Hello JB: I have been Restoring, repairing and maintaining Honda lawn mowers for 10 years now. Recently, I have had two HRN216VKA mowers (from two of my neighbors). Both Honda mowers were suffering from two conditions. 1. Hard to start, it took 3 to 5 pulls to start the engine. 2. Poor idle quality after engine warm up and idle surge. I first tested the "Thermowax" assembly (which you call in your video the Auto-Choke actuator, Honda calls it "Thermowax") functionality and the auto-choke functioned fine on both mowers. Based on my years of small engine repair, hard starting and idle surge is almost always a Carburetor issue. So I fired up my Ultrasonic cleaner machine and removed the Carburetor from one of the HRN216's. Dissembled the Carb, removed the jet, emulsion tube (or main nozzle), float assembly (plus needle), removed the Phillips screw on the top of the carb. and did not remove the idle mixture set screw (really no need to do this). Placed the Carb body, Jet and emulsion tube into the Ultrasonic cleaner and out it thru 4 4-minute cleaning cycles. One note here, the jet and emulsion tube were clogged up pretty good due to Unleaded Ethanol gas the neighbors use. Anyway, assembled the Carb back up and installed back on the GCV170 and the GCV170 started easily the first pull with very little effort and the idle quality was like Music. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I hate to burst your bubble and just so you know, it's almost never a "Thermowax" assembly issue, as you call it the Auto-Choke actuator. I'm also a member of the Facebook group called "Honda Lawn Mower Fan Club" if you ever want to stop in some time.

I just got this mower and am super excited to give it a go! I did do a few passes on my dormant Bermuda with the bagger, as I would do every year around this time to scalp the bermuda just before it starts to green up. Noticed that it blows a LOT of clippings out the top of the bag where the cowl meets the bag on the top and figured I must have done something wrong when putting it together, although I don't think I did. Hoping that's just due to the dry Bermuda clippings and once it greens up it will bag better but I'm not so sure at this point. It was pretty bad. . .

I bought a Honda self-propelled mower when we bought our house in 1985. I have about 1 acre of grass and for the longest time that is all I used until I bought a ride-on. I kept the Honda for getting into places the ride-on couldn't or as a back up when the ride-on went into service (BTW, I'm on my 3rd ride-on). The Honda was made in Japan and has an aluminium deck and every year it starts on the first pull, although it does smoke a bit until it warms up. The only thing wrong with it after 38 years, with really no maintenance, is the compression is a bit low, which causes it to stall when the grass is long and wet. Unfortunately, mowers aren't made this well anymore, not even Honda's.

I'm a Honda fan for sure, but I'd have to give the wheels a two. Honda opted for just a metal bushing on the rear wheels and seemingly no bushing on the fronts, instead of the ball bearings that made their mowers smooth runners.

Prior to seeing your video, but after doing my own research, I had settled on this mower. Now that I have seen your review I will definitely pull the trigger. Not sure it has already been mentioned but the likely reason for the shorter bag length is due to the rear wheel drive system, as a longer bag may cause the front wheels to lose contact with the ground.

I just mowed with it for the first time today. It is the best lawn mower I’ve used. It is brand new though, so only time will tell how well it holds up. I had a 22” super recycler previously and a craftsman before that. It’s night and day tbh. The toro I had was also the one with 7.25is torque since it was the older model. The new one has a smaller engine and less torque. That is baffling to me because the toro frankly did feel like it slowed down a bit in thick grass. I can’t imagine how the new less powerful copes. That was actually the selling point for me, the honda has significantly more power. I also like the rear wheel drive much more than front wheel drive. The other thing is that it feels like the honda does a much better job at cutting the blade. I believe it creates more suction than the torro and also does a better job at channeling the cuttings into the bag. To be fair, I’m comparing a brand new machine to an old and beat up one. At the end of the day, the homda is just a much better engineered machine. It has more power, better suction, and rear wheel drive. Also, as far as the bag goes, I feel like I emptied out the bag just as often as with the torro. If you’re in the market right now, just get this machine it’s great.

Hey bear, I had the exact same 7.25 and got this new honda and I had the same experience with it kinda bogging down in taller grass. Can't believe this smaller, less torque is better too. How's ur honda holding up now? . Looks like u posted this about a year ago
@bear532 Жыл бұрын
@@paulpersons799 it’s holding up great! I’ve had zero problems with it. It is just a year old though. I have to be honest though and say that I did a full lawn renovation last year and haven’t really needed to use it that much because of that. I did though use it to scalp my lawn and I completely dulled up the blade from that which was obviously going to happen. Nothing a bit of sharpening won’t fix. The blade was fine too other than being dulled out, no major kinks or bends. I had no problems starting it up for the first time after winter and so far the few times I’ve used it, it’s done great. Now that my grass is thicker than it’s ever been in some areas, I haven’t noticed any slow down. I will need to mow in 2 days and I’ll pay more attention to the thick areas to be sure so I can let you know. The only criticism I have is that the wheels feel cheap. They work just fine though so I guess it’s no big deal? Overall it is my favorite lawnmower. The only way that could change is if it develops a problem prematurely.

