Game of Thrones is an original HBO series based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling novels. In a world where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime, the crown of Westeros comes with a price. Betrayal, lust, intrigue and supernatural forces shake the four corners of the Kingdom, from the scheming south and the savage eastern lands, to the frozen north and the ancient Wall that protects the realm from the darkness beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noble men vie for power in the bloody struggle for the Iron Throne.

@@pr-tj5by Yes, and that was further derailment of his character from the book, by the time Season 6 is supposed to be set. Jaime's entire character arc is remembering his honor, and choosing to be his own man. His "love" for Cersei is nothing more than the result of toxic, abusive codependency. Cersei doesn't really love him any more than as an extension of herself. His breaking away from her in Season 7 was just a delayed counterpart to what he's already done in the books. Jaime sees Cersei at last for what she really is, and can't stand her anymore. So in Season 8, for him to suddenly and without explanation go back to her, even when she tried to have him killed, makes no sense whatsoever. And that line, "I never really cared for them. Innocent or otherwise" is a direct contradiction of why he killed Aerys II. He did it to save thousands of lives. He *did* care. But Benioff and Weiss "kinda forgot" that.

@@MrImastinker You would have more of a case if he hadn't said what he said in season 6 but he did say it, and that's why Jamie is nothing more than a Weasel who threw a kid out of a window and killed his king once Kings Landing was being sacked and it was time to change sides!

There is much depth in this scene, even a short scene with dialogue says so much about both characters. Jaime desperately wanted Ned’s approval and it ate at him that an honorable man like Lord Stark never respected him. It was as if Jaime said “fine, I’ll be the prick everyone tells me I am” when really he just wanted respect and people to understand why did what he did. Even in season 6 Jaime tells Lord Edmure that he never liked Ned but that was just because Ned was the person Jaime always wanted to be perceived as…someone honorable. The way Ned lands the word “safe” at the end was like an arrow piercing at Jaime’s pride. Brilliant acting

You served him well, when serving was safe. That's a knock out line. Your points are all true. But Ned recognises that the assassination of the king was committed when the tide had turned anyway. Same with the Lannisters late arrival to the cause. This commitment after victory was assured, rankles him as much as oaths.

@@ben86jones82 Idk. No one liked arys. If he was liked, then the Lannisters would've supported his cause, but they didn't. They would've supported ned and Robert, but like how every conflict like that goes down in history, it is very risky. Leading a rebellion or revolution is fucking risky, and if you get caught, you are getting the worst death imaginable, as is your family. So yeah idk. Also when the time came to when the king was fucked, everyone turned on him. Roberts rebellion is the most realistic event in asoiaf imo. Way more so than ACoK, because in that, the Lannisters should've been fucked, but they were lucky that all the kings were stupid, lucky that the events magically fell into their favor, even though they failed at every turn, and they were VERY fucking lucky that all the kings didn't form an alliance against them. Alliances have always been formed against the larger, more powerful nations. Then once the alliance won, it would break apart and they would squabble amongst themselves.

I love how different this scene is when you rewatch it after season 3 compared to the first time. First time we see this scene, it's satisfying to see Ned put Jaime down with such a cutting line, since we only know what Ned knows. But now, we sympathise with Jaime, since his actions were genuinely honourable. His comebacks at Ned are recontextualised from him just being a smartass to a display of genuine frustration at the fact that his selfless actions have resulted in everyone viewing him as a dishonourable coward.

Exactly what I was thinking watching this now. It's especially poignant because as an audience, we'd like to think we'd always instantly do the honorable thing in dire circumstances. But the reality is most of us are more like Jaime than we'd like to admit. The banality of evil is facilitated by group complicity. Jaime stood by through many atrocities before he finally had the courage to act.

Ned is saying Jaime only killed the Mad King when it was convenient and obvious that the rebellion was prevailing. The second Jaime knew his father was taking the city he immediately betrayed his oath and stabbed Aerys in the back because it was "safe" to do so. That is why Ned despises Jaime so much and yet admires Barristan Selmy and Arthur Dayne even though they were also present when his father and brother were burned alive. Unlike Jaime, they kept their oath to the Mad King not only when it was convenient and safe but also in the end when it was hopeless to continue fighting for the Targaryens. That is the point Ned is making in this clip.

