fetterkeks Near the beginning of the game, when Toriel tells you to wait for her while she goes shopping. If you wait long enough, you'll get a series of phone calls from her - one of which will indicate that her phone was stolen by a dog. She only gets it back once you venture far enough onward to trigger the first original phone call that would've been made if you just walked on anyway.

Sans has knowledge and some control over time: he is aware of timelines, saves and resets, can allegedly stop time, teleport, and knows you can "time travel". On the flipside, Papyrus is aware of space. He knows about the river person and snowman when no one else acknowledges them, he can tell you anything about the world whenever you call him; he can manipulate physics (he can make your soul susceptible to gravity, and we also see him float/ walk on air after your pacifist fight). He just seems less powerful because he has no desire to harm. Papyrus is emotion and sans is logical. Makes sense. Maybe they're just foils of each other

There's one more thing that makes this theory solid - the amalgamates themselves. Studying determination was not the end goal of the experiments - having the ability to merge monsters was. Sans and Papyrus, if they really are WD Gaster, would be the only monsters known who would be able to gain from these experiments.

I don’t know if you realised this but as you can see the colour of sans’ jacket is blue and papyrus’ costume is mostly red. As some people know the two sides of the brain are represented with two colours red and blue. According to Bo Burnham’s song the right brain is represented with the colour red and the left brain is represented with the colour blue. And as Mat claims Sans is the left and Papyrus is the right brain. So this may show that Toby Fox created the characters this way so he left a hint in their design. Idk this is my theory

Not to mention that both sans and papyrus are the only monsters (as mettaton's a robot ghost) who don't visibly or audibly show a monster soul. Another thing that I found, is that Papyrus' main color of clothing is orange, whilst Sans' main color of clothing is blue. Orange and blue are complete opposites on the color wheel. That's not mentioning the fact that they are complete opposites in other ways. Sans is short, Papyrus is tall; Sans' font is rounded and small, while Papyrus' is tall and sharp; even Sans' speech is more humanoid-ish and deep, while Papyrus has a higher, more metallic sound to his diologue speech patterns.

To explain one thing that Matpat missed: The creation/machine that Gaster fell into is not a Determination injection machine, but a DT *Extraction* machine. It removes determination. Now, when monsters are injected with determination, they fuse with more matter/dust/monsters, and start to melt. Naturally, extraction of Determination could split a monster soul/body/mind. Thus you'd get two* monsters and the original husk, split on personality and ability. sans having greater power, Papyrus being, as Undyne put it, "pretty freaking tough." Now, as for the Husk and journal entry, I'd imagine what was left of the original Gaster, effectively empty of determination, tried to quickly fix himself by injecting determination. He recovers temporarily (as did Alphys's test subjects), and made the final entry while talking to Papyrus and sans. Then he began to melt. It has a faint resemblance to a Gaster Blaster fused with a brain. It's bullet attacks summon smiling white faces (Gasters?). It has no physical substance - it talks through your phone and gains health by absorbing your attack. Also, a phrase it says is "Lorem ipsum docet", while a filler phrase in code, translates to "Pain teaches." Now, how did Gaster split into more than 3? Well, there are two possibilities. Firstly, Gaster is split across time and space, leaving "memories" of himself. Alternatively, they could be the remains of a Gaster who is soulless. Either way, the three Memoryheads confirm the sans-papyrus-gaster group.

Big info: Matpat, if you play through on the pacifist run on the Nintendo switch, in the epilogue you get something BIZZARE! If you go back to Clam Girl in the epilogue she tells you something strange, for starters Clam Girl has always talked about a character known as Susie and we never knew who the character was until Deltarune came along. So if you do this she says, "So you never met my neighbor's daughter But please don't despair. Because the time that you will meet her..." Then she turns into a Gaster follower version of herself and says "...Is fast approaching." I know it's not much to go on, but this might mean that Deltarune is gonna have some connections to the story of what happened to Gaster! People are saying that Deltarune might be a different timeline from Undertale, and Gaster has a lot to do with timelines, so this is definitely some interesting information.

This is an interesting take on the Sans and Papyrus personalities. As a writer I thought the opposite personalities was a writing tool and I still think it is. The opposite personalities tool is sort of like the smart/dumb or fat/skinny tool. Having two opposite things working together and bouncing off of each other makes a story more entertaining and dynamic. It's a very smart decision on Toby Foxes part to use this tool to make you love Sans and Papyrus even more.

