Super metroid is my favorite game of all time. I remember being a little kid and I couldnt beat kraid so I had to ask my dad to do it then I died in norfair without saving and had to ask him to do it again. Quite the moment of pride for me when he called me last year and asked me to come over because he was stuck on kraid in metroid dread lmao

I have fond memories of being a real young kid and watching one of my brothers play this game. (Yes, I'm outing myself here as being super old, lol). Paul would usually indulge me whenever we got to rent something from the video store and I'd ask him to get this game. Mother Brain left an impression n on me where I never forgot her name even though I couldn't remember the game title. About fourteen years would pass before I decided to go on YT and search for this fight and boy howdy did her roar scare me a bit. I don't think I was too scared of her as kid. Fun fact is that Phantoon and Crocomire have the roar of Titanosaurus, a Toho kaiju and the baby Metroid's cry was Mothra's. So I have some hefty nostalgia tied to this game.

The Super Nintendo was my true gateway to being a gamer. I did own an NES but between my age and a lot of the games being too hard for either my reflexes or brain to wrap around (I only either beat Mega Man 2 and Wacky Races on my original NES, and it wasn't un til years later I'd beat more NES games on ports of the games or emulation). The SNES on the other hand, between the vibrant colors and graphics, the smoother, refined controls as well as most developers having truly started to create games that weren't ultra hard ports of arcade games meant to suck your quarters dry, and refine that further. It truly was a gateway era for many of us, add all the amazing games and new genres that opened up, I really do believe the 16-bit generation machines cemented video games would not fade away. I think the only reason the SNES didn't outsell the NES was due to having actual true competition from Sega with the Genesis/Mega Drive, as well as the attempted competition from Atari with the Jaguar, and the 3DO muddying the waters a bit; but mainly Sega's true success machine. Super Metroid is certainly one of the greatest games ever made, but I needn't say much on that, as your video highlights that entirely. I just love to gush on the SNES, and as always your videos bring a smile to my face my dude.

I agree on why the SNES didn't outsell the NES. By the early 90s we had a ton of console options outside Nintendo and Sega that didn't make it past that generation, weird ones like the Jaguar and 3DO.

Interesting theory, that Kraid is a mutated reptilicus from bryyo. I hadn't considered it before, but it's not like we know anything about Kraid's species either way, at least not yet. I wouldn't mind that as a prime to main link.

He heavily resembles the statues on their planet Bryyo so it makes sense. It's be interesting if he was some kind of deity they worshipped too but there's no in game lore supporting that.

I see a lot of comments mentioning the animals, as well as you replying saying something along the lines of "you didn't see them die", and I wanted to point out that you actually get a slightly different ending if you save them. On the screen where Zebes explodes, if you saved them, a small light will shoot off to the right from the planet to the end of the screen. If you don't save them, the light doesn't show up, meaning they couldn't get to their secret spacecraft and die in the explosion.

The torizo has always puzzled me. Its supposedly a robot which makes sense since it can keep moving without a head but something is off, the thing looks rather fleshy to me and at the end we see one that had its energy drained by the baby and it crumbles to dust like a living organism.

Chozo machinery always has some organic components like Samus' suit does. In Fusion there's a Chozo statue being mimicked by X so it makes sense they're also organic.

It's one of the few things Nintendo has gone out of their way to confirm. The Space Pirate ship was in a totally different area. And the Wrecked Ship is much older.

The Mother Brain ghost idea never made sense to me since Mother Brain was still alive and well inside Zebes when you fight it. I'm glad the Other M concept art fledged out the creature a bit more to make it more of an alien species. Especially since you fight an enormous one in Other M.

Opposite actually. The original theory was that it was the Space Pirate ship and Nintendo shot that down. Plus, the Space Pirate ship was in a different region. And the Other M concept art mentions that Phantoon traveled alongside the Chozo on the ship.

I'd always thought it was the research crew ship. In the original Metroid's manual it states that a researesearch team had discovered the metroids and was taking them back to the federation for study when they were attacked by space pirates. I'd always imagined they got shot down on Zebes and this was their ship.

