Wait, if the majora's moon is that small with that mass, it wouldn't create those changing tides or orbits unless Termina is also small... Edit: it would also require that the gravitational constant in Termina would be far greater than on earth, assuming that termina is much smaller in mass than earth. Objects on termina wouldn't still affect each other with a noticeable amount of force. The moon coming closer just will make people able to jump a bit higher under it. But yeah it's the Zelda multiverse ofc the constant can be higher.

The planet needs a certain volume and density too to not be affected by the gravitational pull of the moon etc etc. But termina seems to be super tiny either, not to mention that it’s apparently either imagination or alt reality

I like this theory, however gravitational force depends on how massive and how dense an object is. If the planet Termina is on is roughly the size of Earth, and the moon remains at the same size you depicted, the gravitational force exerted on to the planet would be next to nothing. As the moon gets closer, Earth (or whatever planet Termina is on) would exert a stronger gravitational pull on it, and big ol' nightmare moon wouldn't be able to counteract it with its own gravitational pull. Because that moon is so small, and so much less dense than the world of Zelda would be, and traveling at such a slow rate towards Earth (Which is wrong by the way because as the moon would get closer, gravitational pull would get stronger and the moon would be pulled in faster so it wouldn't be constant) it would stop on the ground and just stay there, a bulging mass that isn't even as tall as some of our mountains. Now, big eye-moon might not destroy the entire world, but it would destroy Clocktown as it is shown that it does tower over it in size (which is extremely strange for a town to be so small) and the buildings wouldn't be able to support its mass. Regardless, this moon is the equivalent of an extremely slow baseball being thrown at one of those giant see-through balls that people get in and run across water.
@sailormars58179 жыл бұрын
The only hole in that theory is that skull kid is summoning it, remember that, so if he was able to summon it onto the ground, most life form would have been crushed. How's that for a one sentence counter theory?

I have to point out how incredibly small majora's moon is. (smaller than the Great Pyramid of Giza) Therefore it would have a very weak gravitational pull (if we're assuming that it's as dense as Earth's moon like it was in his calculations). So, it would not be as much of an apocalyptic event as he claims. It's basically just a meteor (space rocks smaller than 100 meters are considered meteoroids and then meteor if they're in the Earth's atmosphere). It would only cause localized damage (if it weren't falling so slowly). At most it would just crush the tower and sit in the center of the town at the rate it is falling. By the way, majora's moon is basically defying gravity by falling that slowly and not at all accelerating. Also, the planet is not rotating beneath the "moon". It doesn't take a highly educated astronomer to point these out. Also, is this the only moon that orbits this planet? Because you'd need a good size moon like our own to keep the planet's rotation stable making the planet livable. And there's no way that majora's moon would be able to do that. I could keep on ranting about this if I wanted. I'm always quick to identify the little details that are inaccurate.

basically what the vid is saying is that the explosion, based on real life physics, should have never even been possible. the moon would have crushed the tower, tumbled onto the town, and stopped rolling at the nearest cliff. there was also some climate related stuff but that all depends on the actual influence that tiny moon had on the planet.(which couldnt have been much)

I never saw the moon "falling". For me it was more like it was being pulled by magic and wouldn't stop at the clock tower. The moon would keep going as you can also see in the final cutscenes before the battle. The skull kid let out a scream which turned the moon's eyes red and all the sudden the 4 giants having difficulty holding the moon back. So? Also your last point , wasn't that about IF the moon has the same size as our? If its much smaller, its gravitation would mostly likely do barely to none damage before "hitting" the earth. Its like saying a giant space ship as the size of the majoras mask moon would kill us all by just being near our planet. you see for at least 3 days in the game that the moon facing clock town. So people on the other side of the world aren't even seeing the moon at all, since its not rotating like a normal moon would. And the reason for that is magic. It being hold in place by a force from majoras mask.

thats true since the moon is much bigger and if it crashed then it'd be so huge it'd make us scared out of our wits, but here... that moon is a little shit
@ib2455610 жыл бұрын
you're forgetting a key element, the moon in majora's mask must have been much closer to the planet then our moon, the moon doesn't simply falls onto the planet due to gravitation, for termina's moon to fall onto to the planet that slowly and to still have made such a good progress in such a short time he should have been vary close already, hack, it would take it over a year to cross the the first level of the atmosphere. and as you know the more an object gets closer to you, its gravitational force is stronger. while it is tiny, any increase in the gravitational force that moon may have would be extreme and would have devastating effects, think about it, because our moon is so far away, that small a change in its distance wouldn't be that critical, in fact, our moon is actually gets a few meters further away from the earth each year, but it will take about a million years or so before there will be any effects on the earth climate from it.