It would explain why sans is trying to return G to his original state. It also works with the theory of the "other two" from Entry #17 being Alphys and sans. Because, sans was there to see his father leave forever. And he DIDN'T STOP HIM! Now we know from Genocide that: sans may be lazy, but when all hope is lost (say, somebody splitting through time[lines] and space) he knows the right thing to do, and finds it as his obligation (Like Spider-Man). So he decides to take all of Gaster's research on the DETERMINATION Extractor (The machine G COULD have fallen into) and brings it home, where he works at night (no wonder he's sleeping in hotland) to get his dad back. He does this so that next time [if there is one] he can do the right thing, and stop Gaster from making the same mistake. It'd also explain the Skelebro's sudden appearence in Snowdin. They used to live with G in the Lab, But since G's out of the picture, and there's a new royal scientist in town, they were forced to move. B U T T , it also explains how sans knows Alphys, they probably met while moving out of/into the lab (PAPYRUS was probably just already on the road ready to move on. But sans had more trouble saying goodbye, he can't express emotion very good) and sans and Alphys probably hit it off over science-talk. Also if sans grew up with a Father who was a Scientist, then it'd explain his interest in Science (specifically science, instead of some other academics, like math or history) He, being the left-brain he is, looked up to the smart male role model. All the more reason sans has a harder time letting go than PAPYRUS. After all: 1) PAPYRUS is a master of EXPRESSING EMOTION so he probably is all cried out or something by the time Frisk first appears in the Underground. While sans has trouble conveying and dealing with emotions, "right"? 2) sans probably was more close to G than PAPYRUS, and 3) sans is the more responsible OLDER BRO, so he finds it up to HIM to get their dad back. He doesn't just owe it to Gaster, but he owes it to PAPYRUS, It's partially HIS FAULT that Gaster was lost FOREVER, he DIDN'T STOP GASTER! It was HIS MISTAKE as much as it was G's. sans has to right his wrong. But hey, that's just a comment. aaaa GAMME-RELATEDDD THEPRETICALL COMMENNTTTT! Thanks for reading. That explains why Papyrus is the way he is. Not just in behavioral preferences like the ones you mentioned, but also in that he is EASILY the most determined character in the game. When you kill Papyrus, the other characters talk about how he usually goes to every possible length to impress Undyne, always answers his phone within two rings, etc. This is also shown in his lifetime, when he is depicted going as far as he can possibly go to convince you that he has no feelings for you. Even as he is about to die, he stays determined and talks as though he is winning and you can't handle his attacks. He even sees his own body turn to dust and responds with "at least I still have my head." If he is the result of an experiment involving the injection of determination, that makes sense as a part of his personality. Sans, on the other hand, is depicted as a lazy and careless being who possesses the ability to warp time-space, but only uses it either for more extensive laziness (hey, I have a shortcut to Grillby's) or when it is absolutely necessary (like in his boss battle). He is never depicted using this ability to serve a greater purpose than himself, and he is overall a laid-back and unmotivated character. But if Sans is also a result of the same determination experiment, why does he have absolutely no determination? Well, since the mind of Gaster was split into the left and right components... all of that determination went to Papyrus. Determination itself is a right-brain trait. It isn't affected by logic and reasoning, which Sans possesses; it is an entirely emotional trait. Sans received none of the determination because it isn't really something that his side of the brain is capable of having. I don't know, I probably missed something. But that's how I understand it. I think that this might actually be something that Toby Fox put into the game completely intentionally, knowing full well that this is the origin story he wanted to imply.

Doesn't worry.. he gives up. Literally gives up, which would be the reason why Gaster isn't coming back. If you ever decide to do another undertale theory, why don't you try and figure out how fights work. I've always wondered what it means as your soul moves and asgore destroys you mercy button, and not only that, but why Sans is the only one smart enough to dodge, why you can't attack back when it's not your "turn," why the monsters (including Sans) leave holes in their attacks when Sans also demonstrates with his "Get Dunked On" that he can just create a box of bones, and why they even let you have turns in the first place if they're trying to kill you and you can easily kill them. To anyone saying that this is just a game and I'm over analyzing it: First, why are you on this channel?? Second, this game is meant to have lore explanations of every mechanic used and the characters demonstrate their knowledge of your fight screen, and the date/hangout screen. Three characters. The picture isn’t of just any amount, but of _three_ smiling people. “don’t forget” This is the final song you hear in deltarune. It’s theme is heard in many other songs. Much like Once Upon A Time from UNDERTALE, Don’t Forget is heard a lot in deltarune. The main song of each game. Sans makes an appearance in deltarune. Perhaps in chapter 2 or later chapters he will have a larger role. This could explain why these are found in the workshop at _his_ house.

