I'm kinda disappointed you guys didn't mention the Yakuza series. That's been pretty much my favorite thing Sega has done recently, and the games are really fun and unique. Kinda like an RPG with action game combat and stories that are like Japanese Godfather. Also, Sega actually did put out an updated version of Virtua Fighter 5 fairly recently, so it's not like that have left it behind or anything.

TrevHead10 Well, if you're new to fighting games or 3D fighting games, I would definitely not recommend Virtua Fighter. They're good, but the learning curve is basically a vertical wall. They're tough to wrap your head around. That said though, if you're just new to the Virtua Fighter series and do have fighting game experience, definitely go for the Final Showdown version.

DemomanX614 If you've got a decent PC, then yes. It's a lovely 60fps at 1080p+ I've got a couple of 60fps vids of it on my channel. Sonic Generations is a funny one. Whilst I wasn't a particular fan of Sonic Colours, I can't really agree with Joe about Generations. It can -seem- like it's just a ride, but to really master the levels, you need some hefty memorisation and (almost) pixel perfect timing, which is actually a lot like the old games if you wanted to get through levels quickly. The summary of the sub-missions is also a bit harsh, since they are usually massively different from the standard levels. That's not to say they are all good, I just wouldn't call them all that lazy or a cheap way to extend gameplay. I did get a chuckle about Joe's description of the homing attack though. Thing about that is, in most previous Modern Sonic games, it was pretty damn unreliable. Something you always _hoped_ would work, but in the back of your mind, you knew at any moment an attack might not home at all leading in an insta-death, lol! It's still not 100% in Generations, but pretty close.

The "classic" Sonic in Generations is what I wanted Sega to do for years. But, sure enough, they managed to botch it. Enemies are so scarce that there's no challenge whatsoever. You're doing little more than staring at the screen watching Sonic going from one point to another. But thanks to that game, I stopped waiting for the perfect modern Sonic game. It won't happen and it doesn't have to. The 16-bit titles are all that we need.

aer0soul Keep in mind, these guys have to work with the collections that they have, or items that they have occasionally borrowed, as in the case of the more rare consoles they have reviewed. They have done clear over 100 episodes, and they differ from other retro channels that tend to focus on one game per episode while Game Sack tends to average around 10 games per show. There is going to be overlap, especially with Sega considering Joe is a self-proclaimed Sega Fanboy, and Dave was at one time going for a complete genesis game collection so he has a ton of games. They are pretty good with giving us a lot of variety, far better than like 90% of the other channels i come across.

WHY DIDN'T YOU USE THE BOOST BUTTON IN MODERN SONIC STAGES!!! That is like not using flud in Super Mario Sunshine or the gadget weapons in Ratchet and Clank. If you don't use a mechanic that the game was build around (like jumping in Mario, using the sword in Zelda, or restoring your health in Pokemon centers in Pokemon) then odds are your going to think the game is crappy.

I love my Sega Dreamcast. It was my first Sega console I purchased. While I was sad that Sega killed the Dreamcast, I have no regrets. As for Sega now, I don't know what is going in their mind but they have alot of other neglected games that need to have a sequel or a remake. I also believe that a Shenmue today will probably succeed now since there are games that are now similar to Shenmue. While I like Sonic, I don't like it as much as I do with their other forgotten titles. Happy Belated Valentines Day!

I enjoyed the vid, but there's a hell of a lot of actual in-house stuff you missed out: Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gun Valkyrie, Jet Set Radio Future, Shinobi (PS2), Yakuza, Binary Domain, Virtua Fighter 4, Virtua Tennis 3 onwards. Those Platinum games aren't exactly Sega games, are they? Also, I decree that Virtua Fighter 5 is, objectively, the best 3D fighter out there.

Honestly most of the new one's aren't really that bad. Sonic Unleashed was mostly fun, had sort of a muppet feel to it, which I enjoyed for the retro comedic side of it. The gameplay was good, nice combat and fun boss fights. My only issue with it was the "hub world", to much padding and searching for the next mission. The only prerequisite for a player getting to the next mission in a Sonic style game should be beating the previous mission and that should go for Mario style games as well. None of this collect enough stars or Rings bullshit.

I'm not usually a big racing fan, but for my money, the version of Sega Rally on the 360 is one of the most underrated games from the previous generation. It was just incredibly fun to play. Even the Wife got hooked, and she usually only plays retro style platformers. Was it lacking in modes? Yeah. Could it have done with more courses and cars? Sure. Did I play it with a huge smile on my face regardless of these shortcomings? You better believe it.

