This past November, PewDiePie released a video expressing his concerns that subscribers weren't seeing his latest uploads. In his words, the KZbin Sub Box was broken. And he's not the only one. Hundreds of creators, large and small, have expressed concerns about their subscribers not seeing their latest uploads. And they're not entirely wrong. Here's my theory on WHY this happens.

***** This is part of the settings each channel can adjust. If I'm not mistaken, channels with 500+ subscribers (that names have been verified by youtube) are boosted to the top of the comment section as a default setting. But, you can change it to just boost comments from bigger channels, or disable it. KZbin did that change because they thought that "youtubers" write the most important comments. Yep, youtube is broken to us. But to them, everything is perfect - it's a money making machine, after all :P

Pimp Squirtle but are you subbed to Buzzfeed is the question...I watch jack too but when you are subbed to someone his videos do not usually appear in the main page section because you can already see them in your sub box so youtube OBVIOUSLY considers that a waste...matpat is talking about the sub box...I only watch all the channels of BuzzFeed for a month and it all started with a video of theirs and since then their videos kept on appearing on my main page until I watched like 100 and decided to sub...that is because BF is a really big ''network'' thingy and project or whatever it's called and youtube knows that so it's in yt's interest to recommend you their videos...once they see you are interested in ONE bf video they just keep sending until you subscribe :))

well thats what i'm doing and thats the reason why i dont get this whole subs are broken thing.... ive seen every video my subs posted pop up in my sublist even if i didnt watch any of them in a long time. the hot/start page was full of crap since always and sometimes showed me channels i subscribed just because and all shown videos in the preview were older than a month the thing you tube changed is that i believe to remember that you were once able to set your subscription feed as your main page so that it is the first you see when you open youtube

I think another big reason this is happening is just over saturation. Remember youtube 3-4 years ago? There was just not that much stuff. For example, in the EDU/STEM scene of youtube, where our channel belongs - a few years ago there were only a few "big" channels you had to watch: minutephysics, cgpgrey, crash course, scishow, veritasium, Vsauce. That was not that much and for example crash course and scishow had a much smaller output than today. Nowadays there are SO many "new" channels in that field that produce great videos. Like the brainscoop, itsoktobesmart, an army of PBS channels, Scishow space, healthcare triage and loads of small channels (like for example "thisplace") that do really interesting things. I remember the time when I watched every new video with edu/science content, of all the good channels in this field on youtube. Nowadays it is impossible to keep up and there are channels I watch only a video or two a month or less, although I love them and never am disappointed. It is not likely that this will get better in the future. Big channels with millions of monthly views and millions of subscribers still will do ok. It is easier to get deals and the adds still pay not super bad on that level. But it forces medium sized channels to look for other ways of funding or they just can’t really exist. Like the PBS Channels. They NEVER could exist without their funding from a larger entity. The views just don’t cut it, not even close. This is not totally a bad thing, you have to get creative. We do work for hire on the side and manage ok. But, like the video said, one chance in algorithm could smash our views and force us to abandon youtube and our channel. Which would be horrible. So yeah. Hopefully that doesn’t happen.

Dang, this is really well done. All this subbox/analytics/upload frequency stuff is stuff I think about a lot but then at the end of the day I usually end up ignoring it. And that's my fatal flaw when it comes to KZbin as a career. I just can't get my brain to switch over into view optimization mode. I got into video making as a way to do whatever I want creatively. Once I introduce rules and making stuff I HAVE to make at a certainly frequency I just end up having less fun. I want to meander and just do what I do. I realize this is an impossible if I want to continue rise in the KZbin world. But I'm doing fine for now and I'm happy. I guess that's the dream. Maybe I'll get my act together one of these days.

