Final Fantasy VII's cross dressing scene is one of the most memorable in gaming. But as I was analyzing it, I noticed a disturbing trend in how LGBT lifestyle is portrayed not just in this scene, but across gaming as a whole. So what does FFVII's drag scene teach us about the cross dressing community and about the gaming industry as a whole?

I thought we were all God's children. And I was under the impression that he loved all his children. According to most Christians, he loves all his children except for homosexuals and people who don't believe in him. I though God was all about love, peace, forgiveness, acceptance, and equality, but according to most Christians, it's about shunning those who aren't the same as everyone else. Not to say that all Christians are like that, just a large amount.
@Chadmh358
@Chadmh358 10 жыл бұрын
Its kinda complicated. You see God loves everybody according to christian doctrine. It is stated in the bible that homosexuality is a sin. This does not mean homosexuals will not enter heaven. No sin is worse than another sin. I sin all the time. A gay person and me are equal in terms of sin towards god. The issue comes in that people dont acknowledge homosexuality as a sin. I have multiple homosexual friends and i have no doubt that they have a chance to enter heaven. Its all about faith in god and atoning for sins. Christians who look down on homosexuals are misguided and ignorant. In fact they lack the true beliefs of the bible. I dont know i that helps at all, but its my opinion. And i agree that some christians are wrong...

***** no not exactly here is what i think and what i believe in: If you have committed a sin and you die no matter who you are a murderer a theif whoever you can still explain yourself to god and if you truly are a hell spawn u go to the underworld if you cant be fixed. I think god loves everyone and everything and Christianity isn't really complicated. You can to a degree chose what to believe in. All god want of you is to believe in him, know hes there for you and to try your best to stay out of trouble. Christianity is really one of the most open and none complicated regions there is. If you believe in god he will believe in you. And and not trying to tell you your wrong im just stating what i believe in.

I'm a straight, heterosexual man and I was kinda hurt that Vivian was "censored" from being acknowledged as a guy. It made me feel like Nintendo didn't think I could "handle" knowing that. I get they did that for the broader population and all, but still it didn't sit right with me. Not even for some social-justice bullshit - I just don't like that I couldn't play the game how it was originally intended. It was about 2 years after the game had been out that I finally learned that little fact.

Shelton Dunlap That's simply not true. Gender, as opposed to biological sex, is that thing that encompasses cultural notions of male and female - women wear dresses, men wear ties, girls play with dolls, boys play with trucks, etc. All that is cultural, not biological. So a trans person is someone who is biologically one sex, in this example male, meaning that they have lots of testosterone and probably a penis and facial hair and so forth, but who takes on the cultural role of a woman, in terms of e.g. how they dress. Gender is a matter of presentation and cultural identity, and is (essentially) a matter of choice (although in practice, most people don't so much "choose" as "feel" what gender they should be). So if you're born biologically male, you're not necessarily going to be a boy/man for the rest of your life. Furthermore, chromosomes don't necessarily match up with biological sex, and not everyone is unambiguously biologically male or female. Many people are born with some kind of intersex condition, and are more-or-less arbitrarily assigned a gender at birth, occasionally with genital-mutilating surgery to "fix" them. And so it should not come as a surprise that these people grow up to be dissatisfied with their gender role. In any case, to deny them the title of "woman" or "man" because of their biology is bigoted and shows a startling lack of empathy. You're arbitrarily imposing rules upon someone else for no good reason, rules like wears dress = has vagina, which have no factual basis, but are cultural. So don't try and claim that your "chromosomes are what matters" opinion is in any way more valid than the idea that biological males can wear dresses.
@tubblestop414
@tubblestop414 9 жыл бұрын
DontMockMySmock Of course everyone is born with qualities of male and female but their chromosomes determine sex overall. Im not talking about gender roles im talking about chromosomes and science.science. Im talking about sex not gender,major difference.
@DontMockMySmock
@DontMockMySmock 9 жыл бұрын
Shelton, did you read my comment at all? You were talking about being a "man" and how that is determined biologically, which, as I went to great pains to point out, is false. Being a "man" or "woman" is cultural, and your claim that they are determined by biology is wrong. I don't know why you now say you're not talking about gender roles, when in your first comment you clearly and unambiguously talk about gender roles and adamantly refuse to separate them from biological sex. And as I also pointed out, chromosomes don't necessarily determine biological sex, either. Biological sex isn't that simple.

