This is a great series. Doran is such an enigmatic character. The missions he comes up with are so screwed up I remember thinking when I first read the books that this guy is the poorest strategist in the books. You make such a strong case that if the books don’t prove you right then GRRM missed a hell of a story.

Aww, always leaving me wanting more! Wow, yes I think the Martells has some other weird alliances w/Essos over Westeros too, now that you bring the geography and the slave ties into it and the fact that they never get raided. Hmm, Doran must be more powerful than we all know, w/very strong connections to other powerful people. I still don't see who they could know for sure about Joffrey's murder and it leading to a trial by combat though, as as we saw, Tyrion could've gotten out of it if he just confessed and got sent to the wall. It all changed on a whim, after Tryion decided he wasn't going to let his father get what he wanted anymore. All htese players would have to be top psychologists to forsee what would happen and be right all of the time as I'm not sure what their backup plan would've been if Tyrion didn't call for that. Maybe they were behind Shea's confession that took Tyrion over the edge? He was supposed to ship her off to Essos, so depending on the ship, etc., but Doran got word of who she was and decided to use her? IDK, just still seems pretty far fetched. But it does seem they planned to at least try to kill the Mountain when Oberyn left for KL and yes, it wouldn't make sense unless they knew a way to get the Mtn there.

Oh guys I missed you so much. You guys don't know how much I have thought about oberyn already coming with the plan to kill the mountain. The only theory that was out was Preston's idea that oberyn came to kill twyin, which is fine, maybe it's true, but my problem with that is that if twyin died without confessing then it would not be complete. So I like this better, the only think I have problem with is the slave thing because I don't think it would be such a secret, but I can roll with it. Missed you so much! I hope you come back soon!

we think the Martells are pretty much the only ones that know about the slaving...we think they use their influence/control of the pirate slavers on the Stepstones as a means of "keeping their hands clean"

So my problem with that is what if Doran dies and leaves his family suddenly poor because they don't know? Also, I don't think his shield wouldn't know since he is with Doran all the time and he thinks they are poor, I agree with you something in the clothes of the girls is way off and slaving is a possibility but who is Doran running it with is my question! Who else in dorne knows this and asist Doran with it?

I never know how much of this I can actually believe. What I do know however is, that if it were to come true like this It would be awesome. Also if it were any other author but GRRM I'd probably think you know more about this world than the author himself. With GRRM however I can actually believe that he really planned every detail (every WORD spoken) in such meticulus detail. That makes it so awesome to see these videos - because it could actually all be true.

you guys are awesome keep up the good work, you've managed to make Dorn interesting lol even book Dorn I could never get into it, was just introduced too late into the series and too few chapters (same with Iron Born). However as cool of a twist on Doran as this is, a side of me is saying that what you guys are using as your bedrock to build on were his children's thinking to themselves similar thoughts (they'd rather suffer some shitty way to die than disappoint their father), I think it's more realistic those were just a way to show how much their father means to them "I'd die before I disappoint my father by failing this mission" I don't think is to be taken 100% literally, it's just a figure of speech. I think that's more thank likely the scenario with most of these things and they aren't as complex and elaborate behind the scenes, but it's still fun to hypothesize with this stuff and you guys are great at finding original ideas still, in this long night of a wait with all the countless channels that just re-hash the same theories.

Isn‘t it super weird how when speaking to Tyrion Oberyn states that he will make the Mountain tell him who gave him the order but then during the actual fight he *never* brings this up? I mean shouldn‘t implicating Tywin be the top priority here? Or did he just get too caught up in the moment and forget about it?

The way Oberyn questioned Gregor just seems so redundant. Asking „Who gave you the order to kill my sister?“ would have accomplished both in one. I guess Oberyn was just *that* sure that he would win?