Itay Bryt true but it wouldn't destroy the planet
@ib2455610 жыл бұрын
Minecast Zyad48 the gravitational consequences, even if our moon were to get closer, would not be the destruction of earth either, it would make the earth inhospitable for life to exist on it, in other words the planet would still be there, but all life on it will come to an abrupt end, think about, why doesn't planet Venus has any life on it, because it is not hospitable for life due to its climate and the make up of its atmosphere, and that is due to it being closer to the sun than planet earth is, the same in reverse is true for Mars, because it is to far away from the sun, its climate is too cold and thus it isn't hospitable for life, the earth is in a perfect balance here, it is not too close and to far away from the sun, thus making it hospitable for life, and any change in that balance would make the earth inhospitable for life to exist on it.

Silly nitpick, but if you watch the game over cutscene, you'll see that the moon actually explodes before it even touches the ground. It's this explosion that destroys everything around it and kills Link, not the impact. The same sort of thing has happened during some asteroid “collisions” on Earth, where the incoming asteroid actually explodes in the atmosphere before even reaching the ground. It still doesn't make a huge amount of sense in the grand scheme of things (the moon in Majora doesn’t have anywhere near the energy required for that), but it could maybe at least explain the destruction somewhat. Nuclear bombs are often designed to detonate before they hit the ground, to extend the blast radius. Maybe if we assume that Majora himself triggers the explosion that destroys termina from inside the moon then the resulting damage makes a little more sense; you’re then effectively looking at a 450 kiloton bomb rather than a 450000 ton piece of rock. It’s still completely absurd, but perhaps just slightly less absurd. XD

@@adelaidejordes9125 Well, that brings me to another silly nitpick... We don't actually see the moon destroy the world, only the area surrounding Clock Town, which is maybe 100 square miles at most. A mass of 450 thousand tons would have absolutely no measurable tidal/gravitational effects on a planet big enough to produce essentially the same gravity as the Earth, but a bomb of the same size would easily level an area of

Wait, isn't the moon empty inside? Like doesn't it have that weird tree place inside? Wouldn't that make it like a giant rock balloon? Also, can't the magic increase the downward force? We see that happen just before Link enters the moon. Also, doesn't this mean that its low gravity wouldn't affect the world much? Also, gravity is magic in that world (as a separate universe it is very likely that the laws of Physics would be nothing like ours). This is proven when the gravity flips in the Stone Tower, but we are told by the Garo Master that all this is doing is flipping the placement of the moon and earth. This means that the center of gravity in this universe is intrinsic to certain points (and since none of the physics change we can assume that distance doesn't affect gravity) and that the celestial bodies are immune to gravity, as Termina doesn't immediately fall into the moon after they switch, despite its massive mass. (You may think that the moon falling to Termina disproves this, but remember, Majora had to push the moon toward Termina, it wasn't falling, it was being forced to move by magic.) And that small of a moon wouldn't have had such a disastrous effect on the weather. And this solar system may just be Geocentric as the stars make light without nuclear fusion (star fragments). In other words, the physics are different, so you can't compare things using our scientific laws.

In some of the comments here, it was suggested that the moon is simply a magical bomb that's set to go off at approximately the time when it would hit the ground. I honestly always thought that Majora’s Mask was similar to Alice in Wonderland in that Link falls down and wakes up in a dream-like place similar to the Hyrule that we’ve all come to know but it’s also not like Hyrule at all. (I’ll explain) (And yes, I’m aware that Alice in Wonderland is super different from the game, I’m just comparing the instances of “falling down” and waking up somewhere new) I played the game when I was younger and I still sort of feel that way about it. Throughout the game, after he “falls down”, Link sees people and things that he met/saw during the Ocarina of Time, but everything is different: the settings are different, the story is different and even the characters we see that were also in Ocarina of Time play completely different roles; To me, while I was playing the game, it was almost like Link was walking through this weird fever dream that happened in a place called Termina; a lot of the things and characters there were almost the same as they were in his previous quest but not really at the same time. Like, I was having serious deja vu when I played through both games when I was little. *I probably don’t even make any sense-*

