if you wanna save your fingers Dremeling tiny pieces you can use a pencil with eraser end on the part for grip. Works pretty well

Good way to clean the cartridge slot on most consoles. Pull a cloth tightly over a bank/debit/credit card, dip it in IPA, and slide the card in and out of the slot. You can even stuff the cloth into the slot with the card, then pull it out slowly

Great video! just an advice... i found out moding some cases that when i need to remove just a little bit of plastic from the side or make a hole for a new port, jewelry files work like a charm instead of using a dremel, it also leaves a nice finish.

To get the touch sensor to work you need to use a reproduction IR Filter, I'm not sure if they never tested it with an official one but the 3rd party ones seem to be lower quality and the sensor will work as expected

Okay, now the proper comment: Basically just looking at the attacher connector with a few chips on it made me think, that this IPS screen basically recieves RGB signal that is converted from the one output by the Gameboy. So regarding my previous comment - probably not an easy way to achieve the video output from the Gameboy :( I happened to read that somebody did a mod like this with Atari Lynx, but was using the Mcwill mod, where the screen outputs additional VGA signal. By the way what are your thoughts about Lynx ? I always thought this console is heavily underrated, even more than Game Gear nowadays. Despite the huge size, and heavy battery consuming this baby could do in 1989 what Gameboy Color could do in 1998. Thats a huge gap imo.

@@hderijk3187 A little kapton tape on the side of the sensor that is closest to the IR LEDs will correct the touch sensor issues.

Just a suggestion the sensor might work light like a solar panel so if you cover the side that goes inside the gameboy with black tape to block the light from the side when you touch the outward facing side it might work when you cover it with your finger just like others are saying in the chat i didn’t get the notification of your video I found it on the home section

He is also proof that you should read instructions. Because on some IPS mods you need to hold a certain direction on the D pad or the a b button to change color or brightness of the screen unsoldering the touch sensor without reading the instructions first is something that you shouldn't do in a video on how to do a mod. All it is showing is that it is ok to give up and destroy a expensive product he should have just figured out what to do after the video or stop recording until he found out what to do.

That sensor you removed at the end seems to me to be more of an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the brightness?

It's supposed to be touch sensitive, not sure if i messed something up, or it just doesn't work well

@@RetroRepairs @31:58 it sort of looks like it slowly cycles through the levels if you hold your finger on it for an extended time rather than a quick tap, but it's hard to say. Regardless, great install video and showcase of this mod! Edit: Hmm, seems to work with taps @33:32 unfortunate problem. Maybe one of the recommended fixes in the comments will work for you. @@RetroRepairs is it possible that the sensor i touching the metal screen frame, therefore not working properly? I have both IPS and the smaller screen mods with touch sensors and both work fine, but I opted to put the sensor somewhere else to not obscure IR window.

This one has the same display size as the original screen (as you can use the original lens, contrary to old mods when you had to use a custom mod because the display size of the screen was a bit smaller).

The problem with the touch sensor is that you are touching near the antenna, it would be like continuously holding your finger on your smartphone and expecting the it to still be responsive. It was working fine, you just didn't understand how.

I also got some problems with the touch sensor. Had to remove it several times and after a while, it completely stopped working (I guess it's pretty fragile and can be easily broken). Not a problem as I wasn't planning to use it personally, but I left it, I didn't desolder it. I even removed (cut) the IR leds because I thought it might be the problem but it changed nothing.

Have you had a look at the BennVenn screen mods? I have done a few backlit miss for GBCs, including the old one with the ags-101 screen, and his freckle shack screen was by far the easiest. IIRC it was also cheaper

I didn't care for it, as it's smaller than the original screen. If you don't use a modified lens, you'll see the edge around the display.

Yo! Great video and very informative - I was about to just order a screen and didn't know you'd need flush cutters, kapton tape, or extra adhesive. However, I'm having a lot of trouble finding that 3M 9448A Double Coated Tissue Tape for purchase, all the other double-sided tapes I'm looking at are too thick (3M's site says their 9448A is only 0.15mm thick). Do you by chance have a link or store I could check for the exact type of adhesive you used? Thanks!

There is, but these are mass produced displays, so much cheaper. Manufacturing a screen with the same aspect ratio/resolution as the original would be much more expensive. For example, McWill screens for the Game Gear are $120, these are $50

My crystal cartridge no longer works... it looks like it was badly oxidized and the memory battery fell off. Is that repairable?

Hard to say without seeing a picture. It might be, depends how bad the damage is. Sounds like some liquid damage, so might be fixable with a good cleaning and reflowing solder as long as the components havent been eaten away

It's not ideal. Electrical tape tends to disintegrate over time and just turn into a gooey mess. But since the point was to insulate the ribbon from contacting the board, it could work.

Nice, enjoy. Kapton tape is useful to have, not only can it insulate like I'm using it for, but it's heat resistant so if you're soldering or using hot air, it can be used to help shield other components from excess heat.

You can still remove the lens, just use a sharp tool, and you can easily lift the lens. If you don't stick the screen with tape, it'll be far easier to remove it whenever you need to.

That's a pain. Might just be a poor design. I like the GBA version, you hold SEL then use the L or R bumpers to adjust up and down.

50 buck for the mod where you do a ton of work? forget that, I'll get a psp and mod that. I then can play anything from 1st gen to ps1 games. And if you're lucky you can get a set for 30 bucks as I did. Or even at 50+ it's a steal.
