I still find it amazing to think a 35-40-5 team with a rookie goalie and an aging LaFleur got THAT far at all in the playoffs.

Similar to 2021 when a lowly Habs team almost won the cup !

This series was an epic win for the Islanders, it really looked like that they were not going to pull this one out after being down 2-0

Nobody seems to be aware that nyi are winning their 19th consecutive playoff series. Perhaps the greatest feat in pro sports history

Adding that bossy was one of the best right wingers ever....trottier amazing 2,way center, potvin top 10 defenseman, all time...Billy Smith top playoff goalie all time. No team could have players like tonelli, Nystrom, Brett sutter.

The end of an era in two ways after this game. This would be Danny Gallivan's last Hockey Night in Canada Broadcast before retiring and it would be last series from 1980 to 1984 the Islanders win.

Guy Lafleur's last playoff game as a Canadien too.

Unfortunately it was a costly game for the Islanders. Bobby Nystrom and Dave Langevin both separated their shoulders and were out the first three games of the finals against Edmonton. Those injuries, combined with Bob Bourne tearing up ligaments in his right knee in the second game made it nearly impossible to beat the Oilers.

The story i heard about this series is that after game 2, the Islanders looked at all the available video on Penney and decided that his major weakness was on shots above his waist, so from game 3 onward, every chance an Islander player had the time to shoot, they went for the top corners.

I’ve heard this too.

Very true. That's exactly what they did. You would think Penney would have adjusted too.

It was due to Penneys eyesight

I think this performance by Penney put Patrick Roy in the driver's seat to take over in net. Islanders were SO beat up. Nystrom, Langevin, Bourne out and still were able to use Flatley and LaFontaine to try and patch some of the holes.
