Imagine how it will be with 29" RGB broadcast monitor and a pair of 150W (real, not PMPO BS) 3 way speakers (not at full volume of course). That was the first time i played that game, it still feels like it was yesterday, and it was almost 25 years ago. Funny part - this game has one of the best soundtracks on the system but speech samples are so distorted, that you can't understand anything. Road, rude? No! it's "blade"...

This format seems fine as it is, in regards to the rules. Each comparison seemed very fair and valid, and brought some cool discussion about what was available at the time. I'd love to see more.

If you wanna see a bad port of Space Harrier check out the ZX Spectrum version. In fact the ZX Spectrum could be an entire episode about awful ports.
@CarozQH
@CarozQH 7 жыл бұрын
How is that a bad port? The colour scheme is questionable, and it lacks music, sure, but it plays so much more smoothly than the Master System port, and it's about as fast as the Arcade version. And if you play it on an emulator, you can change the ugly colour palettes to something more eye-friendly.
@kosmosyche
@kosmosyche 7 жыл бұрын
+CarozQH And even the palette is not that bad. Gives it unique "speccy" feel. I'd choose speccy over master system any day.
@Nukle0n
@Nukle0n 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's fast but you can't see your character or the projectiles because they inherit the color of the background. Might as well be in black and white, would make it a lot easier.

You wanna see a bad port for that system? Look up for the ZX Spectrum port of Street Fighter II. Worst port I've ever seen in my life.
@Boogie_the_cat

Speccy just had the classic British Micro issue of games being so cheap in that country that even official Atari games were just some bedroom coder who was paid 15 quid for a feverish weekend of coding. Oh, and the color clash. And the scrolling. I'm sorry for anyone who owned a Speccy, because the games were so bad, stuff like James Pond 2+3 were "good" by comparison.

Game Sack, This was a really great episode! I like the idea of your battle episodes and it's nice to hear you're open for ideas. The idea came up when you put Shinobi against Ninja Gaiden. I felt the same way about Ninja Gaiden until I played Shinobi III and Shadow Dancer on the Genesis. I do like your approach to what makes a game a better choice (I.E. Space Harrier because of content, experiences/gameplay, etc. over the NES having smoother transitions). I hope to see more of these episodes, there are plenty of great comparisons/battles to be made. Especially, the 8, 16, 32 and 64-bit days. The rap in the middle of the episode was also phenomenal. You made me laugh my ass off at the end with the console battle! Cheers!

Ah, Rad Racer! Actually, my nostalgia is in the game's sequel, Rad Racer II, which has a number of improvements. For one, it adds a Rocket Start ability where, if you hold ⬇+A until your power meter is full, then release ⬇, you'll instantly take off at 255 KPH! Also, your dashboard now had a GPS that displayed when a turn was upcoming rather than using road signs, making it easier to prepare to turn. Lastly, crashes where a lot less dramatic. Instead of your car getting tossed around, you'd simply spin out. Also, instead of being respotted, you'd regain control of your car the spot you stopped on, costing you slightly less time, although it made it possible to crash into something else that happened to be in front of you. There were a few things taken out of of Rad Racer II, however. You could no longer change songs in the middle of a race. Also, the game only gave 2 music options: Gum Ball Crash and Coast To Coast. "Sing Yourself" is no music. (Unlike Rad Racer I, engine sounds and music can't play at the same time, but the music sounds better as a result.) Now, I discovered a while back that there actually _is_ a third music option, Still Alive, but it can't be accessed without a cheat device. I uploaded the track here along with the RAM address to change if you want to listen: tcrf.net/Rad_Racer_II As for a quick thought on Space Harrier and it's "Background Sprite" technique, I wonder why the Famicom version didn't use this trick? Sure, it looked smoother by having sprites, but they were less detailed and more sparse. Actually, several Master System used this trick to make larger animations than what could've been done with sprites, although it made things chopier and chunkier, as you mentioned. The Nes could do this in theory, but I can't think of any game that did. Lastly, Gradius III: From Legend to Myth. I played the arcade version, and it didn't have any slowdown that I recall. It also a 3D stage set from behind that the SNES version didn't have since even the mighty *Mode 7* wasn't powerful enough to handle the multiple scaling sprites it had. Anyway, the arcade version is much better. In fact, if the comparison was between the arcade versions of Gradius III and Thunder Force AC, it might've been tougher to call. As for the SNES version "Thunder Spirits", I don't know about that...