My impression of Doran is that he is shrewd, cautious, intelligence, capable of being ruthless but in Dorne he is mostly known for being weak and indecisive. He is getting older, is stricken with gout and likely wont last much longer maybe he has a few years left by the time we first see him in AFFC. For a long time he worked in partnership with Oberyn. Oberyn was everything he was not. He alludes to this saying he was the grass that the snake Oberyn hid amongst. Losing Oberyn was a great blow to him personally, it weakened his rule and the manner of his death increased the sentiment for war within Dorne. At the same time his own illness and perceived weakness meant that his heirs, at least the two oldest, neither of whom were competent to be co-rulers like Oberyn, were a threat to him. He got rid of Quentyn by sending him on his long shot dragon mission. His relation with the Yroonwods did make Quentyn the more dangerous of the two. However as we find out even Arrianne was able to puzzle out that Quentyn went to Essos. This was a result of his own incompetence. Like Arrianne pointed out he should've gone to Oldtown and left from there if he wanted secrecy. It raises questions about who else knew of this trip. Whether the attack that killed half of Quentyns party was deliberate or just coincidental. This attack killed the Maester who in some ways was the leader of the expedition. Who also might have been under secret orders from the CItadel to poison Dany and her dragons. It also eliminated the Yroonwood heir, who could've been a potential rival to Quentyn for Dany's hand. Meanwhile Arrianne was allowed to go ahead with her stupid plan that seemed to involve no one of note. Doran took the more capable Sand Snakes out of the picture early on. I think that Darkstar was the only one of them who held any lands. In any event he had a spy planted in her inner circle maybe more than one. Whether he secretly ordered the murder attempt on Myrcella is unknown. He later seems to insinuate that the murder of Myrcella would've started a war but it seems likely that it would've taken years for the Iron Throne to turn its attentions to Dorne and he threw the whole thing off on this rebellious knight/house Darkstar of house Dayne. When Oberyn went to Kings Landing he brought a collection of the greatest house of Dorne with him. Tyrion saw a message there, one he did not like. Still some house were absent, Dayne, Fowler, and Yroonwood. It does seem like Doran overstates his case about a war breaking out over Myrcella, even if she had died. The crown still had to deal with Stannis, the Ironborn and other remanants of the war, plus winter was coming. Dornes armies were fresh and the crowns were exhausted. Now here we get to Arrianne his heir. As we can see he had little faith in her. He disapproved of her lovers and her friendship with the Sand Snakes as well as with Sylva and the Orphans. He used a marriage pact that no one besides he and Oberyn knew about, not even Arriane knew as an excuse to marry her off to someone acceptable. Though there were many lords inside and outside of Dorne who were acceptable. He finds out when questioning her that she found the letter to Quentyn when she was 14, which he suspected, but that instead of confronting him about it at the time, which is what he wanted, she kept it to her self, used it as an excuse to plot against her own Father. He was slightly impressed that she puzzled out Quentyn going to Essos. All though its possible that it was a double lie and that he himself arranged for her to find this out. She feels that Doran needs her to influence Myrcella and the story that she will tell. He goes along with this but we know its not true. He had all ready passed along information to Kings Landing that people close to Arrianne had been arrested. He had another story planned if Arrianne had not cooperated. In the short term he gets her on board and loyal to him for what its worth and its not worth much. The marriage with Viserys was more or less called off because both of them were incapable of handling such a sensitive plan. Then you have the GC coming to put Aegon on the Throne. The news that the GC broke their contract with Myr is circulating everywhere in AFFC. Doran being smarter than most knows that it is likely related to the debt that the crown owes to the Iron Bank. He is expecting some kind intervention from Essos led by someone who would have a valid claim. Even Jon Snow at the Wall knows and supposedly he know nothing, that when rulers fail to pay their debts to the bank, new claimants spring out of thin air to take their place. It would be interesting if Jon had actually sited examples, it might shed some light on recent history. Doran might not have expected this claimant to be someone claiming to be his nephew. Maybe Arrianne seems over her head but she is maybe capable of seducing Aegon, she can fuck. Once again no one of importance is sent with her. If the mission fails or is uncovered he can disavow it and say Arrianne acted on her own. As it is the invasion by the GC is too important for him to ignore as well as the increase of pirate activity in the Stepstones. He sees this as being related to the Iron Bank crisis and Arrianne is being sent as half a hostage half an ally or marriage prospect depending on the outcome. Meanwhile Trystane is ensconced at Sunspear protected by centralized power of house Martell. The older Sand Snakes are sent on dangerous missions outside of Dorne for the most part. The younger ones are scattered across Dorne. So that's Dorans situation. He has sent Quentyn on a mission, that if it fails, he can try and throw off as a Yroonwood plot against him. Arrianne is another disloyal heir, who first tried to crown Myrcella and then when he pardoned her went off with this Targ pretender. The Sand Snakes who could be a threat have been sent away. Meanwhile he has Trystane perhaps his best heir, which isn't saying much, safe. His goal seems to be to have a foot in every camp and a plausible excuse for doing so. Meanwhile he is trying to preserve the survival of his house and their continued rule. Vengance against the Lannisters has been completed for the most part but it cost Oberyn his life and came at a high price in that regard. Dorans position is precarious. He can't have the Lannisters continue to hold the throne. Tommen or Myrcella might seek vengeance themselves one day. Still this is more of a long term thing and the Iron Bank might take care of this for him. Now as far as the plot against Joffrey. It seems like everyone who was a top tier player knew that Joffrey wasn't going to last, that he would be bumped off. The question was whether it would look like an accident or a murder. If it was a murder who would be blamed. Sansa and her husband Tyrion were blamed because they were the easiest and least important. Oberyn was mildly surprised, it might well have been him for a number of reasons. Now at this point I don't think Tywin is very much happy or in control of things. The Dornish had a hostage. Tywin interestingly wanted Jaimie to marry Margery after Joff was killed and have him take Tommen to Casterly Rock to foster him. He wanted Cersei to marry as well preferably to Wilas. Still you have to wonder if he wasn't thinking of putting Myrcella on the Thorne to head off the Dornish doing this. Going after Oberyn for the poisoning would have been tricky and maybe what Oberybn would have wanted. The disappearance of Sansa as well as Cersei blaming Tyrion right off the bat hemmed in Tywin. The trial was heading for an outcome Tywin never wanted. His children were disobedient and refused the marriages he suggested. It would have been better for Tywin if Joffs death appeared to be accidental. Tywin was losing control then he was murdered by the actions, direct and indirect, of his own children and grandchildren. The goal of the Tyrells/Petyr was to get a better match for Margery and to set the Lannisters and Martells against each other. Tywin saw this, I'm not sure if he puzzled out Petyrs role but there was nothing he could do about it. I think Petyr is as much of a friend to Doran as he was to Ned Stark. He will work or betray them as it suits his purposes. They are also playing the same game he is. Stay out of the war, keep your armies fresh and your granaries full. I think he wants to see them commit to a side before he does. As far as the economy of Dorne goes. I doubt they are directly involved in it. Its more likely that they are indirectly involved and that they trade such goods as salted meats, clothing and whatnot so that these cities can feed and house their slaves. They do have exports like wine, olive oil, citrus fruits. They are also in a good spot to be a trade middle man. As Rhoynar they are a part of this diaspora that spans a very large area. The true history of the Rhoynar, how they partially left Essos, some stayed behind is unclear. What is more likely is that they split up their fleet part of it went to Southyros, some tried the Summer Isles and some went to Dorne. I think there is an informal network of Rhoynish traders in the Southern seas. Dorne and Sunspear sit at the heart of this and this is where the Martells get their wealth.