Nice review covering all the bases. Puzzled why you linked to the 16620-Z8D-305 Thermo Wax Assembly. Parts parts manual for the HRN216 series shows a 16620-Z9L-003 part number. Interchangeable? I'd rate the engine higher as I think Honda has worked out the GCV170 kinks. I've run mine for about 2 hours, which is normal for my entire lawn, in about half hour increments, so more time will tell. Numerous engine restarts while stopping to pull and replace small utility line flags in the easement (neighbor is having gas utility line added). Much more fuel efficient compared to the 15 yr old Craftsman with B&S engine I'd used until last week. Overly tall damp grass will leave an intermittent slight trail of clippings but not nearly the huge clump trail the old Craftsman created, and unlike the Craftsman it didn't stick to the underside of the deck which I had to clean out occasionally if it was clumping. Discovered during research on the HRN216 series that engine surging and possible stalling can occur if the fuel cap breather is clogged or plugged - not allowing air into the tank as fuel is consumed. Breather is part of the rubber diaphragm in the gas cap, which can be pulled out. Small hole (~3/16") in center and foam filter plug on the cap (under) side of it to keep dust/dirt out of fuel. Poking objects through the hole can damage the foam filter - remove diaphragm to inspect/unplug it. Apparently a few diaphragms got out of the factory with no small hole in them. Easily fixed. About Honda Quality in General: I worked for nearly 20 years for a major OEM auto components manufacturer. Honda was among the myriad of customers in US, Europe and Asia. They have been among the most stringent regarding quality for decades. Honda and Toyota brought the US auto industry to its knees and drove the Big Three to take quality very seriously. Honda prides itself on building product and manufacturing quality into its designs - so that you get flawless, reliable and durable product off the end of the line without having to "inspect it in" with rejects and rework - or worse yet with warranty repair claims. As a components supplier they held our feet to the fire for perfect components. Delivering just one defective part was a Big Deal. Quality for them is holistic covering every aspect of a product. (Toyota is the same - it's a corporate culture.)

In general loved mine. BEWARE sticks!!! We have a heavy tree yard, no matter how much I rake we always miss one or two. The drive belt is not well protected for this issue and one stick hits the right way can shred the belt.. It is almost impossible to find a belt replacement, and is a huge pain in the butt to replace as the give you almost no room near the transmission. The spring for the transmission easily comes of then is impossible to put back on with out ripping out the whole rear wheel assembly.

@@pioneer7777777 Honestly I don't buy mowers often since I can do most repairs on my own. Also I have been just using the mower without the drive belt since it is going to take a long time to get in, and the review is right it is one hell of a mulcher. Since I'm not worried about frying another drive belt, I have been going though the areas of the yard with heavy leaf cover, even with the sticks and the areas look like I just laid down a few hundred bucks of mulch. I would see if there is a model with out the drive feature. At this point if Honda would have just given the mower a better guard plate between the blades and the drive belt I would say it is damn near a perfect mower. We are going to get a rider at some point, other wise I would check with the local metal shop about cutting me a better plate for the guard. Very aggravating to have to "drag" it backwards. It's been to the repair shop a number of times for this issue and never resolved. Also, after a couple years of use, the drive belt comes off semi-regularly. That problem also can't be resolved by the dealer. In fact, I'm shopping for a replacement mower mostly for that reason. If you’re cutting your lawn consistently during the heavy growth season you should only be cutting off 1/3 of the grass blade. I typically mow every 4-5 days. How long are you waiting to cut between mows and where are you located?

@@GarageGear last time it was mowed it wasn't that tall. The mower is set high off the ground. I believe it's a blade issue. The mower shop i bought it from said these are thinner blades. Made to break if something is hit instead of bending the shaft. I believe Honda used cheap blades. I felt of them and they are dull as can be. This mower had been used maybe 5 times. My old 18 yro toro mower has always cut better than this new honda. Even when mulching it never left grass behind like this honda. Only thing i can see looking at it, is the blades. You seem to want to blame me instead of the mower. I have been mowing grass since the 80's. When I tell you the mower is the problem it is.

@@Akecherfd8424 we’ll try sharpening the blade and see if that helps. Let me know