Matt. You're a genius. You've literally gotten the maximum possible likes with the minimal effort possible. You've subconsciously *ordered* us to like the video. This entire video is a huge likebait and viewbait for the entire channel. Considering how much you talk about subliminal messages and how they're everywhere, it's a bit queer how you've employed them so well here. At 2:27 you set into out minds that liking and subscribing is an option (showing the word, talking about it). Now, of course, little to nobody is going to do this on command. It's not that easy. However, this reminds us about a like button even existing, placing the image in out subconscious, (some of us even did it at that point that would rather have not, with forgetting about it in the first place), and might make some people think "Well, i like the video so far, might as well do it after". This sets up the possibility of a like at the end, and a sure like afterwards for most people, simply because you drill it in so hard later on. 2:59 - You show a liked "like' button, while also showing that viewing the video helps the creator live their life. I guarantee you, if the subliminal "Like to keep me alive" hasn't come across someone's mind, I'll eat my hat. This plays to our morality. "Well, liking this video will help Matt create more! And will let me see more, as a result. Also, it'll keep him alive and happy with minimal effort on my part! Why not?" Around 8:10, you show the like count on another video. Because many people either like your channel more than they like that other one, they'll want your video to have more likes because they believe (for whatever reasoning) that they want you to be superior, via more likes to show dominance. It's a territorial thing we have embedded in our minds, and your channel is the figurative "turf" (weird, huh?) This is possibly the most effective use of your method. 6:29 - 6:39 - "If you click on every game theory video, it'll show up in your feed, bonus points if you like and comment" This is possibly the most dastardly thing you could do. No sublimity, pure words. That sentence coerces us into "Liking" any one of your videos, to be able to see more of your work. Now, as most people don't want to go to some random video that they have every possibility to hate and want to get over liking ASAP, they'll like this one for convenience. This could supply an indefinite number of likes, based on whoever could stumble on your videos and want to see more of you. That sentence alone guaranteed you an unnamed number of likes. This is wrong how at every single moment that you could, you put into our heads that we should like your videos. How do I know it's worked and that I'm simply not just over-thinking this? Well, what's the most trending game right now? Simple! Five Nights at Freddy's. Now, it's very, very successful sequel earned a GT, much like it's predecessor. How many views does it have? It's very popular, so it should have, at the very least, 3,000,000. Right? 5,582,478 Views Now, with that many likes, it should have loads of likes! It's a very popular and active topic! 146,479 Likes What? Only 146,479? That's insane! The like count on this video must be a substansial lot less, considering it only has 2,123,676 views, right? Wrong. This video has 204,471 likes at the time of post. Now, how is it that a very, very posted topic of video that has over 5,000,00 views has less likes than a lesser topic that only has around 2,000,000 views? You said KZbin could flip a switch and become the bad guy, right? With how powerful it is, and all. Couldn't you simply flip a switch, as well, and place subliminal hints in your videos? You're a very smart person, from what this video says. (Also, the two most-likely-to-be-clicked annotation colors are both certain shades/hues/intensities/etc of Red and Green.)

Great video, spot on. More content creators need to see this. Also the point you made towards the end about being at the mercy is very concerning, they can make a change to a line of code and ruin a channel that benefits from it, scary as stuff. Back in 2012 i saw no change to my views or that of ones i watched, i do believe the channels that got hurt where click bait and reply girl spamming types, as those of us with an actual audience had viewer retention. I wish he'd make a video about how the views are random and weird. I've seen KZbin channels where 1 video has 100,000+ views, but all the rest only have 100 views at the most. What's even stranger, is that the most popular video isn't any different from the other videos. It's the same type of content. Which means that one video got a Buch of KZbin traffic for some reason. Why is that?

TrueUnderDawgGaming The views show who's clicked on it, not who's sat through a specific time frame. I'll use Mark's FNAF4 videos as an example a little later. But the weird view count is just because subscribers will accidentally click on a video or be interested in one video but not the next. This is what I mean, with Mark's FNAF4 series, the first video got 5mill views.That's because it's new and interesting and something most people will want to check out at least once, they'll share it with friends and whatnot. But the second video only has 3 mill, which means 2 mill people didn't care enough about the series continuing. And now his latest video in the series only has 1.5mill views. So all of it is based off of something being new and resounding through the masses greatly. And there's also comment chains. The more times you come back to a video to reply or comment something new, that does count as a new view; so that could also explain the large jumps in views.

This is why I don't even bother with the homepage. I just go to my channel and look at the subscriptions section on the left. It's a bit glitchy but it mostly keeps me up to date on ALL of my subscriptions. even if it's been a while it updates me on all new videos for each one. But on another note No. No youtube is not doing a good job. They've been breaking their site for a while now and are only alive because so many content creators and viewers are already here. There simply is no other site like youtube that is as big. So both creators looking for viewers and viewers looking for content come here. Not because this site is great but because this is where everyone is. So until Google makes youtube completely unusable people will keep coming here simply because they honestly have very little choice.

