Im a biochemist and 13 year EMT. These sensors were NOT common cheap thrrowaway equipment like they are now. It's genuinely astonishing nintendo made this for a game. Those chips are almost certainly proper ones from a real pulse oximeter. Also these things were BULKY back then. This is an amazingly miniaturized one for 98

Nah you don’t need the complexity of a pulse ox to detect heart rate, you need several LEDs of specific wavelengths with a processing unit to do the math for a normal pulse ox For this you could totally get away with the one (just need to spot diastole/systole cycling not specific values)

I think "normal" is that the game gets more difficult as your heartrate increases, while "reverse" gets more difficult if your heartrate is low. Putting the default as "reverse" would make a lot of sense as the other would just be a positive feedback loop where you get stressed from the increase difficulty until you either lose or suffer cardiac arrest. Also considering this is JDM I kinda expect the english translation to not make much sense.

I've built a fair share of arcade cabinets, barcades, and tabletop cabinets in the past, but seeing that pump it up machine makes me want to build a full cabinet for the arcade dance pad controllers I made years ago. I'm a rhythm game addict, but for some reason I've only built a keyboard mania arcade inspired table-top cabinet...time to do a late summer project and build a complete stepmania machine... it'll be easier now with my full machine shop and workshops compared to when I was a teenager building them out of a small shed.

Ayyyyy, Pump It Up mentioned! Nice SD cab as well! You should swap out for a Prime Marquee! I know they're harder to get for the SD cabs, being solid and all versus the flexible inserts of later marquee boxes, but I think I know a few folks with Prime SD Marquees if you ever want one!

They ought to incorporate this tech for VR, a little hanging clip that runs from the headset to the earlobe could be cool. I know you can buy external dedicated heart rate gear for gaming but to have it be part of a standard kit would influence a lot of development.

Sadly it was missing the amp box and MK3 when I got it. I would have liked to run Zero on it for a while because that’s where I started to take piu seriously. I did play this cab when it was OBG back when it was in public in the Adelaide CBD but it was terrible compared to DDR at that time. (MAX2/Extreme)

Wow! I haven't seen those early electrolytics in a long time! I found a stash at our work a few years back of them and asked the owners about them. They said they were entirely more consistent for their early pick and place machines to place. They said they didn't stick around too long as the machines improved fairly quickly.

in the 1990s my parents had an exercise bike in the house, and it had a heart rate monitor that clipped to your ear. The pulse in the ear is really easy to measure clearly, so it makes a lot of sense, especially if your sensors aren't that sensitive.

To open boxes like that I usually use a steel ruler, fairly easy to slide one the whole length and out the other side in most cases. Then just pull the whole thing outward and gently upward at once.

I remember this one, it was one of the Tetris games with PuyoPuyo block sliding rules and the prediction placement and none of us liked it. We also had 4 heartbeat monitors and the changes made by the monitor were negligible to say the least.
