It's so wholesome that you reminded people that it's okay to dislike or even hate parents. So often you'll hear "but they're you're mom/dad/family!" and... I just really wish people who say that could see the place of luck, love, privilege, or social conditioning they are coming from with that short-sighted sentiment. It's okay to be angry or no longer hold space for people just because they were part of the reason you exist.

I feel like for the Kidnap several things are happening at once: 1. the clown seems something made up/seen by Renya because he's coping with his mother and sister being gone 2. the man seems neurodivergent (which is why I feel for him) and he also used to go through abuse from his mother, which at some point he snapped and killed and shoved into the attic (which is why he seems to behave childishly, asking the children to play or obediently doing whatever Renya's sister tells him to do) 3. Renya's sister is definitely also severely traumatized and in denial about her mother, hence her behavior makes sense 4. you can tell from the diary entry that the man's mother used to abuse him because he looks a lot like his father + the child service ending makes me anxious, because I worry for what happened to the cat and the fish during those two weeks :(

yeah it's really upsetting that real kids actually have been and do get abused just because they look like the father or mother. I saw some case covered on a tv show once about a sweet little 2 year old boy who was terribly abused by his mother just because he looked like his father. she wouldn't let him eat and when someone at a party she brought him to noticed he was hungry and tried to give him food, she punished the kid for it. it had the worst outcome, it genuinely broke my heart. I just cannot even fathom abusing an entire child because OF THEIR FACE/AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PERSON, it's absolutely sickening

I had the exact opposite experience, actually. I went to school with visible signs and I would even exclaim to teachers and friends that "yeah sometimes my mom hits me", because I knew what she was doing wasn't okay and I was desperate for adults to save me. But I was mostly just met with "that's how moms are" so nothing ever came of it. Only when people told me "it happens", did I start feeling guilty and having imposter syndrome- seems that no matter what, the outcome remains relatively the same :( I'm so sorry to you and anyone else that sees this,, I would not wish childhood trauma on a soul; nobody deserves this. The sister is very interesting because she displays a very realistic sense of unconditional love despite the severe neglect and abuse. And on top of that, she also shows that her mother's attitude has turned her bitter and manipulative already, perhaps not quite yet to her little brother, but she admits to using the mister just like that. Ngl, this one hit close to home. Never been in quite this extreme a case, but neglect comes in many forms and knowing that a whole spectrum of situations are similar enough to resonate within people worldwide is a sad thought.

I feel like that clown scene was just a dream/nightmare by Renya because hes coping with the fact he is alone and is worried for his sister. In which he is dreaming of the clowns because its the talk of the town and everyone drilled it into his brain that the clowns were kidnapping people, so his logical dream is that the clowns took his sister.

such a good game and awesome play through as always gab~~. the "kidnapper" was the kid from the beginning of the game, who was a victim of abuse and violence and ended up killing his mother (whose body was hidden and latter became the ghost in the attic). In a way, I think it's interesting that in one of the endings the kids were "happier", safer and better with the "creepy villain" who took care of them than with their own mother who abandoned them without a second thought.

She is a child entrusted to care for another child. Its awful. And she knows if their mother was still there that she would take care of both of them better than she could, the way its meant to be.

There have been several cases of child abandonment like this in Japan. (I’m sure in many other places too, but I found a list of Japanese true crime Medium and there were several major cases involving multiple children.) Unfortunately, people just locking children away in an apartment and leaving them isn’t just a video game scenario. I won’t go into detail about them, but there are two where older siblings attempt to care for the younger siblings as best as they can.

There is an anime on Netflix in the US, and a manga series, called Kotaro Lives Alone. It is one of the first series I've seen that talks about things like the social services for kids, especially those without family. It seems almost a common manga or anime trope for kids to be surviving on own in Japan after something happens to the parents. Things do happen in every country, but it was weirdly normalized in some series. That anime, Kotaro, took me a bit to get into because the animation style was very different from what I'm used to, but OML. It will punch you in the gut with all the feels. I've known several people that have to watch it in small doses just because it does kind of hit hard. But it is very sweet and worth it.

.hack/sign is a good one. Talks about extreme case of abuse, neglect and showcases how you can overcome it by just finding the right place and right help. its an old mystery anime and early iseki style with the main protag who consciousness gets sucked into an mmo.. and lives there. They forget who they were but slowly pieced together their real life, their abuse, what lead them to making their character.. and actually meeting people who end up helping them out. it's a slow burn anime and showcases a lot of the differing reasons people pick up mmo, or use it as an escape.

