I'm putting my backyard gym together right now. Instead of a squat stand, I've got a yoke. I can use it for squats, benching, OHPs and such, but...well, it's a yoke. You know how awesome those are, after all. :)
@mitchell89406 жыл бұрын
I gotta a basement gym but I'm getting a yoke for my back yard so i can get a little vitamin d and get a lift in.
@tomk34786 жыл бұрын
The vitamin D thing is another advantage, that's for sure!
@dacenmarus16186 жыл бұрын
What is this yoke you mention? I work out in my yard with bars and weights, but I don't have a rack and would love to find a way that lets me do proper squats w/o a rack.
@tomk34786 жыл бұрын
It's a strongman implement that Rogue and a couple other companies put some holes in so it can double as a squat rack. I ordered mine from Titan because I'm broke. ( www.titan.fitness/t-3-yoke.html ). Rogue's are the Y-1, Y-2, and Y-3 and are all different heights. But the upside to a yoke over a squat stand is that you can do yoke carries, loading exercises, and even pull-ups if you get one that's tall enough.
@dacenmarus16186 жыл бұрын
That's brilliant. I wasn't even thinking of THOSE kind of yokes. I'll look into that. Thanks for the links. Honestly, since we were talking about backyard gyms i at first thought (hoped) you meant that you had figured out a way to use a horse or cattle yoke for squats.

Second video I stumbled on... and a bit late to the show but I just want to say thank you for sharing man. Your positivity and creativity will take you far. Rogue and Powertec are a bit out of price range as I’m blessed with 5 kiddos and three dogs lol. But the Marcy Smith Machine with the plethora of attachments, Weider adjusble bench, fitness gear bench for three lifting stations with free weights are good to go. We also have the cable set up with the weighted elliptical, treadmill, running elliptical, hydronic rowing machine, sit up station, pull up stations, punching bag and speed bag, wife’s kickboxing standing bag. Our sandbags will be coming in either Monday or Tuesday, weather permitting... we just got a bunch of snow out here in Colorado. And she’s looking to buy us some quick adjust Dumbbells to add to the home gym. Down the line I plan to get a full blown powertec multi-station to throw in the garage. Plus we love hiking the trails out here. So I’ve recently picked up a GORUCK Rucker1.0. I’ll be picking up some plates for it aside from Rogue weight plates for my plate carrier. Eventually... I’d like to pick up the Brute Force weight Vest 2.0. Well... that’s our setup and our hopes for the future setup. 😁. Have a good one.

Cool graphics on the walls too! I've got a little garage gym and actually got rid of the squat stand. Figure if Olympic lifters don't need them I'll just lift from the floor👌. Got a keg, bands, barbells, fat bar, rings, various handles that can attach to ceiling or weight, farmer's handles and a tire filled with concrete for a p.o.s sled(😣).

Great vid Joey. Very informative. When I was building my home gym I thought I needed bumper plates which are really expensive. For a lot cheaper, I bought steel plates and built a platform and used some of the “saved” money to invest in a good quality barbell.

Because I homeschool my children, I had no choice to make a home gym. I totally agree with Craig's List being your friend. I've found most of my equipment on that. So, I have a squat rack with attachments to do pull downs and such. I bought a weight bench with weights that had 1 inch hole, then bought another bench for the weights. Now, I have a leg press machine, Titan short stack, over 400 lbs in Olympic weights, leg ext/hack squat machine, Olympic bar, bands, battle rope, rower and back extension machine. So, I'm pretty proud of my basement gym. Mom with thick thighs!!! Priceless!

I am thinking about slowly building my own barbell gym one day, because barbell training is my passion. What is the best way in going about this? The idea is a little scary because I have a really good state job as an IT professional and make around 60k a year with full pension and benefits. Weight/resistance training along with overall health and nutrition is my passion though. I would hate to throw my life away when I could be helping others achieve a better quality of life. However, I have a family that I support so I dont want to give up something secure as I already have. How many members would you need and what membership fees are required in order to make a decent living at this? I've watched Alan Thrall's video on his woes in starting a gym and that kinda scared me a little. I dont even live in a highly populated area such as Sacremento so traffic would be even more scarce. Should I just stay away from this idea all together?

Start out with a rack and a bench. Invest your money into the rack, its the foundation of your entire gym. Buy a barbell, invest money into a solid barbell, a proper bar will last you years and years if its maintained and treated well. Buy weight by the pound. Dont focus on brands or fancy bumper plates, buy cheap metal at the lowest $ per pound you can. Your weights DONT need to match. These fuckin plates will NOT lose value (as long as you dont buy those plastic pieces of shit filled with sand). If you want to eventually sell your weights and get matching, you can but dont bother to start. Build yourself a squat mat. Eventually haggle or trade your way into machines like a rower, calf raise and a cable pull.

I bought some weight recently and had the choice between some shiny smooth name brand 20kg (45lb) plates for like $70 or some crappy bumby brandless ones for like $40. Don't really know why anyone would pay that much for a lump of iron