I keep theorizing what would happen if the moon was crashing into earth and it took a weak for it to hit. You just cleared up all my mixed up assumptions, thank you.
@bigstudwithaguitar11 жыл бұрын
His logic ate itself. For the purposes of his first argument (Kinetic energy calculation), he went out of his way to determine that the moon was (in this alternate reality) way way smaller than the real life moon. For the purposes of his second argument (the gravitational/tide argument) he assumed the moon was the same mass as the moon in OUR reality in order to say that it would destroy the delicate ecosystem on earth. If the planet link is on (presumably based on earth but different) is small enough for that moon to make differences to tide (even though he did use the standard estimate for the energy to destroy OUR Earth) perhaps the moon would be able to destroy it. If the planet link is on is standard Earth size, it would be fair to assume that the moon is too small to be effected by tide FROM THIS MOON (keep in mind, high tide never happened in the game, even though the moon was nearly crashing into earth. You could stand next to the coast all year and nothing would happen. Therefore, it would be fair to assume that the moon is really really small, and the Earth is standard Earth size. When you take all of this into consideration, the only logical explaination is this. The exceptionally small moon is going to destroy Clock town, but that's about it. Nobody will die, but the Town will be slowly committed to the ground. Link helped to stop THAT from happening. Not pointless. :)

Ethan Underwood it's not about size. It's density. Mat pat said that the density was the same, and the moon was extremely close,the tides would be huge enough to flood termina
@aba123857 жыл бұрын
Actually I'm pretty sure Ethan's more right than you considered Captain. Density is not the only think to worry about in gravity, but mass is what you need to consider. So, since the mass of this moon(more like asteroid and not even a big asteroid at that more like a pretty small asteroid one at 208' wide) is so little it would not be able to affect a planets tides as easily as our moon. It may be too small to do anything catastrophic to our tides no matter how close it got. The real question is what secret force is slowing the fall of the moon down so much. It should be falling much much faster than it currently falls. So some unknown force must actually be slowing it down to the point that it can just land gently on the ground, but possibly this energy when actually contacting something other than this moon is being released and destroying the town.
@trashcubed21237 жыл бұрын
It has the same density he said, but not the same mass. If you had a whole planet made out of stone or just a pebble, the density would be the same, but the mass would be different. Or am I mistaking? Please correct me if so.
@Kringle3087 жыл бұрын
TheIndieReviewer You're correct. Density=mass/volume. As long as it's made up of the same material, then the density stays the same and the mass and volume are different. Matt is assuming that both moons are cut from the same type of rock without any proof.
@YukonHexsun7 жыл бұрын
If a moon that size would affect tides just because it's a moon made out of material as dense as moon rock, you might as well say that the moon rocks brought back to Earth by astronauts would cause tides. This thing's puny.

I was with you until you got to the tidal effects thing. A rock that size exerts no significant gravitational force. At worst, it would squash anything under it by its weight, and probably roll over some more stuff until it hit a divot. Then there'd be a big rock sitting in Termina Field. People in Clock Town could casually stroll away from it and not get hurt.
@springtrap11567 жыл бұрын
Jerkwad152 Romani ranch and snow head are protected by rocks and the valley would get burned for a few miles. Most people would flee to the mountains because of height. And the ranch could be saved because of giant hills. Ikana would be spared except for it entrance. Great bay may live too because it's low sea level. The only areas affected would be the clock town and parts of the swamp because they are vulnerable. Wood fall is probably where the deku and humans would take refuge because it is very safe and all the need to do is seal the entrance. The Zoras, Gorons, po's, and deku would survive. All of clock town would be destroyed but everyone can survive
@abbadon29297 жыл бұрын
Jerkwad152 well, you also have to consider damage done to atmosphere as the moon enters it. an asteroid of a similar size wiped out the dinosaurs but also cause massive atmospheric damage, as well as stripping th atmosphere of its ozone layer, which causes a myriad of issues in the environment.
@Jerkwad1527 жыл бұрын
+The NopeBoat Yeah, except it had a miniscule amount of mass, was only slightly larger than Clock Town, no tidal forces, and moving slower than walking speed, so none of that applies.

The thing that these folks have apparently overlooked is the fact that a "moon" of its mass would not have enough gravitational force to cause the sort of apocalyptic conditions that they've described. To put this in perspective, I've calculated the force of the Terminian moon based on the numbers provided in this video: 2.97 x 10⁻⁵ N For those of you who don't know scientific notation, that's a _fucking small number_. There's a reason why only massive objects have enough of a gravitational pull to make any real difference - gravity is by far the weakest fundamental force in the entire universe. It is directly proportionate to the inertial mass of an object. That creepy-@ss thing in the Terminian skyline does not have enough girth to annihilate virtually anything.
@dekulink44810 жыл бұрын
Yeah he makes so many inconsistencies it's almost like he hasn't played the game.