What Ned doesn't know though, is that Jaime was never just a fair-weather friend to Aerys. Jaime begged Rhaeghar to let him accompany him to the trident against Robert. When Tywin arrived and Aerys wanted to believe he had come to help him, Jaime directly warned Aerys against about his dad, urging him to surrender peacefully. @@estabanspicyweiner930 I can’t agree with that. These two don't get nearly enough credit for their scenes together. All anyone ever talks about is Tyrion, Robert, Bronn, Baelish, but this is easily one of the single best conversations in the whole show and it's delivered masterfully by these two actors. I wish the show had actually portrayed the scene of Ned walking into the Iron Throne room to find Aerys II dead at the steps and Jaime sitting on it instead of merely describing it to us in dialogue, perhaps even as the very opening scene. It could have effortlessly communicated so much story to the audience without a single word spoken and added more weight to this scene.

We actually know that Jaime did not tell Ned. He sat on the iron throne with the dead king at his feet whilst Ned rode up to him. Ned then stared at Jaime coldly and then Jaime got up and told Ned he was only warming the seat for Robert. At that point in time, Jaime was having an internal mental breakdown, and by the time he was probably ready to tell what really happened everybody had already judged him as an oathbreaker. Except Jaime didn’t kill him there because there were hundreds of people in the room that could’ve easily overpowered him. When he killed him, not only would it have been more than a suicide mission, it was when the mad king threatened to kill an massively larger group of people than he did previously, and civilians at that. It’s not like Jaime didn’t sacrifice anything. His honor and public perception were ruined after this and he knew he would be seen as a monster. He’s not like Tywin, he betrayed the king then because a. He could actually succeed then. And b. He wanted Jaime to kill countless people at that point. @@fantasymangacomicvisionary5688Perhaps I worded what it badly. I don’t think it was necessarily that right thing to let Aerys kill them, but it was understandable given that it would’ve been a meaningless death on his part, it’s hard to blame him, especially since it was the right thing to do since he managed to do more good in the future by slaying the king later on. More importantly, there’s a very big difference between being willing to let two people die when you can’t do anything about it, and letting thousands of people die when you can do something about it. Especially when he’s being demanded to do so himself now. These scenarios are very different. Whether Jaime would’ve tried to kill Aerys at that point if he was guarded I’m not sure, but he certainly wouldn’t have taken out his orders to kill so many people. My issue here is that 1. Ned is clearly upset that Jaime broke his oath when it was the moral thing to do there 2. Ned assumes that Jaime did so for only self benefit, when in reality it was a very selfless and self sacrificing action on his part. Although to be fair Jaime never fully shared his side of the story, not that Ned would care.

This scene is especially poignant because as an audience, we'd like to think we'd always instantly do the honorable thing in dire circumstances. Jaime stood by through many atrocities before he finally had the courage to act.

This is a perfect example of how parents can teach their children something good in theory but unrealistic in practice. Tywin taught his children not to concern themselves with what other people think. To a certain extent that's good but at a certain point it's not realistic. If you want to live with other people and have friends and respect, you have to explain yourself. Nobody stopped Jaime from simply explaining his actions. The only thing that stopped him was his father's teaching. If Jaime had simply explained why he killed the king, he never would have had to be bitter.

Jamie’s true problem is that he’s always been too insecure for his own good. Beneath his armored veil of sarcasm and overconfidence, he is actually scorned and bitter that other people will not accept him for the greatest act he ever performed in his life. His vanity with his reputation is his undoing. Ned on the other hand is indeed being excessively judgmental here. Sure, he has plenty reason to dislike and distrust Jaimie in general, but in this rare private occurrence, Jaimie was actually being genuinely sympathetic for his family’s tragedy. The respectable thing to do would’ve been to at least acknowledge that sentiment for what it is and perhaps show some appreciation for the unavoidability of how it all turned out. Blaming Jaimie for allowing them them to die and then also for not faithfully serving the man who killed them is as hypocritical as it is unfair. One does not make unnecessary enemies off of petty principle, especially when in a place where one has precious few friends. But I suppose the point is just that no one likes the lannisters, and Jaimie’s brooding half hearted attempts to be seen as different, aren’t enough to sway anyone’s stubborn pre established perceptions.