1) there was a comment here, and a misclick from me reported it (sorry, I'm on a phone typing this) 2) the comment was (paraphrasing, I don't remember the exact words) "A girl wears trousers and no one bats an eye, but a guy wears a dress and everyone starts freaking out" 3) My reply is simple: in the general society of this decade deems pants/trousers as a piece of clothing appropriate for either gender, while deeming dresses as "girls-only", similar to tuxedos being "guys-only". This is me saying what society thinks. I won't confirm or deny that I agree with this; my opinion is presently irrelevant.

Female characters are allowed to be homosexual because most men find lesbian couples "sexy" and "hot". I find that sexist. Let lesbians be lesbians without society finding such couples as sexy. Two girls in love is not sexy. It's love! Let them love each other with being viewed a sexy or hot couple. Heterosexual couples are cute but not sexy or hot.

@PuttysauceYT

+Hazza Slack Gaming Its sexist because the only way an LGBT+ relationship can be accepted is if it is two lesbians. Because lesbians are "Hot" and "Sexy". Its sexist because some hetero men will only accept LGBT+, if its a pair of sexy lesbians that they can jack off to. Its sexist because it is demeaning to lesbians, cause they are only seen as a sexualized object. I can guarantee you that if lesbian weren't sexualized by Some hetero men, they wouldn't be in some games. Now I agree with you, it is cute. But game developers are not putting lesbians in there games because its cute. They put them into there games because it is sexually appealing to some hetero men. To sum it up: It is sexist, very, and needs to be stopped because it is wrong. That's why it is sexist.

Honestly, the way Fallout: New Vegas handled sexuality was one of the best. Arcade Gannon and Veronica Santangelo were both gay characters, and it had a small impact on their backstories, but it wasn't some kind of ridiculous, over-the-top stereotype. You were meant to feel sorry for the NCR soldier at the outpost who talks about the NCR's homophobia, and the same with Veronica and the Brotherhood. Normal characters you met in the game were gay and it was no big deal, and bigotry was always portrayed in a bad light.

And that's normal, because they want to be represented in their favorite fictional works too, and in the right way. The bullying isn't normal though, that part needs work. But if the companies were considerate enough they would at least put background gay characters who are innocent bystanders and not villains or the laughingstock of the fictional NPC communities. I'd understand if there weren't any lgbt characters, although I wouldn't agree because I'm an ally and I want my lgbt peers and friends to be represented, but putting gay people in specific villainous roles is pure misrepresentation, and indecent in general. If you can't do it right, don't do it at all, because real people get hurt because of it.

I'll give you a hand, but I have noticed that many of the main characters are male, and if they are female and the main protagonist they are really stereotypical so how about a female for the main protagonist, or someone transgender. It would help break the trend of male protagonists in best selling games.

@nerdaitami7205
@nerdaitami7205 9 жыл бұрын
***** so let me clarify things... I meant video games where you play as a female character during the whole game (and you don't get to choose) wich is the case of some rare games... (tomb raider series, Drakengard 3, Portal, Mirror's Edge) but if we compare to the oposite we get a lot of games like Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, Shadow of Mordor, Hitman, Metal Gear, Persona, Deus Ex, Battlefield, Gears of War, Stalker etc... and also most games don't have any reason to not include a female character because most are set in Fantasy or Science Fiction settings and those that are not that I listed could have included female character's because nowadays include woman's. and then there are games like hitman... is there any reason an assassin couldn't be a woman? even during the antiquity there was female assassin's and the only thing the job require's is brains and luck... also setting is not an excuse, women always existed and will alway's exist (as long as the specie's exist) so game's like Stalker wich I'm actualy playing without a single female character makes the game less believable. also the history we are told in class is actually not acurate, it is an interpretation and is biaised. we have proof that there whas female knights in europe, that woman where quite common amongstd viking berserkers and there whas female Samurai's in japan but the history we are told deliberately ignores them. sorry if this is quite long and not very well constructed but I hope you got my point...

tbh, at this rate, i don't think we'll reach equality. Our folk keep demanding representation for nothing and we have so many disagreements on lots of things. I dream of a world where being gay is seen as common to most of the population on earth. But we keep putting labels on ourselves and focusing on non-important things and that's why we're not progressing to a better future, imo.

