HSM 1 is the OG. It's stupid silly, but stole everyone's heart. "We're All In This Together" feels good for the soul. HSM 2 is when they got a lot more money to spend of effects and clothes, and everything is really over the top. There is nothing of substance happening and people have *NO* communication skills. "I Don't Dance" is a certified banger tho. HSM 3 is the undeservedly forgotten sibling. It actually touches on some meaningful topics and the plot makes at least some sense when compared to its predecessors. The not-so-covert sexual innuendo when discussing "...the night of nights, // you know we're gonna do it right" is a juicy gem for when you rewatch it later. And kill me if you think I'm out of line, but "Scream" is the most iconic song out of the whole trilogy. Overall 10/10, actually rewatch every couple of years.

i feel like the craziest part about this movie is that it’s the expectation that high schooler do many activities in order to look more attractive to colleges??? like… troy doing basketball and musical theater would show a college that he has the discipline to learn multiple skills that take effort to be good at and the time management skills to fit both into his schedule?? literally things that show that your a dedicated student??? the same could be said for gabirella??? like just being smart isn’t enough to get into a good college you need extracurriculars????? i know it’s not that deep but it bothers me

Also, as someone who grew up in the '90s when cliques and subcultures were much, much stronger and less fluid than today, even then this was not at all how it worked. These are not the Jets and Sharks. They tried to force it into a strict Romeo and Juliet framing instead of doing something more original and sophisticated. Shar-Pei acted completely disgusted when the tall, handsome jock asked her out because he was the icky Other. That is not what would happen. And indeed she would be even _less_ likely to do that than the average theater kid, because she is specifically _not_ someone with a passion for it for its own sake, but rather a queen b type who wants to be a star as a power play, for the status and self-esteem. There would be no social pressures leading her to reject him.

a thesis for a masters degree just became famous in mexico because it is (roughly translated) titled "how sailor moon made me gay" and it actually talks about how it helped gay kids be comfortable and explore their sexuality im sure HSM did the same in the usa

We did an enormous HSM medley/excerpts my senior year concert, complete with the graduation gowns from HSM3 as well as the audition scene, and I got to play Kelsey. It's so funny looking back that I was So Quirky (and unpopular) that they cast me as the girl with no friends who sat on the OTHER SIDE OF THE STAGE FROM EVERYONE LOL. Thank you for doing this movie, it brought me so much joy to see your input. You should absolutely review the rest of the series

Only Gabi Belle can make me actually want to watch a 20 minute analyzation of High School musical, a movie that I’ve had an active avoidance to for years.

“Can’t take my eyes off of you” was in the DS high school musical rhythm game. I sometimes get that song stuck in my head, but I never could remember where it came from or why I knew it so well. You unlocked a memory lol

As a not theatre kid who stumbled into the theater department in college and became a theatre-college “kid” and now I have a career in theater (no, not acting, stage manager), I freaking love this movie at least the first one for its musical within a musical setup. Like I wasn’t a kid when this came out and my little sister is probably about your age and this came on and I was shocked how fun I found it. Like it knew the archetypes it was playing with and it just had such fun with them. And while one thing being your whole personality is….silly. It is also very teenager and wanting to just fit with a group. I also liked that the smart kids and athletes and drama club weren’t so much on a sliding popularity scale, they were just different camps of people into different things. Some of it was entirely cheesy, but in the best way. And I was an adult when this came out, okay…barely an adult but still not the target audience and I was walking around singing the songs. My saddness is that Zeke was written out after the first film 😢.

Troy Bolton is a fascinating cause he was raised with the belief that "Ball is life", but then he finds out that he's actually good at other things like singing and theater and whatnot. This then leads him to have an existential crisis bc like most cis het white guys, he was raised in an environment where you are expected find one thing you do and stick with it for the rest of your life and now he has two and legit altered his entire perception of life like its so funny.

At 30yo, I still really like Gabriella's sad solo and "Gotta Go My Own Way" in HSM2. I still listen to them on spotify. So dramatic considering the songs are about teenage love, but what is teenage love if not dramatic.

I mean, I also kinda forgot #3, but you HAVE to cover #2. PLEASSSEEE Fabulous will forever be ingrained in my brain as a non-ironic banger and Bet On It is unintentionally the funniest song/dance sequence disney ever made. NOT TO MENTION how Chad and Ryan swap clothes after I Don't Dance, a fact that my closet-ed pre-teen self obsessed over for an unhealthily long time...