There are too many holes in his Targaryen restoration plot to even be legitimate because if he was truly out to put the turkey in back on the throne Heat have done a lot more for viserys and Daenerys both. And it's not like varys was watching him specifically, there's so much Doran can get away with without varys ever knowing

Oberyn said he wanted justice but Ellaria knew he wanted vengeance. Ned talked about the difference of vengeance and justice before I think it was when they first learned Mountain raiding Riverlands and someone suggested they should do the same to Clegane's keep? So Martells losing because they put vengeance before justice

Y'all are great. GRRM wants to surprise the reader, so it makes sense that he'd write an awful character in a deceptively good light. And also, I had a different take on Oberyns visit to Kings Landing. I agree that Doran and Oberyn knew he would fight the mountain, though I'd say made a good calculation unless we're getting into tinfoil territory. I did a little reasearch about this twist thing and here's what i got. George hinted at the twist before the season five aired: "This is going to drive your readers crazy,” he teases, “but I love it. I’m still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It’s a great twist. It’s easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters. They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it’s just being shocking for being shocking. But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen. And with the various three, four characters involved… it all makes sense. But it’s nothing I’ve ever thought of before. And it’s nothing they can do in the show, because the show has already-on this particular character-made a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions.” (www.ew.com/article/2015/04/03/george-rr-martin-winds-date/) Note that here he doesn't state that the character is dead, only that the showrunner's version of the character made this twist impossible. One year later he confirmed the twist (before season 6 aired), stating that the character is dead on the show. So it involves a long term character that dies in the show on season 5. I believe this helps to narrow it down. Mance and Stannis both die in season 5, but there are other important characters that are killed in this season: Barristan, Hizadar and Myrcella could also be contenders to this twist. George say that it involves three or four characters, and also it has to grow out of situations. At the time George confirmed it he said that only the main character in the twist was dead in the show, so that made me lower the expectations on Stannis and Mance, only because i thought that they we're probably working together and both of them are dead. It made me think more seriously about Barristan. He was killed in the show mainly to give room for Tyrion as a political adviser to Daenerys (a role barristan has to perform, most of the time unwillingly, on the books). And now he's on a hard place with Daenerys away, her dragons loose and with a war at the city gates. Could it be that he will betray her in some manner? Cuz that would be a twist.

Emilio Camacho Erice hahahah, to be honest I am a N+A=J supporter, but I've learned from my past mistakes, which is Star Wars The Last Jedi, just because you truly believe a theory is true, doesn't make it true, and if you attach your love for ASOIAF with your favorite theory, you'll most likely be disappointed if it isn't true. That happened with me and a whole lot of others with TLJ, all though it had many other problems. But now I just take every theory with a grain of salt. I mean I like a lot of Preston Jacob's theories but the contradict with the theories on this channel, so I just don't assume anything to be true, unless GRRM confirms it. For the R+L=J thing, it was my first theory that i had heard of and I believed it but what swayed me over to the N+A=J side is the fact that Jon being Rhaegar's son doesn't mean anything at all, he is the rightful king so what he's never even been to the south, him being Lord of Winterfell (or King in the North) would mean so much to him, also him being Sword of the morning would be fucking awesome, and than using Dawn to win the war for mankind, I mean who else would wield Dawn if not for Jon, somebody has to, because why would you have this awesome legendary sword in your story but have nobody wield it, but yeah that's my take on it, we'll just have to wait to see what George's take is