@Sapheiorus
@Sapheiorus 9 жыл бұрын
***** I am an atheist myself, having broken through my Christian upbringing a number of years ago for reasons unrelated to this issue, but my remark was not intended to be aggressive against the religion. I may not necessarily disagree with your statements, but I see people in these comments using their religion as a context to both speak for and against tolerance of homosexuality. History may look back at this point as one of many in which Christian doctrine and accepted belief changed significantly. Who believes in witches anymore? Who believes it is acceptable to burn alive those we believe are such? How many Christians still believe in a predetermined fate of Heaven or Hell as opposed to one where such a fate is not set in stone from the moment you are born? History classes tell of times like these that are long past and of an event that best describes how malleable religion really is: The Reformation. From the Protestant movement, great schisms forever changed what Christianity was for many people, and I'd like to think that these progressive times may bend the masses under Christianity towards toleration. You see it in the comment spaces and you hear it by the words and silence of the Pope on issues such as these. The point of my comment was to probe whether or not people thought the sheer number of Christians in the world make that faith more or less a deciding cultural factor in issues related to this matter, because, while we are increasing in number, we seculars are not yet as numerous as they are... and also because this is a clear point of contention WITHIN their faith communities. Within the frame of the struggles of homosexuals, I see Christianity's role as a critical aspect of human civilization's path to bringing about proper treatment and accommodation for homosexuals as members of society. So I ask you, what do you believe is gonna affect this civil rights movement for homosexuals?

I'm a huge proponent of separating yourself from the church for this very reason. People have grown far too dependent on the bull shit that the church feeds them. I constantly had that nonsense stuffed down my throat as a child, but now that I'm out on my own I've learned how misguided Christians have become. I don't necessarily make my faith a major priority in my life, in fact I very rarely use it for anything other than getting me through tough times. I don't go to church, I use common sense, logic, and morals not taken from the church in my debates. I just wish there was more I could do to put my voice out there saying there are those who believe in God who aren't out to make LGBT members' lives hell. We truly believe that they are on the right path and that our God loves and cares about them, but that does not necessarily mean He is THEIR God. I promise some of us actually have brains, LOL.

After reading an hours worth of comment reading, I'm pretty pissed off at humanity. But on the bright side, most people were with me: People should be free to love and live as they please. I feel strongly about gay rights, not because I'm gay (I'm not -or... at least I'm 99% certain I'm not), but because I don't believe in telling people what they can and can't do. And because freedom and liberty are VERY high on my national agenda. I can't be friends with racists, because it's not okay to tell people they were born wrong, just because they're different.

That would only work if they said they would only have relations with someone in their family which would make it a sexual preference.

bannockk it is the same thing. Gay sexual relations or marriage are no different from Incest sexual relations or marriage. Both are being heavily condemned by the majority of the world and are considered illegal. The scenario itself is no different, example: a brother and a sister might "fall in love" and wish to live like a normal couple. Or how about a little paradox? How about gay incest couple, that one takes the cake. As I've mentioned before if you support one, then you automatically support the other cases, or else you sound like a hypocrite.

I watched the 'kids react to gay marriage legalization' from the fine brothers and their answers really got me thinking. The next few generations are going to be growing up in a world where pointless boundaries that we were raised with are completely removed. People always say things like 'Oh, this next generation is the worst', but I'm thoroughly excited to see how things will be in 20-30 years.

Even tho this is an old episode, one thing I'd like to point out is that the gaming industry has been known to be sexist for reasons that is unknown. It really makes me steaming when gaming is treated as a MAN thing when gaming should be for EVERYONE. Games portray the good guys to always be a straight man because the industry believes that is the truth to Gamers. There has been a big improvement, but there are many changes that will one day be valued.