I have a suggestion guys. You should do an entire series vs another entire series like Contra vs Metal Slug. Take the three best games in a series against the three best games of another series. (ie for the example provided Contra, Contra 3 and Contra 4 vs Metal Slug, Metal Slug X and Metal Slug 3). Call it Sequel Wars or something. Also, it's okay to mix systems and generations as long as the games are the same genre. Personally, I would have gone R-type vs Gradius, but that's just me. LOVE what you did here though. You guys are great. I'm a sack for life!

It would be so cool if we had a 16 or 32 but Rad Racer. I remember counting the days down in school, waiting for that game to come out. I was so excited that I could drive the Ferrari and in 3D even!! The 3D stunk but the game ruled and I played that game every day after school for weeks after getting it. Ahh the memories.

Who's actually the composer of World Runner?
@kosmosyche

Nobuo Uematsu. You may know him as the composer of most games (at least, all the classic ones) in the Final Fantasy series.

Hironubu Sakaguchi. Same composer of Rad Racer (and Final Fantasy)

Yeah World Runner is one of those weird games that Square made before they hit it big with Final Fantasy I'm amused that they recently made a mobile game remake of/sequel to their rather awful NES game King's Knight, and the characters in Final Fantasy XV occasionally mention it

I like this current format. The games you are pitting up against each other actually make sense. Classic Game Room did random game battles and although it was funny, it just couldn't keep me interested.

I disagree with Space Harrier winning. Sure, the arcade version blows Worldrunner out of the water, but the Master System version is a garbled mess. Everything on the screen looks like something went terribly wrong with your cartridge. It's practically unplayable.

It's perfectly playable because, while it's a low framerate game, it's fully stable (about 15 FPS I'd say, but rock-solid 15 FPS) and the controls are responsive. Anyone who played computer games from the era was used to games with low framerate -- something really common back then. I also, like Joe, love Space Harrier on the Master System -- and I mean I love to play because of how good the gameplay is. You just have to be used to low framerate games -- really, again, at the time it was a normal thing on games and we the players just had to "sync up" to the screen.

I just played a couple of levels of both games back-to-back. Okay, so maybe Space Harrier on Master System is passable as long as there's not too many enemies on screen and nothing is shooting at you. But the second a boss shows up, or a swarm of enemies start shooting, it becomes nearly impossible to even tell what you're looking at. Worldrunner, on the other hand, is buttery smooth and nothing ever clutters the screen with blocky garbage. Space Harrier wins in the music department, because that theme song is one of the all-time classics, but Worldrunner is better in every other aspect. Space Harrier is just too messed up...It's trying too hard to do things that the Master System just couldn't handle. Worldrunner, on the other hand, knew its limitations, and came out the better game.

You're judging it with modern-gaming eyes. Nobody back in the 8-bit days thought it was garbled or unplayable. Most people thought the graphics were amazing. And for the time they were. It's certainly not unplayable. You just need to practice.

> it becomes nearly impossible to even tell what you're looking at It's kind of a gameplay feature (really!) of Space Harrier (any version), After Burner or almost any Sega sprite-scaling shooter of that time. I'm serious: if there isn't moments where it's nearly impossible to even tell what you're looking at, it's not a good Space Harrier, After Burner, Thunder Blade, etc... After Burner Climax, for instance, it's full of those moments! And it's on glorious 60 FPS on Xbox 360 or arcades.

I love Space Harrier and Afterburner and all those super-scaler Sega arcade games. But let's be honest...The Master System ports are all terrible.

Really enjoyed this episodes guys. Would love to see more like this. 16 bit game wars are more interesting than 8 bit since the NES dominates 8 bit for the most part. 32 bit game wars would be really cool also. -TMNT Hyperstone Heist genesis vs TMNT Turtles in Time snes -Contra Hard Corps genesis vs Contra 3: Alien Wars snes -Phantasy Star 4 Genesis Vs. Final Fantasy 2/4 Snes -lots of 32 bit options........

Actually, Square DID produce a sequel to Rad Racer on the Playstation 1. It was a little different, though, since you only controlled some blonde spikey haired guy on a motorcycle with a huge sword. You also had to go through like 8 hours of running around before the race started. And they renamed the series to Rad Fantasy or something.
