has to make it WEIRD. Captain Hook is symbolic of, basically, strict adults who try to make children grow up too fast. His nemesis the crocodile DOES represent time (he swallowed a clock and is always ticking, remember), but he's only Captain Hook's nemesis - not anyone else's. In the books, Captain Hook comes from Eton (very fancy and very strict university) and is obsessed with being a "proper" pirate and following the rules. He's the only grownup in Neverland presumably because he left Neverland and then after university came back, and by the end of the book the time crocodile swallows him whole. The implication of this, which Jordan Peterson COMPLETELY MISSES, is that adults who try to assuage their own fear of death by controlling the young and telling them what they should and shouldn't do will eventually get swallowed by their own mortality. They're even sadder figures than a lost boy (someone who remains a child because as a baby wandered away from their parents and no one loved them enough to come get them). Lost Boys are lost because the lack of parental love means they never get to grow up. But Captain Hook COULD grow up, and he did grow up, and now he's trying to escape from the fact that he's a grownup and has limited time by imposing himself and his anxieties on those whose time is seemingly limitless. SEEMS LIKE A THING JORDAN PETERSON COULD LEARN FROM??? ANYWAY.

I remember being a young teenager, and waves of men in comment sections about anything even remotely political or feminist would be telling me and others that we really ought to look into Jordan Peterson. That Jordan Peterson was just this stellar mind, that his arguments were so irrefutable that if we'd only take a look at him, we'd immediately fall out of our liberal delusion. That he was simply objectively right, he's just so smart and his arguments are infallible. And because I was so young, and because so many people said it with so much confidence, thoughts started to creep into the back of my mind that maybe they're right. There exists this titan of a debater that could just destroy my beliefs with ease. Now that I'm older and it's become a wider trend for people to critique Jordan, I am finally actually seeing his arguments. And... this is their champion? This is your secret weapon? The pinnacle of intellect? Fucking YIKES, dude.

My ex-husband bought my daughter one of his books when she was 16. I explained his ideology about women and religion to my daughter. She was fine with me throwing the book away. That's the only time in my life that throwing a book away (no matter how damaged the others might have been) didn't bother me. And now she's a lovely adult that wasn't burdened with that pseudopsychology crap he peddles while still impressionable. She's been able to choose for herself instead of falling in with his cult.

What's really annoying is that the message he's trying to convey is actually good, but he's so self-important and tragically ineffective at expressing himself, that the point gets completely lost. What he's trying to say is basically: When you are a child, you have many possible paths in life ahead of you. But as you grow up, you have to choose one path and, in the process, sacrifice all the others. And if you don't actively choose a path and instead walk aimlessly through life, you might wake up one day and find yourself stuck in a place that you don't like and might be very hard to change. There you go. I said in a paragraph what Jordan struggled for 20 minutes to say.
@Pragabond
@Pragabond 9 ай бұрын
That is the part about Jordan Peterson that I find so exhausting. Sometimes he has decent messages to convey but even most of those are just like....really fucking lukewarm takes like "if you don't make anything of yourself it'll just get harder for you" but then just stumbles through expressing it with every brand of fart smelling and overtaxing the point imaginable until it turns into a half hour long spiel. None of it is even remarkably deep or advice you can't find in 95% of self help books but he ties in all the incel bullshit and you have a life changing father messiah

But this is exactly why Jordan Peterson has his place. There's a reason he's so highly regarded by so many people. I find many of his views to be ridiculous, but his narrative approach works for and appeals to some people. You assume his highly metaphorical and stylistic approach is him being "self-important," when if you were looking at this in good faith you might see that he is just attempting to find a way to reach people who haven't been reached through other methods.

Fun fact: Amazon has a "freelance" audio captioning gig that I "worked" for for several months as a baby transcriber. They pay barely anything, pit employees against each other to "check" the accuracy of their work, and jobs are out of context short clips of audio that an employee is expected to transcribe extremely quickly. So when a company hires this service, they're having their audio (not even video) captioned by dozens of people each working with a 30 second clip of audio. Whenever I see an obvious error like "Herc" vs "Hook" I think of the fact some poor "freelance" worker is being payed pennies to listen to 10 seconds of Jordan Peterson and desperately figure out what he's trying to say.