Here's how it is gaming is for everyone. There are different video games you can play you don't have to play Mortal Kombat (this is just an example) which obviously appeals to a straight male, but you can get games like Life is Strange, Until Dawn, The Walking Dead, etc. which don't only appeal to men. Yes anyone can get the game obviously however, if me as a businesswomen knows that mostly males buy games and they don't want to see two guys kissing on each other, but instead two females then imma get this money and sale them what they want. And to be fair times really have changed and opinions on gays have shifted, the games in the video are old, and females did used to not want play video games before the times changed.

What is also sexist is how every woman in some games is like the strongest of bosses , and how the feminist agenda crosed over to the game industry , games aren`t sexist only at women , but also at men , there are a bunch of games , where men are stupid and women are smart for no reason than their gender , there are games, where the core idea is to brutally murder your ex , because he broke up with you , and no , KZbin , I don`t want more of those ads . Please just stop giving me ads for games , where I am supposed to fight some men , because "they are the bad guys" , because they broke up with the character I am supposed to be , I hate when that happens. I also hate when there is this idea , that men are dumber and slower as stats , when in reality , the smartest and the fastest of the world people are mostly , if not even fully taken by males . And for the last time , I don`t want to vote for bloomberg . The point I am trying to make is that vedio games are trying to get feminists happy by making sexist against men games , then complain about how they aren`t seen as equal to everyone , plus , gaming is not to be for someone , but for everyone , you can`t compensate for being sexist with more sexism

@@Otome_chan311 Considering that at this point, MatPat's terminology was most likely coming from RuPaul though, I'd say that was simply a lack of education and not a lapse in humanity. So many games since this video have portrayed LGBTQ+ characters in a much more positive light, (even going so far as to include gay CONSTRUCTION WORKERS in some cases), and it would not surprise me if some of that started when creators like MatPat began calling the gaming industry out on it. I DO NOT agree with Mat misgendering the characters. All I'm saying is that he was legitimately trying to do a service to the LGBTQ+ community, and that he most likely just didn't know how pronouns work at the time he filmed it.

There's something that some people in these comments seem to not understand; it's not that LGBT characters are being portrayed as villains, nut jobs, and/or inhuman that's the issue, it's that the majority of LGBT characters are portrayed as this. Heterosexual characters have been portrayed in the same light as LGBT characters, but they've also been equally seen as normal upstanding members of society and glorious superhuman heroes. And when there is LGBT characters, it's heavily sexualized and/or stereotyped. But as a bisexual transwoman, I can say that it seems to be getting better as of late. Games like Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, Fable, Fallout, Sims, Saints Row 4, etc., etc. all have bisexual features allowing you to date/bang anyone of your preferred sex. However there's some issues that do need addressing. The biggest one is writing a story with LGBT characters seems to be a challenge for most story driven games, most writers basically place a "I'M GAY" neon sign on top of the gay characters' heads. They still tend to lean towards LGBT tropes, stereotypes, and sexualization to make their point that they're gay, bi, or transgender. Luckily some games, like Skyrim, make them act like normal people in their respective world, but those characters are optional love interests and not part of the main story. The Last of Us did it right though and should be a shining example of how to portray a gay character. And while we're on the subject of hashtags and LGBT in this video. Nintendo, I want gay relationships in my Tomodachi Life! #Miiquality

I'm so glad you mentioned The Last of Us in that! I was thinking about how well that game portrayed Bill without a big 'I'm gay!' sign above his head. Bill was seen as a strong, independent and very capable character and any mental issues he may have had were quite heavily shown to be due to his isolation in the town. Ellie is another example. The 'Left Behind' DLC showed the gay kiss between Ellie and Riley, which did not become a huge part of the game, but really added to the story. In interviews with the writer, it was confirmed that Ellie is in fact gay, something which I found fantastic since she herself is portrayed in an amazing light throughout the main game and DLC. She's a bad-ass with integrity to boot. The Last of Us really did do it right, and from everything I've witnessed so far from Naughty Dog, they really can do no wrong. My favourite developer!