May or may not be related. I have a couple ideas but I'd like a second opinion on a question that's bugged me forever. Unfortunately I doubt anyone would want to give a definitive answer. Do we all agree Jorah was fairly accurate in his view that the Dothraki are practically useless against a walled castle because they have no patience for siege warfare? How did they win against Sarnor or Ibbish when all their cities are walled? Keeping in mind the belief they don't build engines, and they can't stand just sitting around waiting. Certainly their farmers might have been easy to kill, but only until they realized walls kept them safe. Then they'd build walled retreats or farms. Dothraki could certainly join into a single war band. But after a week of riding circles around a walled city why would they have remained? Something about the Dothraki doesn't add up. They don't farm food or animals besides horses, and they use horses for food. Everything they have is stolen or kidnapped. Why would anyone settle anywhere near them. If all the cities are walled, why do they fear them? As best I understand it from the text. The Dothraki spend most of their time forming into a dozen or more war bands. They mostly wander around the grass sea in some sort of migration pattern making food of grass and stealing from each other. Sometimes some one really dumb leads people to settle a small town on the grassland. Every so many years each Khal does his rounds attacking certain places that have been saving up in preparation for them. They accept these gifts and drop them off with the widows club in Vaes Dothrak. The dothraki demand all travelers carry a gift of silver and seed for the widows. And again, they dont farm so seed is useless, and they dont understand buying so the silver is useless. This doesn't make sense, and it's not sustainable. They don't care about money because they don't "understand buying." Almost all their slaves would have to be Dothraki. If they aren't then they must be gifts from the cities. So please, seriously, correct me if I'm wrong. The free cities collect valuable materials, and must segregate a portion of their community until a Khal comes to collect them. These items are then carried by them to the slave cities of Ghis or the Dosh Khaleen. We have no idea yet what the Dosh Khaleen do, but the Ghis accept the slaves for more gifts. These slaves are then trained and sold to Volantis and the other free cities. This looks remarkably like an elaborate tax collection system. On the surface you might say that Westeros seems to be exempt from this. For some reason you never hear about a ship from Essos landing and stealing villages for slaves. However, the wall segregates a segment of the westeros population and neither the north nor kingslanding does anything to enforce the law of not selling or having slaves if the activity happens north of the wall. The wall of volantis are manned by mostly slaves. The wall in the north is manned by mostly criminals which might as well be slaves as if they leave their post they die like a slave. Curiously as well there are people that land on Westeros and Kidnap people and steal material wealth. The Iron Born. Please, is it just me or does it not look like the world is set up to pay taxes to some where? It even looks like the Jogos collect taxes from Yi Ti. Am I imagining it? Reading too deep? allyria stark Indeed, you're probably correct. That specific instance however I have a very different theory for. Your version is far more likely than my own. I really like the theory that Mance is Arthur Dayne. It's makes a lot of sense. I believe Mance is a different character however. First, consider Lyanna Stark's personality and skill set. Her father may have quietly agreed, but certainly publicly would not have allowed his daughter to fight. If there was one person who would have supported Lyanna and helped her it was her brother Brandon. How could he do this and make it as safe for her as possible? As a squire. Spending all the time she did with him in the Rills and Burrowlands, I believe Lyanna was Ethan Glover, Brandon's squire. Identifying Ethan as Lyanna would allow us to answer another question. Who was the unnamed female Glover married to Jorah before Lynesse. Right, I believe it was Lyanna. Which answers the question, why is Lyanna Mormont named after her? It would also help us to understand why Jeor Mormont would insist of giving Longclaw to Jon. Because Jon is the head of house Mormont and house Stark. It might have been brief, but once his dad burned Brandon was the head of the house. Correct or not about Lyanna she was still alive and Ned may not have wanted to take the seat. This