Gabor Maté on Ayahuasca, Trauma, and Rediscovering the True Self
What happens when we confront our deepest wounds? In this compelling conversation, Dr. Gabor Maté shares a deeply personal breakthrough during an ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon. Initially guiding the retreat, he was unexpectedly told by shamans that his own unresolved trauma was blocking the healing process. This led him to undergo five private ceremonies, where he experienced profound emotional release and a reconnection with his authentic self. His journey culminated in a vision of the Hungarian word for “happy,” symbolizing his liberation from past suffering and a newfound clarity about life beyond trauma.
Beyond his personal experience, Maté explores the broader implications of psychedelics in healing. He explains how substances like ayahuasca dissolve the boundary between the conscious and unconscious mind, allowing repressed emotions and the true self to emerge-similar to how dreams help us process deep-seated experiences. While not a cure-all, he emphasizes that psychedelics, when used with proper guidance, hold great potential for trauma healing and self-discovery.
🌟 What You’ll Discover:
🔹 Healing Through Ayahuasca: Dr. Maté’s personal transformation in the Amazon.
🔹 The Psychedelic Effect: How it temporarily dissolves mental barriers.
🔹 Trauma & Self-Discovery: Accessing repressed emotions for deep healing.
🔹 Beyond Psychedelics: The importance of integration and proper guidance.
✨ Highlights:
✔️ Gain insight into how psychedelics can aid in trauma recovery.
✔️ Explore the connection between unresolved emotions and healing.
✔️ Learn how reconnecting with the true self leads to lasting transformation.
🌿 Why Watch?
Dr. Gabor Maté’s reflections offer a profound perspective on healing and self-discovery. Whether you're curious about psychedelics, trauma recovery, or the mind-body connection, his insights provide valuable wisdom on the journey to wholeness.

I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and severe anxiety disorder, depression. I’m 50 years old and live with my 70 year old mother who has her own issues. So hard. So hard to heal around my mother. But lately I’ve been micro dosing with mushrooms. 1 gram. I am very sensitive to these, and you only need a gram. I feel so much better. It literally is lifting the fog I was in. I highly recommend this. My anxiety is much better. And my depression is gone. I also have recently switched to a 100% carnivore diet. So you won’t have the same experience if you take them more than 2 days in a row. I do them for 2 days. Then 3 off, then 2 on. So 4 doses a week. Take these early in the morning when you first wake up. 5am. On an empty stomach. Have your coffee or tea. Do some meditation. And then go for a walk in the early sunshine. I did all my healing through meditation on divine light in the heart. That brought my awareness of subconsious to conscousness and then I became a Sweatlodge Master in 1993. I have moved many people through their pain with wisdom. I found much wisdom in knowing that we are not to interfer with God and his creation. To trust nature and become identicle with nature. My dreams are phrophetic and show me the future as though we do create our own experiences. This is profound in many ways, but do we create our own traumas as a journey towards knowing the self to remember who we are. Yes we are spiritual beings having a human experience on a journey to return, but mostly to learn what we need to know before becoming multidimensional. Our dna was 24 strands that became 23 strand to learn and now many are changing back to the 24 dna strands to the multidimensional being that we now see as the great plan of God/Source. Galactic Center is the whirl pool of souls as we regenerate and also can move into other dimensions through out the Universe. I like your approach in wisdom as a natural, in forming and not clinically taught. Thx for being you.

"The unconscious floods into your awareness" - that might be why for people coming in with a relatively vulnerable landscape already, going on a multi-week ayahuasca retreat in the hope that it would be some sort of quick fix for their life-long trauma might be way too intense (some people take years to recover from the unwanted side effects, which can be highly destabilizing). Don't do this unless your life is working pretty well and you are at peace with yourself. Often people reporting benefits are therapists and people who have already done decades of successful small step stabilization work - or come in from place of having 1 hard thing in their lives that they are trying to heal from with a pretty solid foundation, not a background of decades of unhealed trauma and bad experiences in therapy where nothing has ever really "worked".

I believe Ayahuasca doesn't give you anything you can't handle. A friend of mine took it trying to heal some abuse trauma. At some point she remembered something about her bedroom, and she realized something had happened there. When she asked to be shown, the plant said, "You are not ready yet". It was creating an awareness that she could eventually go back to when ready. I also had an experience that showed me how for real Ayahuasca is. It was my 4th time doing it, I was very nervous and was fearing the "psychedelic show" that happens when you first go into it. At some point I thought it hadn't taken effect because I wasn't seeing any of it, then I closed my eyes and realized it was happening, but in black light, it was happening for real but not overwhelming me. I realized the plant was taking care of me.

@@kimbadull6448 Hi there, yes, for a few days leading up to the ceremony (ideally one week leading up to the ceremony) you should stick to a light diet - primarily fruits and vegetables. No pungent or spicy food, fermented food or overripe fruit. No alcohol and ideally no caffeine. This said, my first Aya teacher said that if giving up coffee even for a few days is likely to result in terrible withdrawal headaches, then it was better to keep the coffee. Oh yeah, and a person would have to be off SSRI (anti-depressant) medications for at least one year before a ceremony. Btw, not sure where you live but an Aya ceremony shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars even in the US.