I KNOOOOW! How can a friggin four yr old care for himself?! I'm in my mid thirties and I sometimes barely feed myself, granted I have a lot of health problems, but four seems absolutely insane. I watched a documentary on children's care homes in Japan and they are NOT good places. They aren't so much meant to find kids adoptive families, because in Japan culturally they just don't usually adopt, as much as they're there to feed them and give them somewhere to sleep, especially for the older kids because the babies, toddlers, and handicapped children require so much care, and there aren't enough care givers to give all of the children the attention they need.. Neglect and abuse, often the older teens abuse the younger ones, are prevalent. It's an incredibly sad situation. But the Japanese also raise their children differently than we do in the west. Japanese kids are expected to be pretty self sufficient by about age 7. They walk and take public transport to school all on their own, run errands, bathe, dress, and feed themselves, and they can often cook a few simple meals. I was making my own lunch by that age, but it was usually sandwiches and such. Nothing like complex bento.

I was also thinking of that anime. They even had a scene, where Kotaro meets some kids who look for food in the woods (I think) and it is later revealed, that the parents just left them and the older sibling had to care for the others. It's sweet, sometimes funny but it also punches you right in the feels.

I have something of a theory on this one i think. The mister is neurodivergent, and depending on the year this was in....he more than likely didn't receive proper care and was shunned. The page in the closet was from his mother, who was definitely abusing him. The only thing I can think of why she was upset that he looked like his father was because the father assaulted the mother, and thats how we got the mister. One day he just snaps and kills her, but due to his mental state he handles everything the way a child would (the messy cleanup, the state of the house being similar to sister and renya's house) He didn't mean to hit Renya when he was on the bike, that's more than likely his mom's van and he decided to try to drive but didn't know how. Now onto the sister...she's very severely traumatized from years and years of neglect(i don't think its the first time she left them alone judging by what she said), verbal abuse, and probably physical abuse as well. She convinced herself that her mother would suddenly turn into a good person and a hero if she found out her kids were missing. IMO the ending where the mister kills the mother should be the true ending. Renya smiles and is at peace. He won't have nightmares about murdering her anymore and I'm betting he's not wetting the bed anymore either. The sister will be traumatized but im betting will slowly realize (she seemed to be on that path at the orphanage) how terrible their mother was. This turned out to be quite the novel, thanks if you read!
@maddieb.4282
@maddieb.4282 Жыл бұрын
It’s wild that your theory involves murdering someone being the best result for all parties psychologically. People who kill an abuser are not generally magically healed from that even in the long term and it’s generally just additional severe trauma and complex feelings on top of what they were already going through. But then again video games don’t have to be realistic all the time

Honestly school uniforms were great. Of course, growing up I had the typical idea of just wanting to wear whatever I wanted instead of conforming to wearing uniforms but thinking back on it, it really did unify the students in a way since you could instantly tell which school the kids were from. And yes, the added advantage of not having to think about what to wear was pretty great in hindsight.

My older kids had school uniforms in elementary school, and I kind of loved it. They knew from Kindergarten on what was school clothes and what was play clothes, so getting ready in the mornings was faster. The clothes lasted longer. The uniform were mix and match sets instead of a single uniform, so you had a specific brand (which was over priced) and limited colors, so there was some variety for them. You could still sometimes still see who could afford new uniforms compared to second hand, but there wasn't brand names to deal with, or who could shop at better stores. My kids left the school before they got to the upper grades (the school itself went up to 8th grade at the time), but there was no arguing with teen girls about what clothes were school appropriate or not. Creative rationalizing why something should technically fit the school rules is part of being a teen, but they can find other things to flex their boundary pushing that won't make everyone late in the morning.

where i’m from, all schools (whether public or private, elementary or high school or university) required students to wear uniforms. i liked uniforms, been wearing since i started school at 3 until i graduated at 18. mostly because i don’t have to worry about which clothes i should wear everyday or what other people would think of me when i wear the same jeans or shirt, etc if we don’t have uniforms. it’s really cheap in my country too, either you can buy it, hand-me-down or have it sown by your mom or anyone in the family (which, if converted in USD, is priced $3-$10 at most). everyone can afford uniforms than clothes tbh, because not a lot of us own that many clothes. also, kids/teens are more likely to bully if we’re wearing regular clothes, it’s easier to tell which one is ‘less privileged’ by the way they dressed or which brands of clothes they’re wearing, while if you’re wearing uniforms, everyone is equal. also, our government was planning to stop requiring uniforms in school but everyone was against it because, like i said, clothes are much more expensive than uniforms and with uniforms, everyone is equal! :)

This is just a random thought- As a child who's only parent was my dad who raised my brother and I completely alone, I'd love to see more ads of single fathers and their children getting out of bad situations as well. Media often portrays the mother as the nurturer and the father as the absent/abusive/neglectful parent. Just like this game shows, it can often be the other way around or it can even be both. I think it's hard for some people to wrap their heads around a bad mother.