Probably more than a Theory, getting in to pure facts! It would be nice if, when you click subscribe and say "i like this channel, i want to see more videos from them".... you would actually see the videos. Instead, KZbin (and other sites) are trying to let a computer guess what you want to see, which is just bad news. For one thing, what if the channel does one huge, amazing video a month like CorridorDigital? They get punished for taking extra time to make some pure quality stuff? What if you had to go to space for a month, and missed a video from your favorite channel? Doesn't seem right that KZbin's algorithm should assume that you don't want to see their videos any more. As a creator, it's very difficult. They punish you for trying to have a variety channel. They punish you for having a LOT of videos. They punish you for having "only" one amazing video a month. In order to meet these ridiculous criteria just to have your videos sent to your own subscribers, you have to 2nd guess or compromise your entire creative process. What's worse is that it's all a secret, and great minds like MatPat have to do a lot of work and come up with theories about it. Most creators have no idea, it's all a guessing game. The same great KZbin creators that, from their own homes and webcams, helped build the whole site in the first place. Just let us subscribe to a channel, and show us what we said we wanted to see. If it's a LOT of content, perhaps give some simple filtering tools to the user. And there must other ways to push Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen Degeneres that are not at the expense of real KZbinrs who are truly dedicated to their audience and making it exclusively on this platform. Eh, we could talk for days about it. Keep up the great work, MatPat. You rock!

Okay, there are a few things wrong with your comment. It doesn't matter how good your algorithm is, you can't control what people say. Computers don't know how to tell when people are self advertising, trolling, or posting dumb jokes. They can make flags to alert employees to determine if it is spam to remove the comment, but that is what the spam button is for. To solve the spam bot links, just go to your settings and filter out any website links so you don't see them. Things like this will happen everywhere, if you want it to stop, you will have to make KZbin a paid service so people can't just make free accounts and not worry about being banned. If you don't like the comments, don't read them.

Why is it so hard to understand that when I go to the subscribed box or the subscribe page I want to see the complete feed of everything I subscribe to? THAT'S WHY I SUBSCRIBED TO THEM. And yes I have a few dead channels that don't really post anymore but if they do post a video I DAMN HELL want to see it. If a channel isn't working for me I will unsubscribe myself, thank you. You mentioned two weeks, and you mentioned the idea of having several types of episodes, so that your main episodes that take 100 hours (and you have what, a 5 person team? That's about 30 hours for the bottleneck person, yes? no?) has some shorter episodes on different topic to keep a wide viewership around. Can you please go into some more details on this, so we can have a better idea on what to do ourselves. 2. You mentioned that the left side of the screen is stronger. Can you clarify what I should be putting on my left side versus my right side? (My channel is primarily Minecraft videos, ranging from map playthroughs, to Lets Plays [nb: What are tips for getting more ideas/suggestions/comments from watchers, my series seemed more like "I'm playing" than "Lets play together"], to tutorials and spotlights.) 3. I'm going to start paying attention to the color you use on your annotations. For some reason, that never really seemed a big deal to me (I used whatever color stands out on the background at the time). 4. What suggestions can you give to smaller channels trying to grow -- how do you get that initial break into visibility, if visibility is dominated by people who had visibility in the past? Number 4 there is kinda the critical one. No matter what else you do, if you never get that initial crack into being seen, you never get the cascade of growth.

With respect to uploading often enough, I think there must also be something to be said for rewatchability and dedication/type of audience, because, as he mocks himself for a lot, danisnotonfire doesn't upload regularly at all, and he's often gone a month between videos, but he still sits high on the KZbin chain so to speak. He does make appearances on AmazingPhil's channel often, and together they do have a joint gaming channel (plus they each have a side channel and there's DanAndPhilCrafts which receives an upload a year), and those are probably a contributing factor, along with their extra live shows, stage shows, books, etc. But one thing I do notice is that when he does upload, there is a huge rush of excitement in the Phandom (including myself) to watch the video, often over and over again. My totally uneducated guess would be that it is the tendency of all these highly dedicated phans who go back and repeatedly rewatch his videos between uploads that has kept it going.

the real issue with showing all subscribed videos is that some people are subscribed to a lot of creators who pump out a lot of content If I was getting every video all of the people I was subscribing to was making, My subscriber's feed whatchamacallit would only have content from the last ~20mins. I am subscribed to over 300 channels That would kinda be an issue. Though, the Favorite channel thing could work But it would probably have the same issue with the subscribe thing.

There's a posibility that it has never happened too. There hasn't been any definite proof, only hearsay. In this very video, MatPat assumes you should follow new uploads from the homepage, but that's not where you have all subscriber uploads. Go to the subscription list instead: kzbin.infosubscriptions Sure, people complain that videos are missing there too. But we still have no defininte proof of it being true. - I've compared that list to the video list on channels I'm subscribed to, and I can't seem to find videos to be missing.

