I love shade trees, and palms do not cut it. But it would be nice to know small trees or larger that do not have invasive roots. The landscaping that comes down along the driveway is amazing.

Great video. Any way you could do a bromeliad video, including care tips. I have a ton of them but was wondering about best way to deal with rot in center of mother plant after she blooms. I water mine with misters and rinse them out every 1-2 weeks. Thanks so much!! Love your videos

Wonderful! Do phoenix palms (Pygmy, Silvester, Canary, etc.) need any special type of maintenance for pests or diseases, such as routine trunk injections?
@stylewithlivingart
@stylewithlivingart 6 ай бұрын
Great questions. Depending on the health of the tree, no. However, if they are weak from a storm or lack nutrients, then yes, I would use a dominion drench on them.

Your tropical landscapes are beautiful. How do you manage the roots of the asparagus fern? My one-time experience with them was a surprise because the strong roots spread aggressively and after 6 years were a challenge to work around.
@stylewithlivingart
@stylewithlivingart 6 ай бұрын
The foxtail is a different variety than the Asparagus they also have a good root system but nowhere near the spreader of the asparagus fern. I do not have much experience with that fern because of that. Sorry :(

I have a bathroom window that I’d like to add a 4x2x2 raised garden planter under for privacy. I thought a double Pygmy date palm tree would be nice. I am worried that may get too big up against the house. I need something tier 2 height to block the window. The edge of the bed would sit about 2’ away from the house. It gets about 3 hours of sunlight with a bay tree on the other side blocking evening sun. Do you have any suggestions?

A pygmy grows from 10-12ft tall and in a shady area can become pretty wide. Would something like a Brazilian red cloaks work, they can be maintained at whatever height and depth. They also do well in the sun requirement you mentioned.

Why do landscapers use tiny plants instead of full grown from the start?
@stylewithlivingart
@stylewithlivingart 6 ай бұрын
Well, it really depends on the client's wants and Budget for the space. Living in Florida, things grow so fast, and waiting and watching game can be part of the fun. Second, the COST on plants in the nurseries is at an all-time high, and unfortunately, it cuts into the budget heavily when even common plants are increased in size.

Unfortunately, Becky, I do not offer design services without handling the installation at this time. I have an excellent in-house landscape team, and I'm always playing catch-up with them. There just isn't enough time in my daily schedule to work on designs outside of my work schedule. Sorry.

Love this! How long does it take a Pygmy Date palm to grow to full height?
@stylewithlivingart
@stylewithlivingart 6 ай бұрын
Great question it grows approximately a foot per year if it’s in sandy soil and watered regularly then it can grow up to 2ft per year.

@@stylewithlivingart I see that Alexander palms grow slowly, too, so that’s a great combination. Would there be enough light in that island section to have cordelines or calusia?

Is is true that using rocks in planting beds, instead of mulch, increases the temperature and can stress plants more? I get tired of yearly topping off mulch beds that get weathered and washed away.
@stylewithlivingart
@stylewithlivingart 6 ай бұрын
Yes, they would need a second water source or, more often, watering to help combat the heat. Maybe at a strip of stone on the edge of the bed with a type of edging to give you that good clean look and allow your plants to grow right up to the edging strip and not worry about remulching at all. Ill see if I can find an example of that and send it in a comment later.

This landacape project was awesome. Great design and well thought out. The Sylvester Palms you planted are young, but for more mature ones, are you in favor of staining the trunk as some people.do, or just keeping a clean but natural diamond cut look? I worry the stain, especially the oranger color tint some opt for, looks artificial. Thanks.
@stylewithlivingart
@stylewithlivingart 6 ай бұрын
I think it's up to the client. I've done both in the past, but I always warn my clients if the stain will fade, and sometimes it peels a bit. In my home, I opted to clean the trunks with a little water pressure after the diamond cut and not staining.

I'm a big fan of Sylvester palms, I have 2 in my front yard . I would enjoy a video about palm care for those that are not self-cleaning. Like what time of year is best to prune, how often, and when. There's lots of conflicting info on YT about this, but I think it might have more to do with the location and grow zone than bad info.