I'll be glad to support the cat shelter! Your video last year was so touching and made me cry. I wish there were more places, especially in the USA that would care for abuse victims kitties. Homeless shelters don't allow animals, so people who have to live in a shelter are SOL when it comes keeping their pets. They usually end up abandoned in the home (hoping a good samaritan will find them), on the street, or in animal shelters (and lots of them kill the animals if they don't get a new owner or are claimed by the previous owner within 30 days), and in the worst cases the pets are put down immediately. Given the major positive impacts pets have on people's lives and emotional well-being I think shelters should allow pets as long as they're up-to-date on their vaccinations, not ill, are properly cared for and cleaned up after, and stay in the person's room. Emotional support animals and service animals are the only exceptions to "no pets allowed" housing and a doctor has to provide documentation stating that the animal(s) are necessary sa or esa. This falls under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) non-discrimination laws. Unfortunately if a regular person is fleeing abuse there's no protection for their animals. Places like the ASPCA or Humane Society can sometimes ask one of the volunteers who foster and rehabilitate pets for them to foster their pets for awhile, but it all depends on circumstance and availability.

25:00 I grew up in a poor private school in the states. We had school uniforms. However style still existed depending on what uniforms you got. We couldn’t afford new ones so we always got whatever was the cheapest. So i wore giant shirts and shirts and it looked awful. The “cool” girl in my class knew how to roll their skirts just right and accessorize while I just looked like a potato sack. No matter where you go there is an element that will make you feel inadequate.

uniforms are difficult. as a small child, you can't really damage it (at least where i was learning) so it restricts your ability to run and play, especially if you wear a skirt. plus, the process of preparing a uniform and dressing was always tedious for me... though bringing up wealth made me think of it from a different angle. in our class a girl who was wealthier than the rest wore a different uniform which was specially made (her parents were against those at all, i'm pretty sure haha) so she stood out either way. i'm sure it helps kids feel more included though

Normally you wear shorts under a skirt so that there is no hassle and it's comfortable. In winter you wear tights under the skirt for warmth.And uniforms take the decision making out of the process, so you get ready faster. All you have to do is prepare everything the night before so you don't have to struggle in the morning ironing and making it look nice. Basically what parents tell most kids to do . I like uniforms, and never worry about what the others are wearing because I could buy and wear whatever I want outside of school.

I like uniforms! You don't have to worry abt what yo wear. This coming from someone who doesn't own a lot of cloths. Plus all the students wearing the same shit makes it easier for others having less fashionable or branded cloths to get along with rich fellows. Although rich students can still 'show' their richness in accordance to the way to wear their uniforms.

As someone who had to wear uniforms for work, I really think I would dislike having to wear a uniform in school. I loved that everyone had their own styles and when I was younger I didn't really care what anyone thought of what I wore. My father was very religious and strict so I couldn't really dress how I wanted to anyway, but I got aspects of the style I wanted for myself into my wardrobe. I wish I had more freedom though to really experiment with styles cause as an adult those stype opportunities went away because all my jobs had uniforms or really strict dress codes and there wasn't room to play with style anymore. I would work all day and go home and hop into pajamas. My style now is sweats and t shirts cause they're comfy, but I don't have a style now. I can't imagine going from not being allowed to have a style as a kid and being forced to wear very specific clothes and then becoming an adult and that pattern continuing. How would you ever be able to find a style then? That's just my experience though.
@maddieb.4282
@maddieb.4282 Жыл бұрын
Not having a “style” isn’t really a huge deal to some people and it’s definitely not a requirement as an adult. Not all of us feel like we need to express ourselves through clothes or we find comfort in predictability.

as someone who did wear a uniform during my school years, i'm glad i did. I went to a cheap but still private school (in Australia, private schools are pretty common) and had classmates that were middle to upper class. I came from a lower-middle class family, at the time my parents had a small bbq chicken takeaway, but my family was definitely frugal and i didn't understand the concept of "going shopping with friends" for a long time. If schools here in Australia (or at least in Sydney) didn't have a uniform, I think I would feel way way worse than I already did, being naturally awkward around people and being an introvert. Most of my clothes were out-of-fashion weird prints that were bought cheap from China, and I didn't start buying my own clothes until maybe year 10. I still remember the first shirt I ever bought for $5 at a Boxing Day sale. yeah. I'm really glad that my appearance for the most part during my school years, was at least one thing I never had to worry about. Kids were already brutal enough about other aspects - your personality, your way of talking, your food (me being ethnically Chinese, I had at times brought traditional chinese food to school). I think as an adult it's different with style being a form of self-expression, but as a kid you shouldn't need to worry about stuff like that and focus on other parts of life instead.