I’ve carried a deep darkness for 74 years that I can’t clear with therapy or body work or meditation. Wish I had the resources to dive deeper with this kind of plant medicine. I think I will just have to take it back to the other side, that happiness and joy are not to be.

If you haven't already I would recommend Teal Swan, and her video on how to heal the emotional body. I say this because you said "I can't clear" the deep darkness.. Which might mean you're *trying* to clear something, rather than connect with it, accept it, sit in it, listen to it, learn its purpose / origins, offer it love and fully feel it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd assume those things are not something you'd say you've been fully allowing yourself to do towards that deep darkness you speak of. Otherwise it would probably be gone by now lol. In her video (among many others), she guides you and a gentleman through the process of: listening to your body/emotions, presencing them with acceptance, and unconditional love (allowing something to be exactly as it is without trying to change, transform, or get rid of it) towards any feelings, beliefs etc. And this has helped me tremendously in my body and emotional experience so far and opening my heart and other chakras as well. This is a timely process and does require alot of patience for oneself along the journey, however I do believe this kind of work will be life changing for many people. Hope this helps

i want to leave a comment here regarding the costs: i, coming from a western country with almost 0 experience in this field and a society that thinks shamans (taitas, because shamans is a word that does not suit latin american healers since its been used by westeners) was so worried about the costs and why in a retreat and i wanted to go into the jungle to meet a tribe and do it with them according to how it should be done. after my ceremony i was so glad that i was in a retreat that was meant for western people and not in a remote jungle. i think a lot of westeners need to be taken through these experiences step by step and with caution and respect to their culture, since it can be very overwhelming and even dangerious (i met people who were in ceremonies not held for westeners and guess who fell of a cliff and died. the western person). not to scare anyone or put the taita down, it was just a westener wanting to experiment with something and wanting it to be a certain way. these experiences can be both beautiful but als very rough in a beautiful and healing way and one should be cared for. they had to carry me back to my mat several times and stop me from eating sand. yes. so for me it was worth every penny. keep going on your path and dont think its a shortcut. the real work starts after.

There's nothing to "interpret" about my psychedelic experiences on psilocybin - everything is made as clear as possible. Perhaps ayahuasca is different. There's nothing to talk to anyone about. I get schooled for hours about the things I'm doing wrong, get walked through extremely vivid memories, occasionally I've had premonitions. The most powerful experiences. Integration is essential, but I'm very clear on what to integrate, and "entities" let me know how that process has gone when I return.

I am no expert and I could be terribly wrong, but in my experience I've come to find that there is darkness that can be absorbed from our environments (or simply observed), and there is also "darkness" that exists in all of us, which we can choose to integrate, suppress, stoke, or fight with. Is it possible to not judge yourself or your anger when it arises, and to show yourself love and compassion even in the midst of the darkest expression of your being? Maybe the anger you are experiencing is anger that first needs to be expressed before leaving you. Perhaps this is part of your healing and not at all "toxic". Either way, I hope you can be gentle with yourself, and extend unconditional love to the darkest parts of you...even in this very difficult stage of your healing. ❤

Sooner or later THIS includes us in it 'flat with the fact' Consciousness is dreaming the show called "reality," and that's all NOW can be! Freedom can't happen without that awareness! 'Happy' is only when we remember why we can never be who we imPERSONAte in THIS dream! NOW reflects how busy we, all the Characters, are using ego to defend the myth 'the self' will prove the dream has real people in it! That's the plot that runs the show called "reality!" When will 'the self' prove everyone is someone? That's the problem: it's not possible! We can count on suffering as long as we defend duality! Love reminds us we are ONE, and there are no 'real sides' to be on! Who is ever 'on the other side?' Sides don't exist, which means 'taking sides' can only be asinine in THIS charade!

I would appreciate if someone can explain to me, how come my firends and I took a lot of these teas, mescaline, acid, MDMA, the old ketamine (which I have a different theory about it) and we never have these kind of life meaning trips. Yes, during the 70s we talk about philosophy and pyshology and stuff like this but once the effect of the drugs was over, we understood that it was part of a trip. Obviously our view of reality was (is) different than the usual guy out there, but that's it. It makes me remember when people visit past lifes and they are never a slave in Egypt, o a no-one in the North Pole but someone with something interesting to tell...

Freud assumed that all dreams have the same function (bringing up the contents and narratives of the unconscious). But that's only one type of dream. Some dreams are expressions of physiology, and other dreams represent the future, usually butnot always in symbolic form. If you haven't had (or don't recall, which comes to the same thing) such pre-cognitive or prophetic dreams, the idea that the mind can (and very accurately, too) foresee the future may easily sound fantastic, imaginary. And yet it's something that happens quite naturally to some people, without the use of any psychedelics or alcohol, or whatever.