I’d love to speak about “how plumbers save more lives than doctors” it’s a little misleading but it does make me feel good about being a plumber. If you didn’t have indoor plumbing there would be a wide variety of diseases growing inside your house. Your waste HAS to go out of your house otherwise you WILL die of some disease or another. Ok but the metaphor of aging being the central theme of Peter Pan is actually an interesting and very supported interpretation, hook being chased by a thing that ticks like a clock and intends to consume him while he's aging is a very clear metaphor for his fear of mortality, Peter doesn't have that, he's still a kid and remains as such, but Wendy refusing to start with him could be read as her refusing to avoid growing up. Its all public health. Healthcare, infrastructure, and sanitation go hand in hand. It is why many enviromental and public health iissues need to be taken more seriously. They can all lead to a good healthcare system because a cleaner enviroment means less health risk from polution, waste, and even second hand smoke and regulations on food and drugs to better detect contaminates and uphold safety standards. Same goes for social health as well; better safety nets for the poor and better education equals better health outcomes and a decline in crime, issues like abuse, and overall a healthier population.

This reminds me of the AP Literature class I took my senior year of high school in which we were expected to write full length essays explaining our interpretations of literary works we read in class. The idea is that no interpretation is really wrong, because if you can actually write an essay that actually supports your argument, then there’s clearly some kind of real basis there. There’s always a majority of essays that look fairly similar because most kids understand the author’s intended meaning, there are a few that seem strange but they’ve supported their argument well enough that yeah, I guess that could be one interpretation, and then there’s the one kid who so obviously slept through the classes we were reading this piece. Jordan Peterson feels like he read some of the sparknotes on Peter Pan and is scrambling to pull together an interpretation for an AP essay and just absolutely failing to get his point across

Ok I'm a classics major and already Jordan Peterson is just making shit up. If you want to know why he's wrong about the name Peter Pan, feel free to read: Pan in mythical origin is the name of a satyr the Greek gods keep around on Mount Olympus because he's so goofy and talented at his flute (pan flute, named after him), everyone loves him - he's just so cool. The term Pan means "all", and they name him Pan because he is LOVED BY ALL (all the gods). He's just universally loved because he's a cheeky lil hairy guy. His name is most likely an ancient Greek analogue for types of plays called "satires" (deriving from satyr) that were humourous plays that involved music and dirty jokes. These types of plays were obviously loved by all. SO if you really want to compare Peter Pan to Pan in a theistic context, it's really unfair to say that the derivation means "god of everything" when Pan the satyr didn't rule over anything at all. It instead designated that he was loved BY everyone. So if Peter Pan's name is in reference to the ancient Greek mythology, it would more accurately mean that Peter was loved by everyone. It has nothing to do with right to rule... Pan is a common prefix. Pan-hellenic means "all over Greece". Pansexual means "all-loving" (it can mean different things to different people but anyway). Jordan Peterson is adding "ruling" to the meaning of Pan, and that just isn't inherently part of it.
@TheOctavian316

Don't forget the best aspect of Pan: panic. His scream has the ability to drive people and animals insane with panic (panikon deima) and send them into frenzies. But Pan was considered the God of nature, the wild, shepherds and flocks, mountain wilds, and sometimes of sexuality and fertility.

Not going to college isn't always about political beliefs. There's a lot of systemic issues that make it difficult for many to be able to continue education. For me as a disabled person I know that one because of government assistance I'm unable to build my assets to even pay for college. Also not to mention the massive amount of abelism from what I've heard there's a lot that needs improvement. All this saying, I know it was a small portion of the video to comment on but also I don't often see much discourse on this topic so I thought I may as well speak my mind on the matter. Oh also I really enjoyed the video, Jordan Peterson is honestly a really interesting subject matter.

As a fellow disabled person, this is very true. Tertiary education becomes very unattainable. A lot of JP's conservative rhetoric about alpha male bs, purpose, and education is very discriminatory against disabled and neuro-divergent people, their personalities and life-styles. So I find it troubling when autistic incels follow him. They need to grow out of these mindsets to grow as people, not into them further.

Ok but like that was such a descriptive dream that it makes me wonder if Jordan’s grandma actually molested him. Not exactly something to speculate about but it feels like an obvious thought.

Peter Pan is not one of grimm's fairy tales, from what I know (since I watched a biopic on a plane once) it was originally a play an English guy wrote in the 1900s the story of the play is very similar to the one we know. This guy who wrote it had a little brother that died and the trauma from that kinda fucked him up in his emotional development. As an adult he was very close friends with a married couple and their 5 children, one of the kids was named Peter. But Peter Pan was actually based on the happy parts of his childhood and how he remembered his brother. He took care of the kids once their parents tragically died of different types of cancer very soon one after another. It’s very sad, two of the kids also died before him

