I understand why people might've been disappointed with the ending, because of course we wanted to see him succeed. But I agree that the nature of these eldritch horror games often leaves very little for happy endings and I felt like the game earned it's ending, after all it makes it very clear that once a character hears the song they are actively losing time.
@andreasottohansen73386 ай бұрын
Personally, even with bad endings being natural to anything eldritch horror, I find it really cheap when it's the only option. Like here, none of what you did matter, people just got subjected to horror, and you'd have gotten the same outcome if the characters had done nothing. At least for the cosmic horror of something like The Sinking City, you have some agency in your unhappy endings, so it doesn't feel like none of what you did matter, because that is a terrible feeling to leave any game with.
@0Lottee06 ай бұрын
@@andreasottohansen7338 I can understand how it would feel unsatisfying, but I personally don't agree that a guaranteed bad ending is 'cheap' - I would find it far more 'cheap' if they shoved in a potential happy ending that didn't fit the established tone and parameters of the story. I rarely see people take issue with a game having only a happy ending but I think difficult, sad, or traumatic endings to a game are not somehow lesser. An unhappy ending can be the most valuable part of a games story and I don't think we should expect every game to offer us a multitude of ending options when the devs have a specific story they are trying to tell. I don't think being offered a happy ending is what makes the actions of a game meaningful; it's the development of the characters and exploration of the universe we're put in. To me, it is that characters are willing to try and willing to suffer in their efforts to make things better that makes it meaningful.

Old game or not, spoiling a game in the comments is just sort of bad form. I just started this video seconds ago, and while I will still play the game, it's like opening a brand new book, beginning the first sentence and then some random person approaches you and says "oh man, great book, too bad ______________ happens at the end though". naming her ariadne is probably a reference to the greek myth. its not a 1 to 1, but ariadne was the one who gave theseus the twine so he'd be able to navagate the labrynthe, so having her be the one to hold the music box/es(which seem to be its main way to cross over to 'our' side, and get victims) is very clever! However, she could also be seen as the antithesis of her name, as she lures people into the Presence's labrynth, and then cuts them off from the 'our' side, making them stuck with it.

Me too. It’s realistic too, for a couple who loved each other but one fell into addiction in hard times. She HAD to end the marriage even if it hurt her to do so, but now that he’s been sober for a long time, I’m sure he’s acting like the man she fell in love with, so it’s much easier to have a friendship when he has beaten his addiction and has grown as a person. Even if it is impossible romantically anymore, it makes sense that they are still close friends after all they’ve been thru together! :) I appreciated this detail of the story as someone whose ex fiancee turned to drugs and is now recovered.

I tried playing it but got bored at the second episode. Lovecraft, for me, is always about personal horror. "I might be a fish-human hybrid", "my ancestors are evil", and "My girlfriend is possessing me". Yet, for some reason, when people make these games, the characters are third parties who go to investigate another person's horror. The game also has a loop that constantly repeats itself: walk around, solve puzzles, hide, and close doors. At first, it is fun - great visuals, puzzles that make sense, the mechanics as they slowly are revealed to you (closing doors, hiding, etc.), but eventually that is all you do on repeat. The story was not interesting enough for me to continue through that loop. I think it has other issues, but that was my main reason for stopping. I just could not see myself doing this loop repeatedly for more episodes.