There's another thing I don't understand. I have a feeling KZbin has a glitch that unsubs people from certain channels randomly. This has happened twice now; I've gone to watch a video from a KZbinr I've been subbed to for AGES, only to find I'm no longer subbed. There's no discernable reason for this, and I just have to sub again; but can you imagine that happening without you noticing? I KNOW I've never accidentally unsubbed, the channel's not dead or removed, no one else ever uses my account... it's just weird. To answer the question, KZbin IS actually my main source of entertainment. I don't really WATCH tv anymore, and I only watch movies when they're damn good. A lot of people I know are joking that KZbin's the new tv. I use it to get news on current events not just in my country, but all over the world. I use it to pass the time when I'm doing other things, to catch up with the many KZbinrs that I really like as PEOPLE. I even use it to listen to music. It's a very multi-use website. I don't really have the problem of missing videos, aside from the one I mentioned, because I go check on each of my subs every time I'm online just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I don't know if that has ever happened to me because I don't remember everyone I sub to, but the KZbin mobile app is a complete dick. I subbed to a lot of people and when I scroll through the people I sub, on the app it just cuts off at "S", meaning any channel that starts with "t" and after (including the game theorists, what an ass) won't show up. expect this also applies to your sub box too..... I've had it happen to myself a few times where videos didn't show up and ended up checking their channel to find a video that wasn't listed.

At first I thought he was saying not all videos would show up in the list for "My Subscriptions". As long as this stuff doesn't affect the my subscriptions then I don't see the problem. The home page is such a random listing of stuff from the one off videos I watch .

This doesn't explain why, even though NerdCubed, Emma Blackery, and Game Theory are the channels I watch lots of videos from every day, it doesn't always notify me when they make a new video, but it ALMOST ALWAYS notifies me when channels like Ihascupquake and Stampylongnose post a new video, even though I rarely watch them...

He did kinda touch on that at the end. I'm guessing cupquake and longnose have advertisements at the beginning and or end of their videos, perhaps even in the middle. So yeah, they make slightly more money buy just gaining that plus one click from you, even if it is rare :P

Dear Game Theorists (I'm new on watching this channel, so I haven't caught your name, please don't mind), At first, excuse me in advance for my eventual writing mistakes (English isn't my native language #Belgium^^). I must confess, I've never been keen on subscribing to channels, until lately as I've realized that subs have grown more important to youtubers than simple views (or maybe I got it wrong??). Anyway, of course this viewer shift may seem a real problem that could end up to youtubers losing their viewer pool, yet I think it won't go that way that easy. For instance: I don't look at the videos KZbin proposes me when I go on it. I usually type my favorite channels (for instance: The Game Theoriste :) ) in the search bar and go actively look for the contents I want to see. It's quite easy: type the name of the channel you want to see. Click on the channel name on the first video you see and you get on the page of the channel. Then, click on "videos" or "playlists" and you have all the youtuber's videos at hand! If you want to see the last contents, well... I've noticed it's the LIFO (Last In, First Out) system, so it's quite easy, as the latest content is shown on top of the list. I guess that by acting that way, whatever algorythm youtube may ever use, it won't work. I mean, if youtube viewers started from now on doing active video research, the videos proposed by youtube on the opening page won't have any effect on them anymore. Furthermore, active video research may end up in discovering new interesting channels. It was doing this that I ended up watching your channel daily, after all! All this being said (ehr... written, never mind), I understand your (and all youtubers' concern), but there's still hope, as long as viewers shift from passive to active youtube browsing. I don't know if you'll ever get to read this comment, but if there's a suggestion I could make: Maybe you could make a video about how to browse actively on youtube and why this is important? Honestly, I don't think that anyone of the youtube viewers would be happy if KZbin ended up being a new host for television and if you make them aware of how to avoid this phenomenon, they will do so. I might not be a psychology specialists and not have a clue about ratings and statistics, but I'm a viewer and I know what I like and dislike on youtube. And so are all of us, I guess. Anyway: thanks for all those nice and utterly interesting videos you give us!

I'm going to subscribe and like worthwhile things more often, seems like the least I could do for 'real' talent out there! I'd say this certainly is a game changer. On a political level doesn't it also mean a channel should retain some level of consensus? Afterall - if you say anything divisive won't that split your audience views. Or, does it increase them based on people who feel outrage, and those that actually agree, both viewing and sharing? How tight is the bubble we shape for ourselves accidental..? Thanks for the information. I understand that after a certain amount of times a subscriber doesn't watch a video uploaded by a channel, that it will no longer be in that subscriber's feed. Does anyone know what this number is though? 3, 5, 10 missed videos? It kind of makes me wonder what the point of the subscribe button even is at this point, and the notification button as well.

If you used to comment, like, and fav every Smosh video, then they're more likely to appear. If you don't interact with Game Theory videos at all, then you won't see them in your feed. My feed just seems to like randomly resetting every now and again though... It just randomly goes into ABC order and such.