I think Deltarune happens before Undertale, which is why Sans has these photos in undertale. Sans and Papyrus can't forget or they'll end up like the goner kid, and they won't remember Gaster OR their previous lives in Deltarune. Gaster isn't referring to Alphys and San when he says, "What do you two think?", but Sans and Papyrus as the transformation occurs. He sees himself breaking into two, so he leaves the message to the monsters that would soon become the only memory of him (save his followers).

It wouldn’t make sense for “you two” to refer to both an existing person presumably working at the lab (Alphys) and one who doesn’t properly exist yet (Sans, given that Gaster still exists as he writes his message); they wouldn’t both be able to respond. Alphys can’t tell Gaster what she thinks after he vanishes, and Sans can’t do anything at all before Gaster disappears, given that he doesn’t exist yet. Even if we assume that he’s writing the message as he’s starting to dissociate completely, it would be “you three” if the message was also directed at Alphys (who AFAIK didn’t even have that job at the time).

I would also assume that sans have a connection with alphys because she is the new royal scientist so sans gave her some information about the whole idea... Also notice the name of the attack: "Gaster's blaster" saying that it is gaster's invention, so it make sense that only papyrus and sans would be able to use it...

Here's another bit to help with your theory, if you interact with the shed near Sans and Papyrus' house, it says that it's locked from the other side. But if Papyrus captures the player they find themselves and Papyrus in the shed; thus proving that Papyrus can teleport as well.

I would also like to point out a few things I noticed in the game that I found interesting that help support your claim. In Sans and Papyrus's house, you can find a book lying on a table labeled "joke book" but inside is a "quantum physics" book, and inside that is a joke book, and the paradox goes on- just like how the player creates timelines. Also, quantum physics? Directly means the following: "quantum physics allows for particles to be in two states at the same time" which heavily supports your claim of Sans AND Papyrus both being Gaster at the same time. Another thing! In entry 17 Gaster speaks of "photons" which are linked to anti-gravity. Just a few things I found seriously interesting! Thanks for creating such an awesome trio of theory videos, I really enjoyed them!

In log 17, gaster was the one who said "what do you two think", while he wrote that log he was still present and hadn't yet fallen into his creation. Then how is it that the two people he was referring to could be "sans" and alphys. Weren't sans and papyrus created after he fell in, doesnt that mean the when he was said you "two" he was probably referring to alphys and someone else. Maybe asgore or toriel. Also there is a wierd connection between sans and toriel as we can see that they both know each other through talking throught the door and haven't seen each other yet. Gaster after falling in is now a space time traveller; hes not completely dead you can meet him in a very specific location meaning he still exists and can interact and exist in the physical world as he pleases so its completely possible that he wrote that after falling in- The rest of the logs were written by alphys(you can notice her style of panicking) because if gaster existed then he wouldve been the cheif royal scientist assuming alphys wasnt recrcuited after he vanished and it wouldve been him writing all the logs (or most of the logs along with aplhys and the third person) what i meant was if the logs were before falling in then why start with number 17 wouldnt he be writing along from 1? and im pretty sure the blue prints were provided by sans to alphys or vise versa cause alphys mentions the blueprints in her logs and sans has one in his secret room- all leading to conclusion that gaster and sans are related (but i think the right brain left brain theory is far fetched lmao)

One of the cool concepts that I've found myself believing is that Sans and Pap were less CREATED by Gaster's split, and more that they took on ASPECTS he lost in being shattered. That Papyrus wasn't precisely a SCIENTIST, but maybe more of an engineer, given his apparent ability to create puzzles and the bookcase with fluffy bunny and advanced puzzle making. Sans, on the other hand, seems very much a scientist by trade. I think they were the ones most compatible for whatever reason. And so in them, a piece of him was stored. An aspect. A fragment. But that is just speculation ^-^