Well now we know that SR-388 is very far from where Zebes would be so it wouldn't make sense now. But to be fair, in the original manual they didn't have the story fleshed out at all, considering that it was the very first game in the series.

Real life story: when Super Metroid was made there was no cybernetic Ridley so Nintendo didn't even think about it. In game story: it's always been implied Ridley can slowly heal over time. So it's safe to assume the cybernetic implants were temporary until he regrew his skin fully.

I also like the idea that Mother Brain didn’t care about conquering the Galaxy or restoring the space Pirates to their former glory, she just wanted to kill Samus. That she saw herself as the superior successor to the Chozo and was so humiliated that Samus bested her that she hedged all her bets to try and insure she died this time even if Mother Brain had to die too. Shows that despite being a logical being she’s just as arrogant and emotional as the “inferior” lifeforms as she despises. I like how you Incorporated Ridley’s fear of Samus from the comics into this game. The comics were before he got characterized as being ruthless and Samus’s archenemy but having it be the result of all the times she’s beaten him and seeing her while out the other three obstacles with ease finally making him realize that she can actually kill him for real this time was a wonderful reversal of how HE used to be her boogie man. 😂 that’s sweet karmatic Justice.

The Zero Mission manga really gave a good insight into Mother Brain's motivations. She was fixated on Samus while Samus was growing up and seemed to express jealousy when the Chozo spoke about the Metroids. Although she's an AI, it always seemed like Mother Brain was intent on becoming the dominant force in the galaxy. She never cared about the Space Pirates or their goals. And Ridley being afraid of Samus makes so much more sense if you incorporate all the battles they had before. This Ridley didn't have his cybernetics or Phazon enhancements to fall back on. He was purely organic, just like in Zero Mission when a much less experienced Samus bested him.

Well I think super metroid is really good game granted I am not consider it one of the best games of all time is not my S tier rank but I don't think the rank of middle A tier is bad and being in my opinion the fourth best metroid only behind fusion, dread and prime 3 isn't a bad placement like, I said on the metroid 2 vid for me at least the latest 2D metroid is better than the one before it but I won't lie this game is one of the most imporved sequels of all time with the like of sonic 2, street fighter 2, metal gear solid, DMC3 and smash bros melee to name a few and it's influence on metroidvania really show from symphony of the knight to hollow knight. While I found it a bit overrated not as much as melee or GTA5 per say I think is aged greatly the story is great, the gameplay is good but I think if was a bit of story or cutscenes it could benefit the game better kinda like how a link in the past did like maybe samus talk with herself and we know more about the character as a whole but overall I might try to 100% once I finish my 100 with BOTW and kirby and the forgotten land

did... did you just say kraid is a bryyonian? i mean bonus points for creativity but thats a theory at best with nothing for proof besides the fact that bryyonians were bigger then your average human not even the bryyonians having three eyes can be considered as proof because not every bryyo statue has three eyes and thats not to mention the fact that the bryyonians were extinct well before the federation (and thus pirates) got there and they werent spacefaring yet so the pirates couldnt of just found one in space

Otherwise, we know absolutely nothing of Kraid's backstory besides "big green monster thing." And the Reptilicus species weren't totally extinct. You fight plenty of the warrior class types in Corruption. The Science Lord class was extinct.

Super is great but the controls feel a bit outdated compared to the GBA games and AM2R. When I get Super Metroid Zero Mission rom hack to work this might get a higher place for me. Now, Fusion is my favorite with the best OST of the series and bosses. Also the map is way better in it than Super, marking the items you already have collected. That should be standard in every metroidvania.

I'm familiar with the specific quote from IGA you're referring to. He said Zelda was the initial inspiration for the idea behind SOTN. He's also been quoted saying that the "Metroidvania" label fits quote well in retrospect and he's honored by it. In any case, the detail in this video explains how the term Metroidvania emerged. Multiple people worked on Castlevania and injected their own ideas into the gameplay specifics, it wasn't solely IGA. Saying Super Metroid had absolutely no influence on the future of the series is complete non-sense.