Isabelle from Animal Crossing: New Leaf is actually bisexual. She's attracted to the mayor regardless of their gender! AND, she CLEARLY wasn't a villain, a very, VERY, nice person and kind and harmless would be how I would describe her. ALSO, she wasn't censored in America's release! Even though she isn't drag or acts too seriously upon her bisexual feelings, she still IS bisexual, and this was CONFIRMED BY NINTENDO OF AMERICA. AND Isabelle hasn't been labeled as anything but positive things in later additions to the series, and since her groundbreaking debut in New Leaf, has been in EVERY GAME, and STILL remains bisexual. So maybe she's a sign of hope for all. And now with games like Journey, that have characters who are gender-neutral, there's now hope for a better tomorrow. So, my point is, please like this comment MatPat, hehe

Well, that's alright. I guess I got used to her crazy/rude shenanigans. In the game, I managed to become friends with all my companions. I know that some companions won't get along well with others. But that's alright though. You just have to find a way to deal with them and their unique way of seeing things and still have everyone on your side. However, even though I did become friends with her, I'm still not so keen about Vivienne.
@livale8337
@livale8337 7 жыл бұрын
Jazzy Wood In the case of Sera and Vivienne they're like those people who are intensely hellbent in believing misinformation. Sera sees one blood mage and decides that all mages must be evil terrorists. And Vivienne is under the impression that the Circle in infallibly in both comfort and knowledge, not acknowledging that good Spirits are capable of existing, and assuming that the standard of living for mages is the same as in Orlais (In which the circle practically get 5 star hotel rooms to house their mages) I wouldn't be so against them if you could help them understand that what they believe is based entirely on misinformation, but you can't. Even Fenris changes his mind slightly and his judgement of mages is lifted, if you follow the right course. And he has good reason for his beliefs, not just rampant misinformation. Sorry I get really passionate about this topic. As much as I love the Dragon Age series I feel like the writers just haven't been doing a good job as of late in certain aspects.

As a Trans person I just want to say thank you matpat for making an objective, clear cut video about how misrepresented he LGBTQ community is in video games. I hesitated watching this video even though it came up in my suggested quite frequently, mostly because I felt the question matpat posed at the end 'are game companies just giving us the storylines the heterosexual male gamers are comfortable playing?' Was a truth that I'd faced many times throughout my life while playing video games. But when I saw the video of the speech that he gave at VidCon, I felt a newfound sense of trust in him. I'd always enjoyed his videos but didn't know if he was an inclusive and open youtuber, since, many youtubers regardless of the content they make, take the easy way out and avoid "sensitive" topics altogether. Wrong, the games shown in this video as being 'anti lgbt' are old games, probably late 90's to very early 00's. We as a society are just starting to be more accepting of homosexuality, and the games industry over the past 5 years has started to reflect that. I'll give just one example of a recent game that shows LGBT in a good light: Dragon Age. Both games allow same sex relationships whether your character is male or female. There are a number of companions that engage in or hint at wanting a homosexual relationship. Bioware have done a great job in creating a game world that has very similar cultural beliefs to our world, only homosexuality is a lot more acceptable.

For one thing, there's another gay character in that game, Curtis's best friend Trevor, and he's not only a good guy but also the objective best character in the game. Also: Curtis isn't a sadist. At best he's a masochist, and a reluctant one if that. He's dating a character who IS a sadist and she introduces him to the concept. They sleep together a few times and he's always worse for the wear in the end. The sadism is mostly there to put in some dark psychological horror when space aliens mess with his mind and force him to imagine parts of his body being ripped away. ...Not really sure why S&M is being associated as a negative characteristic here at all, really. Volgin I get, he tortures people to death, but that's sociopathic sadism, not exactly the same thing as what Curtis goes through.

Spencerkin live This video does make some good points, but I think its outlook is way too negative . A lot of these examples are from AGES ago, and lumping "video games" together as a single category and proposing that they might be "Anti-Gay" is kind of goofy. Each game is made by a different team with a different mindset in different cultures. Claiming the medium could even be one thing is a pretty bold move in general.

***** Actually! While tumblr has had a big impact on helping alot of teenagers understand themselves better gender wise these other genders have existed since 1700 AD; Even Egyptians used them! Today majority of people dont know about the existence of these options for gender because of the link from sex to gender itself. Were told that being born one sex means to identify with it for the rest of our lives when thats not that case. Unfortunately youre right with one thing, not alot of people take them seriously, but even if you dont understand or follow by other genders please respect the fact other people will choose to have and keep them. Remember there are plenty of sources if you wish to question me (which is perfectly alright i can understand it might be confusing) Thanks!

