2 additional points to consider in your calculation. Chell is sort of in the slipstream of Wheatly, so as he is a sphere, she might actually be pulled towards him thanks to Mr. Magnus and his effects which could partially explain how Chell has such monstrous grip strength in these insanely high wind speeds. Your pressure difference assumed that the room is at sea level. Depending on where the shack is when she is ejected in the end of the game she could be a few miles under that level... increasing the pressure and hence also increasing the face ripping airspeeds significantly.

Steve Hills “The old game theory was better!” you say. Geez, everyone nowadays is thinking that. I understand that you enjoyed the old ones better. So did I. But it’s an unrealistic standard to expect that the sequels will stand up to the originals. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, Jurassic Park, Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, Superhero franchises, Doctor Who, Back to the Future, TV shows, and even KZbinrs. This list goes on. Nearly everyone could agree that in one of these categories, the original was better. But expecting that the new stuff will satisfy you just as much, is unfair and unrealistic. The new stuff can still be good, but nostalgia will make you like the original more nearly every time. I understand where you’re coming from. I’ve been watching this channel from the beginning, but every time a new FNAF video appears in my recommended, I think, “Aww $H!T, here we go again.” I’m tired of them. But to complain about how the old stuff was better all the time is just annoying at this point because it’s a poor way to think about things you could easily enjoy. Now I’m not saying you have to like it, you’re obviously entitled to your opinion, I’m not denying that. I’m just saying don’t let nostalgia destroy your ability to enjoy new content. I do feel where you’re coming from, but I just think you need to at least consider what I’m saying. But again, you’re entitled to your opinion so you can completely disregard my words if you like. the Mach 1.2 air speeds are pushing Wheatley too... so it doesn't matter. With physics, it is all about relative speeds. Relative to the sun, we are orbiting at 67,000 mph... so a coffee cup in your hand is moving at 67,000 mph! Yet you still hold it.

@@TrueApexMusic The issue above was "doesn't let go", which I'm assuming refers to letting go of Wheatley. Relative to her, Wheatley is moving the exact same speed, so there is no reason to "let go". I was thinking there may be some other factors restricting the flow of air since aside from the hole in the ceiling they are inside a fairly solid building in a room that can probably become air tight under normal conditions. Even more so than that is the size of the portal which further restricts the amount of air that can flow at once. The question is whether those restrictions are enough to throw Mat's number off.

@@kingacrisius There is a limit to the amount of air that can physically move through a space of a given size (we control the pressure coming out of a high pressure source like a tank by restricting the physical size of the gap through which the air flows). @@JiMMy-xd8nu Ugh. I hate that testing strategy. It creates needless stress on students and produces a bunch of wasted time spent grading to wherever a student randomly got. It's far better to just randomize the question order a few times and shuffle the printed tests so students can't predict if the people around them have the same questions they do. You then just put a mark on the paper somewhere to indicate which random version it is so you can still grade it quickly. People have been using this strategy since computers used punch cards. You can even have it randomly give a set number of questions out of a larger pool of questions so any 2 people aren't likely to have the same questions at all (most standardized tests do this in batch form so you can't know the questions year over year). At this point, you could set it up with pre-printed student names at the top of the page, put in your student's name and have the computer show you exactly what answers that student should have given (or what key points you are expecting to see if it's essay form).

The restrictive “throat” created but the diameter of the portal would limit the maximum velocity of material ejected. This doesn’t take that into account at all. You’re effectively Turing the earth into a Rocket engine and the portal would be the nozzle. It’s flat oval shape would not be very efficient at moving the exhaust stream. Unless I’m wrong...
@supersmily58114 жыл бұрын
I don't think you're wrong, but it doesn't really matter for the conclusion he draws. If what you say is true, it would increase Chell's chance of surviving, and Matt concluded that she had a significant chance of surviving already.

So what might have happened was that the portal blowing the air out would turn the moon into the rocket away from the earth. Probably not enough speed or long enough to push it all the way out of orbit, but enough to ruin the moon's orbital pattern. Edit: This was mostly a joke and just a little bit of theory crafting. I have an actual question though, it won't make much of a difference with how long the portal was open, but if the portal stayed open long enough, would the air pressure on the moon equal the earth's new pressure or would all the air escape into space from the speed it has from getting out of the portal? Would it travel back to earth somehow?

Ooh! Aerospace Engineering student here! I can contribute! I did the math! One part that was left out which plays a HUGE roll in the forces she experiences is the DENSITY of the air hitting her. Your math is correct if she were in some test tube like NACA, or in earth's atmosphere, but she ISN'T on Earth, she's on the moon! Sure she's bombarded by 1atm pressure difference (technically even more since she's deep underground), but when you have a huge pressure gradient like this you also have a huge change in the density of the air. I did the math (it was actually a lot of fun!), and it turns out that the density of the airflow on the moon in her situation would be about 33% that of the air density on Earth. This would mean that the forces she is getting hit by is approximately 1/3 that of the cited experiments. So instead of feeling like she's being hit by a whopping 910 mph wind, due to the density of the airflow dropping so much, it would feel like she was being hit by about 303 mph winds, which ends up being much more manageable, and even below those extreme test situations.

"..and I guarantee it's not what you're thinking." I was thinking that the portal is basically pushing the atmosphere of Earth out through said portal due to the imbalance of pressures thus creating the wind, sound, and breathable air but the problem that "changes the ending" is that the imbalance would be so great that it would create a massive gust of air and cause a significant amount of damage to the surrounding infrastructure and planet Earth as a whole possible killing millions including Chell. Now to watch the rest and see how close I was... Edit: Okay I've watched it and I was honestly surprised I got it as close as I did, I did overplay my hand though because I went with the "changes the ending" line a bit too much and assumed something about my assumption was wrong.

Wouldn't the gravity of Earth be enough to contain the air through the portal as the pressure gradient isn't enough to deprive us of an atmosphere usually?
@fortuna194 жыл бұрын
Such a vacuum exposure wouldn’t result in “significant damage to surrounding infrastructure and planet Earth...”. It’s interesting to see things being crushed by the atmosphere when a vacuum is applied to their interior but that won’t be the case here. The entire atmosphere on earth pushes air through that one opening. It won’t cause massive pressure gradients around the planet, because assuming that lab has some sort of passageway for air to circulate, the effort of pushing that air would be spread out over the entire planet. Needlessly to say not much will happen, maybe a gust of wind inside the lab but virtually no noticeable effects beyond that.