@@jungtothehuimang The thing is, this explanation of the corcodile being a representation of time is competely legit and is the global interpretation. I think we can all agree on that. And you haven't heard the point he was going towards with this analogy so ofc this seems like wasted time. Also at no point has he pretended to be its inventor. Now you may think that this metaphor is so obvious to the point of being understandable by any child, yet I only see criticism for it being "a ridiculous extrapolation". Look around in the comment section or in the video. I came on that video hoping to see something that would elevate the debate, but all I see is a shitshow of egotistic people just spitting their hatred on this guy for the wrong reasons. The "seemingly educated" dude in the video who says peter pan is from a Grimm's fairy tale is completely and factually wrong for example. They pause every 2 sec to make jokes and say "that makes no sense... he never comes to his point" and then wonder why they don't understand his opinion thats seems disjointed to them. Or the retards in the comments saying "how can any human being find Jordan Peterson intelligent?" while forgetting the dude has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a professor at Toronto university... he is factually above average in terms of intelligence. This video and comment section is a shitshow of people thinking they're smarter than him, of people who would rather speak than listen. Read ANY philosophy book and you'll see that what JP is actually doing is an essay. Like any essay, it's not your usual instagram story or MrBeast video but rather a complex and long explanation, using metaphors and images. But people expect bitesize thoughts, instant dopamine... that's why they're so stuck on the seemingly ridiculous punchlines they don't even care to understand. "Plumbers saved more lifes than doctors? I guess it's stupid because it sure sounds like it" when ignoring sewers literally prevented the return of the bubonic plague that decimated between 30 and 50% of all Europe, while doctors were busy spreading useless herbs with their scarewrow masks... and that's just one example amongst thousands showing that yes, having modern toilets, running water, efficient waste disposal etc. actually increased the average lifespan of our society and prevented millions of deaths. Who would have thought? Ppl don't look for the meaning of the bigger picture because thinking requires energy and attention they would rather spend mocking him to feel superior. Now I don't agree with JP on many points, but I think one has to be extremely biased to deny his skills both in reasoning and communication. Dude is far more intelligent than the average person, that includes the people in this comment section as well as me.

@OGimouse1
@OGimouse1 2 жыл бұрын
They're a decreasing number of positions for more than a few reasons, one of them principally being that apprenticeships were traditionally unpaid (because by the time you pay off your supplies, etc. there is little or nothing to take home) and that the amount of time and "graduation" through the steps was in the sole and subjective discernment of whomever you were studying under. It's also a practice-driven line that is steeped little in education, so things like electricians not being aware of why the gages were the way they were led to a lot of house fires and electrocutions, and lawyers who could only fill out forms, and doctors who were just killing people, etc. It's a good system where it marries up with community colleges and licensing oversight, but otherwise it's Trump University of "do as I say, don't ask questions, the world will never change, and if you f### up it's your problem." The apprenticeship system--except for lawyers, AFAIK--not only carries no previous educational requirement but no future educational requirements. It's KZbin² without something more substantial. You don't necessarily need a masters or whatever for everything. But you need to be able to understand the difference in amperage in copper and gold, be able to calculate gage loads for different breaker boxes, etc. when it comes to electricity. You need to be able to understand that disposal of medical sharps carries a severe risk of disease and can create a public safety problem. You need to know why you don't burn cyanide-treated wood or the the tensile load of 15-pound rope not being that a length of rope can hold 15 pounds. I'd like to see apprenticeships come back but I'd like to see them be far less predatory and more based in education

Jordan Peterson: Seeking perpetual childhood is bad, and it's happening because of *personal* moral failings. This is basically what his argument boils down to. However, people's material conditions are sorta forcing this regression to happen. People have to fall into escapism because there's really nothing else they think they can do about it. So people start marking their entire personalities the things they consume, and identifying with those things who they are. An example being Disney Adults or MCU/DC fans, or really any other rabid fan base. The things people say we should have to be an "Adult" are out of our reach. We can't get well paying jobs without going into debt. We can't afford houses and have to either live with patents or roommates. We can't have children (if you choose to), because we're not financially secure enough to support them, let alone ourselves. This is just, old man screeches at young people for being poor, and telling us individual moral failings are the cause. Without any significant material analysis.
@danielshuck7586
@danielshuck7586 2 жыл бұрын
Even taking away the aspect of material conditions it's still a seriously stupid argument. Who gets to decide whether or not you're acting like a "perpetual child" or just enjoying things? What demarcates being an adult and a "perpetual child" anyway? Well, see, like everything Peterson talks about HE gets to decide and HE gets to draw that line. Not you. How dare you have more introspection than Peterson the Chief People-Understander.

I do want to point out that you can be a fan of many things without being rabid and many people pull that off. The loudest idiots will always drown out the more reasonable voices. That said, recreation can be an addiction just like anything else.
