Women are often made to look after the emotional needs of their families, while simultaneously denying their own. Gabor Maté - who has decades of experience as a doctor working with mental illness, trauma, and addiction - says that’s having a very real physical effect on our bodies by way of autoimmune diseases.
In this chat, Fearne and Gabor discuss the relationship between mental stress and physical outcomes, as well as the way in which the political systems we live in are having a huge impact on our personal mental health.
The Myth Of Normal, the book that Gabor has written with his son Daniel, is available to buy now.
ABOUT HAPPY PLACE
Fearne's HAPPY PLACE is a place to celebrate honesty, authenticity and community. Fearne delves into life, love, loss and everything in-between by chatting to inspiring individuals who have made a change in their own lives or help other people to find different ways of seeing life as she reveals what happiness means to them.

I love my fellow physician and Hungarian descendant, but population density stress is the direct result of our living/dying in the stressor filled manmade "built" physical environment, cut off from nature, we were born into and it is killing us NOW! I, too, love his wonderful new book, "The Myth of Normal", but his understanding of stress physiology and its causative relationship to ALL of our modern "diseases of civilization" could be expanded, none of these diseases are found in traditional living Hunter-Gatherer/pastoral clans. I'm a retired psychiatrist and NEVER read a more important text for psychiatrists than Gabor's new book. I'm, also, a recovering alcoholic/addict/addictionist and Gabor's book is the single best reference for understanding addiction I've ever read! Thank you, both! Stress R Us

I just bought this book, 100 pages in and it is amazing. Dr Matè has wise words on trauma that have helped me in my journey to healing. Trauma is a wound caused by an event, therefore we can heal that wound. The event that caused the trauma will always be, we can't change it. But we can heal.

Curiosity opens the door for compassion. I know we're seeing clearly (and will continue to), but it's like a triage. We need to see it to heal it. Keep listening to your Inner Wisdom. Every other person has that same connection to their Soul. Just like you heard your call to Wholeness, they will too. This movement of healing is growing. You're part of that. I know it's not been easy, but every step you take on this path makes it easier for others. You're not alone. Your heart will heal and as it does, others do as well. Thank you for doing the hard work. I see you and I love you. Blessings 🙏 may you fully know the ever-present Love that you are 💖

Thank you so much Fearne for bringing Gabor to us all....... everything you have talked about resonates so much for me and my thoughts and experiences the last 10 years...... everything he talks about he articulates so well - the emotional turmoil we find ourselves in as a culture, as an individual.... the disconection, individualism, emphasis on success as individual achievement, and material things. Ayurvedic medicine says, "There's no pill for every ill, but there's an ill for every pill." - I am a testimony to that, having had to take drugs since I was 6 months old and the damage it has done to my body. Maybe, if someone had listened to me a bit more I wouldn't be in the mess my body is in now.

Such a brilliant podcast, well done Fearne. I love his work, Dr Gabor Mate, he is so refreshingly honest and right in so many ways on the aspects of our toxic of cultures, disconnected, more attention to one's health and your kids is key. The structures we have in society that does not serve us well, causing children and adults to stress, which can then develop to inflammation in the body mental illness or physical illness. Dr Mate gives such great words of wisdom and information backed up with studies carried out. I see this in my work, with treating clients using hypnotherapy, so many emotional wounds unhealed, and people feel lost on how to cope with emotional stress. Also I never knew we had in the UK a Minister for Loneliness, Tracey Crouch??

The coment about the children that spend allot of time with grand parents are healthier,is surely true 15 years ago ,but with the new spiritual war that is fragmenting community's and coming between familys, you cant go ahead adopting new idears if your cord is still connected to the old..grans and grandads.. Bit of a troubling time to navigate... Stay connected to nature and our inner voice that is telling us something isnt ok with the new worlds agenda..

Another wonderful, valuable presentation of healing and important healing ideas by Gabor Mate....and a capable, responsive, intelligent, and honest interviewer! I am struck by how Dr. Mate was having trouble breathing (kind of choking) during the interview (too many interviews? Something else?)....that is not getting dealt with by either of these people.. I love listening to Dr Mate. His work and insights into our emotional lives, particularly for traumatized people like myself. I just wish he would either stay in his lane re psychological issues, or when he criticizes our current capitalist unfair prejudiced culture I wish he could point out other countries or cultures that we can look to for guidance. I would like to think indigenous cultures are trauma free, discrimination free and live in this state of calm, and love. Has there been a past time with less trauma, or other non capitalist countries that have this resolved? Perhaps some of the more socialist Northern European countries, would be interesting to investigate their level of psychological trauma or not. The world’s population continues to grow, water is getting more scarce, but there’s less hunger. How do we get out of survival mode of living in this world? Any Big Idea solutions to our materialistic competitive world would be greatly appreciated as well.

. . .trying to think critically about this as a woman. In regard to your stats on MS, have you taken into account the increase in the number of women in the population in general? It looks like the population increase in the US increased about the same amount as the quoted increase in occurrence. Where are the actual stats coming from? Also, you believe that genetics aren't the answer, but what about the chromosomal differences between men and women? MS binds to the X chromosome - yes? This would occur at a higher level that genes right? Yes, women HAVE been more stressed since the 1930s depression-Era, but I'm not yet convinced it's caused MS yet. I do believe, and feel firsthand experience that extreme stress can create an environment for things like cancer or heart disease to flourish. Thank you for all of your insights. I hope that they've helped me understand and improve my overall quality of life.