Really cool episode, but I did not like the bashing of VF5. It has to be the most refined 3D fighting game out and is one of the few SEGA franchises still exclusively being worked on by an in-house development team (the legendary AM2). Even though we don't have a VF6, SEGA hardly left the series hanging as VF5 has steadily been receiving updated editions. Also: the simple 3 button control scheme has not stopped the series from gaining immense depth since VF2.

This episode was most certainly an interesting one to say the least. It kinda felt surreal to see you guys cover a lot of modern games in a single episode. I have to agree with what Joe said about people buying Sonic games because SEGA just keeps making them. Although if you aren't a big SEGA fan you won't be hearing much about anything else that isn't Sonic. For example I didn't know about most of the games in this list and had no idea just how many games House of the Dead had. Also I was hoping to see you guys talk about the Super Monkey Ball game on the Vita to see if it is worthwhile. My biggest grippe with this episode was that you guys didn't cover much of the stuff SEGA did for the GC, PS2 and Xbox. Other than that you guys picked a really good topic and it is fun to see Dave get some revenge.

I don't like those unnecessarily long boss battles either, especially when the bosses can regenerate health or heal themselves. But what I really hate are normal enemies with tons of HP, because they serve no other purpose than hindering your progress, and making "level grinding" (when applicable) even more of a chore. A prime example of this is the last phase in Ar Tonelico - with random encounters and massive-HP enemies, I just ran from almost every battle simply because it's not worth the time...

Sakura Wars V: So Long My Love is one of my favorite games that I've played in the past 4 years. I loved it so much on the PS2 that I bought the wii version for cheap. It's like a mech anime as a game. You have the Story segments that play like a visual novel and the combat segments feel like the awesome battles in a mech anime, that play a whole lot like the Valkyria Chronicles games Jet Set Radio Future was one of my favorite games to play as kid and replaying it brought back a lot of memories and even trivia I didn't know of. Like that BS 2000 has their music in the game. I like the Hatsune Miku games on the PSP, PS3, and Vita. The music is cathy and the game is colorful. The game is a fun music rhythm game since you want to watch the background animations but the prompts to press the buttons are always on the move. Not so much made or published by Sega but the crossover games Projext X Zone and Project X Zone 2 were really fun and had great fanservice for the fans of the companies represented in the game. The games are repetitive and long so don't try to finish the game in one go or you'll be burnt out quick.The games don't even feature Sonic so if you want a game that recognizes that Sega isn't just Sonic, then the game might be for you.

Seriously... Sonic Colors and Generations are not that static. *You* are the one who kept repeating actions and just going from point A to point B. There's quite some exploration in both games, you can try to speed up as much as you are able to (which is what Sonic games are for... you know... the name... the Genesis games...), and if you get to enjoy it, do some other activities like missions (I love many of the Generations ones). Unleashed-styled games are not just FMV-like games. It just so happens that you tried to do what the game told you. You didn't even try to boost or skid, as it was shown on the footage!

What, no mention of the Yakuza series? Possibly one of their best post-Dreamcast series of games, and the closest we'll probably get to another Shenmue (though, I actually like Yakuza better than Shenmue.) Aside from that, another great episode.
@GameSack
@GameSack 9 жыл бұрын
I always avoided that series mainly because people keep comparing it to Shenmue (which they really shouldn't). It's like "Here... play this. It's not Shenmue but it's the next best thing!" I don't want the next best thing, I want Shenmue! As a game it should be sold on its own merits. I'd probably really enjoy it if not for the constant comparisons.

Game Sack It's not really thaaat much like Shenmue. The comparison is really just on the pure amount random stuff you can do like play Pachinko and Mahjong and get massages and do karaoke. The main game is about fighting and is kind of like a really good 3d brawler. It's also got a lovably insane story.
@lhadatt

Game Sack I'm going to suggest that you try the series, but I won't say that it's a substitute for Shenmue. It's got some of Shenmue's DNA, but they're rather different. It's more a different take on the concept than it is a replacement for its predecessor. I ignored Yakuza for years and I didn't realize that I was missing out on some fun games until recently. I tried Yakuza 1, and immediately sought out the others since they're becoming rare. Also -- there is an Outrun stage for SASR Transformed. It's unlockable, and it's pretty great. There's even an DLC kart on PC with Ryo driving a transformable arcade cabinet -- it's an Outrun cabinet on land, Super Hang-On on water, and Space Harrier in the air. Sumo are pretty clearly fans of Outrun.