@somewhathandsome528810 жыл бұрын
Also when you think about it, If the scale of the world in Majora's Mask was the same in proportion to our world, there wouldn't be any tidal waves, since the moon's gravitational force is not strong enough to cause any influence on the body of water.
@deusignis637710 жыл бұрын
Deku Link Does games That inconsistency isn't to do with the game, its just something that he hasn't seen with the information that he has already clearly obtained. Its to do with the fact that a smaller object has a smaller gravitational force, so its nothing to do with whether he's played the game or not, he just looked over a part of physics
@dekulink44810 жыл бұрын
Deus Ignis I wasn't talking specifically about this one, that comment was mostly geared towards his "Zelda timeline is wrong" video.
@YamatoFukkatsu10 жыл бұрын
I was with this up until the end, when it starts going on about how the moon's gravitational pull would fuck things over. One thing you're overlooking: gravity depends on an object's mass, and if the Termina moon is as small as you suggest, then I doubt that's really gonna do much of anything. It sounds like it might be just slightly worse than if a man-made satellite fell back down to our earth.... hell, do tides even exist in Termina?
@grayson-bubbles-light502510 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but you have to remember that an size object has gravity, and depending on the density of termina's moon, then we can determine if termina has tides or not. If it was as dense as our moon, termina would have very small tides, but still have tides. also, if it does have enough gravity to have tides, than it is able to push termina out of its orbit and have temperature changes as he said. Now, I could be wrong, but this all depends on the density of the moon
@genevevil2 жыл бұрын
I learn more from Game Theory than I do at school
@MrFlyingLamma11 жыл бұрын
Woah woah wait, hold on. Referring to the second part of the analysis, you stated that the tides would rise substantially more if the moon fell out of orbit. If the moon in Majora's Mask was the size of ours that would be true, but earlier in the video you clearly stated that it's clearly less in mass and thus gravity intensive than our moon. You basically made your second point null by your first point.
@illdie31410 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the moon have little to no effect on the tides or the orbit due to the fact that it is so much less massive than ours?
@darezzi9711 жыл бұрын
One thing you got wrong. ASSUMING that the density is the same as our moon. Because it isn't. For a body like that to go so slow, it either must have a really low mass and great surface (so that the air slows it down), or the mass of the earth is really low. Since Link doesn't skyrocket up every time he jumps, I'd assume that the earth is of normal weight. Which means the Majora moon is extremely light. Which means it doesn't affect the trajectory of the Earth. There. It's absolutely not a threat.

I wanna ask the Game Theorist team to make a edited video of this video so when I go back to my home town I can fulfill my promise to show this video to an 4th or 5th grade class in my old elementary school from my teachers class too. Gonna miss u MatPat. ❤

I would like to see an episode on kirby. Specifically, one in which you explain how that monstrous little pink puffball is even capable of eating as much as he does. That, or do an episode on how he's an eldritch abomination, or one on how dedede is really just a failed hero trying, and failing, to look after his people. Any of these, I think, would be interesting to watch.

Mat Pat: Unfortunately, with your ideas on the Majora's Mask Moon drowning out the coast areas is self-contradictory. What you described would be if a moon, with the mass and size of ours was to draw nearer to the Earth. However, you yourself have also stated that the MM moon is much, much, MUCH smaller than this. It would therefore stand to reason that its gravitational pull would be severely lacking and unable to have anywhere close to the effect as you have described. So, ultimately, there really should be no threat to Termina; the head carpenter was correct after all.

Actually the weight and size alone of the moon would be enough to at least crush clock town if not destroy the planet. Although links quest wouldn't be to save the world, it would still be necessary for him to save clock town. Really you have proven that his quest is not pointless.

Except at 1J/s being applied, it's extremely easy for the tower to stop the moon Like, easier than holding up a person easy. In fact, it's almost like the moon is holding itself back; the force of gravity would make it apply more than that with that kind of mass.

Actually with a moon that size there wouldn't even be a gravitational pull significant enough to cause any major catastrophes. So unless we're figuring that this moon is actually a hydrogen bomb disguised as a big grimacing rock, the only thing that gets destroyed is 1 town. Also, I'd like to see some Game Theories on some games from the Kingdom Hearts series.

The thing about the mass...isn't Majora's Moon hollow? I thought that spot at the end of the game with the tree and the open field took place inside the moon. That would throw the mass calculation way off!

You forgot to take in count that Majora's Moon is way smaller, so its gravitational pull would be much smaller, so the seas wouldn't be as afected as you'd think, if they affected much enough like to notice the change

At that point, with the moon being so close, it might not even matter.

Yup, is funny watching all these theories, it really surprises me how far can imagination go... but at the same time not everything is as true as it seems to be

Did you forget the gravitational pull of their moon is not as bad as our moon, so this might happen, but it would be so little that nobody would even notice

Well isn't it true that Majora's moon is nothing but a curse? It isn't the real moon of Zelda, just something created from the mask. I mean come on, at the end of the game it gets destroyed, Destroyed!! There is no way thats the actual moon