is why all three statues are in the crypts. The fact her statue is in the crypts means she was, which means Jon as her son is the heir and Eddard was acting as regent for him as he was a baby. Now, if this is true, Ethan was spared by Aerys because Aerys discovered the truth or Varys, or Pycelle. One of the three ensured a girl would not be murdered. That's how he survived. Now, this presents a problem for us. If Ethan was Lyanna, she couldn't have been kidnapped and raped by Rhaegar. Robert doesn't seem to be aware Lyanna was ever married to some one else and genuinely seems to believe she was violated by Rhaegar. So, it would seem he may not have been a part of the lie. What I believe to be more interesting however is, it may not have been Lyanna, but if it wasn't her and the events took place much as people believe, was there some one kidnapped and if so who? If Lyanna Stark was giving birth or dying doing so, and the kingsguard were aware Aerys and Rhaegar were dead, why in the name of the old gods and the new would Gerald, Oswell, and Arthur stop her little brother from seeing her. That scene makes no sense if Lyanna is in that tower (Unless you want to go super tinfoil and believe Rhaegar was up there and Eddard wanted to kill him.) That scene only makes sense if they are protecting a Targaryan or if Arthur is keeping some one from Ned. So, this leaves 3 people, either Dany was being born in the tower of Joy to Rhaella, Dany was being born to Elia Martell after Lewyn and Arthur helped her escape, or Dany was being born to Ashara Dayne. To end a long story. I believe "Jorah" may have "sold" slaves. But I believe all the people he sold were people hoping to escape or to start new lives. He part of a Rhaegar plot. Honestly, I shift a few people around, but this is what I think happened. Tywin, Pycelle, and Varys worked together to replace Elia and her baby with two people that died some other way. Gregor was told to take the blame. I think either Ned hates Jamie and Tywin because Tywin asked him to put Robert on the Throne and to help them hid the Targs, or because Jamie doesn't remember everyone he killed (I think Jamie may have killed Aerys and his Granddaughter). I think Lyanna may have given birth in the Tower, but she wasn't there the whole time. I think Ashara may have been the person in the tower, and either because he disapproved or because she died giving birth he was pissed. And Howland Reed managed to end a fight before anyone got hurt. Dany is Ned's daughter and that's why he gets so unhinged when he's told to have her killed. The Daynes married into the Targaryan family and may have the fire genes, to match Lyanna's ice, and if Jorah/Arthur it still works. For the same reason, Ned/Ashara makes sense. Viserys is probably a blackfire or he actually is real and they just uses him. I don't think Varys(blackfire plot) was aware of Dany. If he was he didn't tell anyone else. But Viserys was given a very young girl bought at a slave told to make her into his sister. This is why he repeats constantly that "I'm the last, and she can never be the dragon." He really believes it, and so did most other people. But Dany was "sold" with some "poachers" right about the time Viserys would have needed her. Lynesse marrying a nobody in the north? What about some one house Hightower knew was Arthur Dayne? What is Lynesse (or Lyanna) was "sold" as a poacher to make sure Dany was safe? And then she slipped off to pretend to be a Septa and teach Aegon? Or what if she works at the place Jorah always goes to find a his wife and she's not actually a whore? OMG, tinfoil overload. Sorry. But, I do believe that Lyanna was Ethan and at that very least Jorah and her were very good friends. Mance might be Rhaegar, but my money is on Jorah being Arthur Dayne at the moment (Jeor, Jorah, Jon). Now don't get me started on the Iron Born. That's an even bigger wad of foil. That's why Ned also think Arya will change too. Rhaegar did abduct Lyanna that's what Wildlings do, that means marriage. Ethan was alive because he was mole not because he was a she. If Arthur Dayne is Mance than he is not Jorah Mormont because Ned was haunting Jorah and continue to hate him until his death. Mance though is given free range south to the Wall. Daenerys was born in Dragonstone, Elia didn't give birth to anyone and no woman was in ToJ. Lyanna was in WF hiding in the tower where Bran caught Cersei and Jaime. Jon I don't think he is a Targaryen I think he is a Dayne that's why Mance/Arthur is interested in him. I also don't believe Blackfyre has any impact and Young Griff is the son of R&L, the only Targaryen bastard is Varys but through Bloodraven not Blackfyre