***** Scientific evidence? No, science, has nothing to say about self identification. I know this, because I am, in fact, a Scientist. I work in Biology lab in fact, so I'd say I'm pretty well suited to refute you. "Science" only acknowledges that you have female parts, male parts, or both. Self Identification is a social and personal issue, and "Science", being a largely liberal study, won't ever tell anyone they are wrong to identify as whatever they please. I'm glad for you that you have no doubts or question and identify strongly with male aspect of your life. This does not stop other people from making other choices. Its not "Delusional" at all. In fact, for a transgender to try to identify with the parts they were born with would actually be the delusional choice. Also, I disagree with those calling you a fucktard or being harsh, you have every right to state your opinion as well. Just understand that it's not "psychotic behavior" or even wrong, cultures the world over celebrate more than one gender. India in particular has an interesting version of transgender were certain males are female for one day only! And they work as essentially temple prostitutes, where men pay to have sex with them and the proceeds go the temple of (name of Hindu god missing from memory, something about a god who had to become female for a period for some reason or another, any Hindu people feel free to correct any mistakes I make on this part). And heres the important part to remember, for those people, for that society, those men REALLY ARE women for that time period. So, I won't ask that you like it, or that you accept it as even ok, but I will ask that you learn to tolerate others, because it will help YOU as a person in your future, and society as whole.

Wait what? In Persona 4 the questionably "gay" guy is later fleshed out to actually just enjoying female hobbies and hated girls for making fun of him about it. And the Girl who cross dresses later has character development to where she is fine being a girl. This doesn't change her attire, but fashion doesn't define gender, pronouns do. It sorta treated homosexuality and opposite gender identity as personal faults or denial or just phases, imo...how is that accepting?

WhiteZerko I mean I understand japanse people are really implicit unlike the directness of westerners, but that still doesn't mean sexuality. I always saw the shadows as basically children acting out a facade to try and draw away at what's really hurting them. Due to transgender sometimes isn't 100% black and white, there is different forms of TransGenders, there is Gender dysphoria, but there is treatment for it.. @jadebeason7552
@jadebeason7552 6 жыл бұрын
Not as common. It's very common to see two females together and have someone call it hot. People are more accepting of it because it is a common fetish for people, while often times gay men are not seen as 'hot' or 'sexy. For someone critiquing my English, you have remarkably bad grammar and spelling. I am not being hetrophobic by pointing out that lesbian are seen as hot while gay men are more commonly not. I used no buzzwords, and by pointing out something doesn't make someone hetrophobic, as just like homophobia is the seeing them as less, and in o one did I imply that. The majority of men are straight, and so while it makes sense that they see two females as hot, the majority of women do not make two gay men a fetish, you seem not to understand this.
@jadebeason7552
@jadebeason7552 6 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. First off, your spelling makes it hard to understand what you are saying. There is a problem with catering to straight men, it ignores women and anyone of a different sexuality. It sees straight men as the most important, despite the fact that they are not the majority. In fact, there are more women in the world then men, and so if it is catering to the majority, it should be catering to bisexual women, as that is actually the majority. There are more bisexual women then straight women, as multiple studies show. You really should stop calling others kiddo, since you write like you are in the second grade, and present faulty arguments.
@jadebeason7552
@jadebeason7552 6 жыл бұрын
Incorrect once more. If you criticize someone’s English you better at least spell correctly. Those sites you linked, those were debunked. You have no way of knowing whether or not any of us are children, and so calling us ‘child’ is demeaning, rude, and makes you seem like a douche. How have I been racists? I never mentioned race, or said that females or males are in anyway better then the other. You are grasping at straws, and quoting false studies, one ‘study’ ‘debunking’ ten other studies, yeah you need to do better research. You didn’t provide links until you were shown to be wrong, and your own links are incorrect. Honestly, you are just an asshole, you started by insulting everyone and calling them wrong for quoting an opinion, a common opinion as well.
