Just to add on some things! Gaster’s name, if W. D. does in fact mean Wing Dings, & Gaster is a portmanteau of G & Aster, means his name has two fonts. Papyrus & Sans are two fonts as well. Their traits are also complimentary opposites. Papyrus is outgoing, extroverted, energetic, professional, & ambitious. Sans is unbothered, introverted, lazy, casual, & unambitious. While Papyrus is looking for glory, Sans doesn’t care. Opposite traits. Papyrus is also tall & skinny, Sans is short & chubby. Papyrus wears more professional clothing, whereas Sans sports a hoodie, very casual wear. Gaster seems to possess combinations of these traits. If Mystery Man is him, then that explains a lot. Gaster is tall like Papyrus, but not skinny, he’s inbetween that of the two. Gaster influences the world around him, but indirectly, things extroverts do, influence, but with introverted methods, indirectly. He’s clearly traumatized, at least physically, similar to Sans (mentally speaking), yet he was an ambitious scientist, ambitious like Papyrus. Even their fonts line up. Papyrus & Aster are used mostly for professional settings, Papyrus was the font used to write Roman law, extremely professional. Comic Sans & Wing Dings on the other hand, are more silly, used more often for jokes, comics, & humour. All casual settings. And their outfits, again, professional & casual. Gaster (if Mystery Man), has what looks to be a comfy lab coat. Comfy? Sounds almost casual, just like a hoodie. Lab coat? A professional outfit used by scientists, professional just like Papyrus’ battle armour.

DEUS VULT, It's more like Sans is an alternative version of Ness one that followed a different chain of events, but in his (Sans) own lore and history he is a shattered half of gaster. The idea of Sans existing comes from a Ness ROM hack, but in undertale Sans the character Ness is based off of is partly gaster.

The Goner monster kid says it's not raining because if you talk to him first he says that he's afraid of a world where it's as if he never existed, that everything is normal without him, that he is useless. With Entry Number 9 it says: “things aren’t going well. none of the bodies have turned into dust, so i can’t get the SOULs. i told the families that i would give them the dust back for the funerals. people are starting to ask me what’s happening. what do I do?” Assuming this IS Sans talking and not Alphys, it would explain why Sans’ mailbox is filled with so much mail, and maybe even the crumpled paper and/or LETTERS in his room. Those letters are reminders of the part he played in the DT experiments with Alphys. Only major thing that doesn’t make sense with this, is entry 11 would have Sans saying he gets sweaty when working on finishing Mettaton’s body. It might be safer to say, the non capitalized ones are when Alphys was super flustered and anxious at certain points during the experiments.

If sans was receiving letters from families, assuming he just left them in the mailbox, why is it when you click on the mailbox it just calls it junk mail. If sans just took the families' letters to his room and click on them, it doesnt say what they are about. (I might be wrong about that I dont remember) Might just be hiding something from us or this could all be unrelated entirely

Coming in way late into the discussion: I don’t think when Gaster addresses the two, he addresses Sans and Alphys. I think it’s Asgore and Alphys. Since Gaster hadn’t fully split at that point in time, how could he address a person, who is made up of himself. Otheewise a solid argument.

I think is that sans already existed before papyrus, thats why sans is papyrus’ older brother maybe sans was created before papyrus and helped gaster with alphys and when gaster split half of his smart brain went to sans and half went to papyrus or something

Well, Sans is likely created from Gaster. When he was scattered through time and space, some of himself was probably absorbed into Sans. Papyrus, his other creation, absorbed parts of Gaster as well.

Ok yes I realise this comment is five months old but I still found it interesting, you make a good point! I think it's less that Sans was *created* by Gaster and more that him splitting apart is what made the Sans we know. Like, the timeline where Gaster died is the one Sans wants to return to, because in absorbing half of him, he got pushed into a different one, or at least something changed? That would be a cool way it could work :)