I've spent countless hours trying to look behind the curtain and trying to find all the strings. Everyone's character is buried deep in their names and it would take forever to explain it all. For example, Varys pretends to be a worker in the black cells. And he uses the name Rugen. Latin name for male hormone in Androgen. Andro is the part that means male. If you cut that part off and throw it in the flames what's left? Rogen or Rugen. Even the name Varys is Latin and gives you insight into the character. Place names, people's names. The strings are there. You think it's crazy, that's fine. Why did Jamie loose his hand? Because the Norse god Tyr lost his hand holding it in the mouth of Fenrir. During Ragnarok Tyr and Garm(the great hound) will kill eachother in battle. That should tell you something about what happens to Jamie. Super serious, it's fun trying to guess what's happening just from the story. But if you start figuring out what inspired the story it suddenly makes a different kind of sense. I may be wrong. These things only inspire him and he makes things his own. But Arthur means Bear and Jorah knows WAY to much about Rhaegar to just be a knight from an island in the north, at least from what makes sense to me. Plus 4 pages of translations and stories from history. These stories by the order of the green hand are awesome. And right about a lot as far as I can tell. But a few things might be a bit different.

But Jorah Mormont for is Jorah Mormont I think Northern lords had conflicted views about Rickard because of Southern ambitions and Mormonts helped hide Rhaegar and Lyanna. Hence the reason Jeor is at the Wall and Maege Mormont having bastard with unidentified father. That father might be Tormund (Gerold Hightower) and Maege will help her lover. Ryswell and Dustin's are other houses with speculated loyalty in my eyes. For centuries Starks married First Men letting Andal blood taint you doesn't make any sense

I love your videos and I take almost all of this as canon except for quentyn being dead and oberyn knowing Joffrey would be assassinated. It seems like oberyn poisoned Tywin with widow’s blood and knew he would be put on trial for that. As far as LF and Doran being friends of sorts, wow, I am excited to see!

Mine too. He ran off with all the money and documents and used a proxy to inform my mother of his desire to get a divorce. That didn't stop him from breaking into our home and stealing trunk-loads of stuff from us! Most of it had no reselling value, but high emotional value and to top it all off, he left behind a rotting bird which caused my cat to get sick and die... and that's only the tip of the iceberg (the most obvious way in which he deliberately hurt us).

I love y'all digging into the Martells. I figured/read Doran posioned Tywin and if Tyrion didn't kill him he would died from the Widows Blood. They would blame Oberyn and would take trial by combat. And i never put Doran working with Littlefinger but they both have ties in the free cities, only that Petyr Baelish dealt with the Braavos who don't deal in slaves.
