All of my biggest Nuggets that iv'e found on the south Umpqua river in oregon were found in red clay right on top of bedrock. I had such a good feeling for you when i seen that red clay! Also my biggest one by far (14.8 grams) also had a big rusty chunk of iron by it that almost made me stop digging.