The man seemed like he was either mentally handicapped or autistic. Since the diary seems to allude to his mother abusing him it kinda makes sense that he snapped when their mother pushed him. I'm guessing that the body in the attic was the man's mother. He was willing to help the kids probably because they were in the same situation he had gone through. I think it's funny how many of us are worried about the digital cat and fish in a horror game, but I guess animal abuse or neglect is scary too...

The saddest part about this game is that it's so real. My seven siblings and I went through so much child abuse, that we're *still* coping with the PTSD and most of us are in our 30s now. To this day we're told, "But that's your mom! Your blood! You can't hate them!" Yes the fuck I can. I understand the mister and the kids. Sometimes you just snap. Sometimes you want to do anything possible to get a parent's love, even if it hurts your sibling(s). It's such a good game. I like watching you play the Chilla games though, because you make it too hilarious to even notice how sad it actually is 😂

41:13 kids getting left on their own is a thing people turn their gaze away from, particularly if they already feel stretched to the point of snapping apart in their own life. It's like turning your gaze away from a homeless person when you have nothing to give; too caught up in the performance of shame to even offer the social support of acknowledgement.

Regarding weirdness at school, I imagine it's kind of confusing because your normal is just normal until it isn't. Not nearly as bad as this, but IME, I accidentally worried my teachers, and usually it was just random weird comments about my general presentation, and I'd be nominated for at-school social programs, like a random food voucher, or whatever. Nobody ever explained why, or asked me any direct questions, so I was very confused and had no idea what was happening until I grew up and moved out! lol I can imagine it going on for a good while if they're quiet-type kids.

I went through this as a kid, only there was no food and they took all the money with them, so we didn't have anything to eat for almost a week. I still remember gathering coins I found around the house in couch cushions and such, getting just enough for one burrito at Taco Bell, then sharing it with my brother. That was the last thing we ate there. Our mother still to this day denies any of it ever happened, insists that she was the best mother, and anything bad that happened to us she considers someone else's fault or our fault. I can understand why he kept silent when he went back to school after his sister disappeared; when you go through abuse as a child, you are often encouraged and/or threatened to remain silent about things that occur in your home, especially if it is about something bad that happened.

Our mother still denies anything happened and I had to just cut ties with her to move forward in life and do what's best for my own kids. It has taught me to listen, especially to kids (their behavior, who they are comfortable or not around, and their concerns). It took a while to just learn to be content with accepting I will likely never get an apology or an explanation as to how or why it happened, forgive them, and just do what's best for myself. I feel for anyone who went through or is going through anything similar, and I hope they are in a better place as well.

I don't think the clown exists, I think he's just imagining things, because he's a child and he's scared, and people at school were talking about it. We see the clown only after his last friend goes home and he stays alone, then peeking into his room and he ignores it, as if he knew it was only a hallucination, and then we see the clown during the balloon sequence, after which Renya wakes up, so I guess it was a dream. The only time anything actually happens to him it when he sees the Mister in the wardrobe.

Hey Gab, I thought you might appreciate a teacher's point of view on this whole situation about neglected children.Yes, we do notice when some of our students are not doing well or are having a rough time at home BUT we can't do anything about it if the students won't talk to us. Most of the time, they will do anything to avoid suspicion and try their hardest to appear as ordinary as possible. This includes getting good grades, participating in class, being polite and agreeable because they do not want to attract any attention to them. However, if you do notice that something is bothering them and ask them about it, they often insist that everything's fine. And even if they open up about it, there is often nothing we can do. I had a student last year who fell asleep during my lessons a few times and I sat down with her after school. She finally told me her mother's depression had gotten really bad and she hadn't managed to get out of bed most days, so my student had been cooking, cleaning, doing the laundry and taking care of her little sister on top of school for a few weeks. Poor thing was only 17 years old and made me swear not to tell anybody because she was so afraid they would be taken away from their mother. Only thing I could do was ask my colleagues to extend that student's deadlines on all assignments until thing had calmed down. It broke my heart.