Game Sack Realistically, Shenmue is gone and it will not return. It has now legendary status, but never sold well in its time. So if MS doesn't buy the IP or throws containers of money at Sega to boost XBONE sales with Shenmue 3, it will not reincarnate. You shouldn't get yourself get strapped from experiencing a great series, just because of other people's comparisons. Give it a try. Do i sound like a fanboy ? Oops ... well maybe i am for this series.

kameoosama I feel that one of the selling points of the series is its epic story line combined with an rather open world that has a strong japanese flavor. I feel that the beat em up gameplay alone would only make a rather dull game. But throw in the awesome story, the atmosphere, the missions and side-mission and all the other stuff and it becomes this awesome experience. Calling it a Brawler imho doesn't do it justice. I would rather compare the series to GTA than Shenmue. All 3 just have in common, that they are open world games.

Nothing makes a cold, snowy, hurricane-force windy day better than a new Game Sack episode. SEGA after going third-party has definitely been a mixed experience, with ups (the Yakuza series, SEGA All-Stars Racing, Virtua Tennis 3, OutRun 2006, and Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution) and downs (Virtua Quest, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Boom, the Super Monkey Ball games for the Wii). I do think that SEGA was consistently better during the Dreamcast era and back, but those days are gone, sadly. SEGA is undergoing some serious reorganization, and with more focus on mobile and PC games... the chances of a new SEGA console are infinitesimal. I'd sure love to see a repeat of the first year of the Dreamcast's lifespan... but I'd also love to inherit a billion dollars. Another great episode, guys!

Sega has a very arcade philosophy to them. So that's why a lot of their games can seem like grand and polished spectacle rides. But there is often a lot of depth under the surface as you guys connected with in outrun and all stars racing. think vanquishes boss battles are there to vary up the gameplay, breaking down the forms of the huge adapting mechs instead of just killing a regular enemy with a big health bar.

You think the aiming on Wii lightgun games is off? Did you try calibrating it in the game's options? I haven't been able to play any Dreamcast lightgun games, but I remember having to calibrate a Guncon 2 for my PS2 to play Time Crisis 3, and it worked fine afterwards. Another thing I notice is that some people who just use the wiimote for lightgun games without a zapper or other peripheral is that some tend to slightly tilt their hand upwards when they pull the B button, throwing off their aim a bit. A small theory I have as to why you feel the need for a reticule on Wii lightgun games is that, well, you're used to having a reticule pointer for Wii games. I mean, the Wii menus and several games have pointers in them, so when you're asked to play a point-n-shoot game that all of a sudden defaults to no pointers, you can't immediately mentally adjust for the lack of what you used to have. It's kinda strange that you say the PS3 Move feels more accurate, since I've heard people say (at least for Dead Space Extraction) that the Wii version feels more accurate because it has a wider calibration range, or something.
@GameSack
@GameSack 9 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, definitely calibrated. Made sure the Wii knew where my sensor bar was as well. Actually these were played on the Wii U. I tried the Wii itself recently and for whatever reason the aiming seems more accurate. I don't really know why that would be the case.
@ShogunGin0
@ShogunGin0 9 жыл бұрын
Game Sack I personally don't recommend playing Wii games on the Wii U. From personal experience, even setting the console output to 720p, regardless whether you use component or hdmi for the Wii U, I see some nasty artifacts, especially in some in-game graphics cutscenes. The opening cutscene in Skyward Sword when you start a new file looks terrible, with numerous vertical strips of black grain that was never there when playing on a Wii. This doesn't happen with all games, but the only improvement I see in playing Wii discs on the Wii U is slightly more accurate colors. Other times, I just see the jagged edges in sharper resolution, which I'd rather not have. And with you saying that your lightgun games seemed off with the Wii U, even after calibration, whilst I never had issue with lightgun games on the Wii, well that makes me not really want to play Wii games on the Wii U. I personally play my Wii games off a hard drive connected to my softmodded Wii, which I do recommend. With the right USB loader, you slightly decrease load times, take pressure off the Wii's laser (only a problem with dual layer discs), and it bizarrely seems to improve the resolution. My friend and I tested it on Xenoblade Chronicles, and we both saw improvement, to our surprise.

I disagree with a few of your opinions concerning Sonic Generations. 1) The game does require some skill in the latter levels. But personally, I actually like playing Sonic games to enjoy the ride. 2) There is a 60fps version available, but you chose not to play that version and simply believed all versions were 30fps. It has some of the best music in the series that is remastered rather than remixed which is awesome, but in some cases they did remix it where it was most welcomed. It is my favorite current Sonic game and is the only one I enjoyed out of any other one due to its awesome appraisal to the old games. But, they should have had more levels which is that game's biggest flaw. But, all the other modern Sonic games are just a load of ass. Sonic Colors had that cool song that was great until the buildup ended. I thought the co-op was cool in that one at first, but realized that in Sonic games it is worthless and the only real fun you can have in a Sonic game with two friends is competitive play since it is two different screens. I guess you could do co-op that way, but really how is your pal helping you play? Just feels like a competitive race with story. I wish Sonic Generations had a competitive mode, but for whatever reason they did not. Would have been awesome if at least the PC version had it since it could have handled it. The console versions were just struggling so hard to keep a mere 30fps alone into the game. After switching over from the console version to the PC version, I was blown away at how much faster it was in not only gameplay, but loading times.
@GameSack
@GameSack 9 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree on the music. It's generally pretty good. As far as the 60fps PC version goes, that's great to hear but we're console gamers. We're the true Master Race. Don't make us start a race war!
@Medachod
@Medachod 9 жыл бұрын
Well all I was trying to say is to not zone out PC versions of a game if they have certain aspects of a game you thought were non-existent. I am a console gamer too! I just play all of my past consoles on the PC instead to save money! Oh and it has a great love for backwards compatibility. If I buy one computer, I can play it all! Even the old-school consoles. But, I do have a soft spot for my SEGA Saturn since it is impossible to emulate it on my computer and is the only console I was willing to purchase just because of how interesting and fun its games were.

Joe, I love Game Sack, but I have to really disagree with your opinions on Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors. The modern gameplay in Sonic Generations actually adds value over the classic gameplay. There's more you can do to control your character - move left, right, jump, boost, zip between left, right, and center lanes, grinding, hooming attack, speed up or slow down while falling in some sections, 2D sections and 3D sections. If just playing through the regular levels isn't fun for you, try the time attacks. Time attacks aren't for everyone, but it is really fun with modern Sonic in this game. Classic Sonic is still good too, but the physics are just different enough from the Genesis games to feel inaccurate and it lacks the same kind of depth for time attacks. Generations has some of the best level design in the series for both modern and classic. And the game would have been too short without those "padding" missions, some of which are really fun takes on these classic level themes. The real issue with Sonic Generations is it doesn't go all in on the Sonic fandom. Why not make the source levels half from the Genesis Sonic games and half from posr-Genesis Sonic games? Why are there so many city themed levels? Why isn't the story as fleshed out as Colors? The thing I really disagree with is what was said about Sonic Colors. There was no mention of wisps and how they change the gameplay or make you want to go back and explore earlier levels. There was no mention of how they differentiate the game and no mention of bosses or how the under water sections are different from previous Sonic games or the high level of polish the game has. I wonder what Dave thinks about these games.

I'm surprised there isn't a flood of nintendo fanboys raging in the comments. I kinda share Dave's opinion, specially because I hate the rubber-banding in Mario Kart games, making your skills play no part in winning, just the RNG of getting the best items when you're falling behind. Items in S&S A-S Racing are more balanced in my opinion, and you can recover easily from them, and making the 1st to 8th place bullshit from Mario Kart games less possible, specially if you know how to play.

That Sonic Gameplay is missing the boost, since Generations and Colors are mostly based on completing the stage as fast as possible. I just don't understand how Joe is such a SEGA FANBOY yet constantly bashes Sonic... hell I believe he doesn't even care for the classic Sonic games from the 16 bit era... yet he enjoys long and dull turn based RPG's where each battle lasts half hour?... it's head scratching to say the least, from saying Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast is 1 of the worst 3D platform games of all time (?!) to complaining that Sonics name is in Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing... I can never tell if he is actually trolling or not with his Sonic hate

Just to let everyone know, I will only stop liking the Sonic series if the characters were portrayed as humans instead of anthropomorphic animals, the latter of which I tend to prefer. :P

Honestly this can be said about xbox with halo tbh. Without it there's hardly anything out there that stands out for the xbox lineup (especially in terms of exclusive games like for the xbox one)

+Christopher Richmond - Funny. Seems like everyone is wasteful nowadays. What's next? "Let's smash a couple Apple II's, nobody likes those, right?"

+TeDiouS1001 This is why we need to be allowed to publicly shame people. So wasteful to see classic games destroyed. Thumbs down.

5:24 "Honestly, I don't know why Sega keeps pushing Sonic so hard." You and me both, buddy. Sega has a lot of great properties (Shinobi, Phantasy Star, Crazy Taxi, Vector Man, Jet Set Radio, Guardian Heroes, & Kid Chameleon) but keeps ignoring them while only developing games about the Hedgehog. I wish Sega would get its act together and be as great as it once was.

***** Shenmue 3 is on it's way (hopefullly) since it passed it's kickstarter. I wish we'd get a re-release of all the Panzer Dragoon games but sadly Sega lost the source code for all the games. I never played Otogi. Is it any good?

I'd love to watch a themed episode about games that are nostalgic to you guys.... games from your childhood (or later in life) that made an impact on you, on whichever system that is... like the "guilty pleasure" episode you guys did, but themed on games you remember playing before becoming collectors
